Tom Toles comic reprinted on web

Tom Toles' 1999 comic panel Randolph Itch, 2 a.m. became a webcomic yesterday at GoComics. These date from before Toles moved to Washington to succeed Herblock at The Post.

 GoComics describes it as:

Dreaming in black-and-white has never been so colorful. Read the latest thought-provoking work from Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist Tom Toles. Randolph Itch 2AM is an expansion from Toles' editorial artwork toward a comic series based on his mind's wanderings while battling insomnia. It's a perfect display of a high-concept imagination and a wonderfully funny and continuing storyline.

Book signing photos - Jonathan Luna

Cub reporter Robert Montgomery went to Jonathan Luna's book signing at Laughing Ogre today and reports, "I went over a bit after 12, when it started, and there was not a line. There were a couple of people after he finished with me." Since he was buying me a copy of Luna's illustrated novel Star Bright for Christmas, I asked him to take some photographs too.

Santa Clinton?

Here's a special Christmas treat for ComicsDC readers.

Anybody have any idea what this cartoon is from, and who did it? (don't click through to see the original yet)

Capital Christmas - Richard Thompson

No? How about this one?

Capital Christmas - Kevin Rechin

This?

Capital Christmas - Nick Galifianakis

Or these?

Capital Christmas - Joe Azar

Capital Christmas - Ron Coddington

Capital Christmas - Peter Steiner

Capital Christmas - Sam Ward

Capital Christmas - Mike Lane

Capital Christmas - John Kascht

They were originally grouped like this:

Capital Christmas - bag 2

Scroll down for the answer:

Give up? It's a shopping bag from Tyson's Corner mall from 1994.

 Capital Christmas bag

According to Kirstin Downey Grimsley in the Washington Post (November 1, 1994), "This year Tysons Corner Center is unveiling something specially designed for the mall. Mall spokesmen are calling it 'A Capital Christmas,' and it will offer a whimsical greeting tied to the region's role as nation's capital."Apparently that included a shopping bag with "cartoon illustrations of President Bill Clinton portraying Santa Claus." The cartoons (in this order) are by local creators Richard Thompson, Kevin Rechin, Nick Galifianakis, Joe Azar, Ron Coddington, Peter Steiner, Sam Ward, Mike Lane and John Kascht - some of whom have since moved out of the area.

Thanks to Richard Thompson for the gift of the bag and to he and Nick for identifying some of the cartoonists. Easier-to-read greyscale illustrations can be seen here.

Repost: An unemployed cartoonist needs your help

As I've noted here before, Bill won the RFK Journalism award in DC a few years ago, but that didn't help keep his newspaper job.

Bill Day Fundraising Update - $22,000 and climbing!

by Daryl Cagle

As our campaign to help unemployed cartoonist Bill Day from losing his home enters its third week, we need your help more than ever to achieve our goal of raising $35,000.

So far, we've raised over $22,000, but we're also at the point where many campaigns start to lose steam. Don't let that happen to Bill!

Click here to donate to the Bill Day fundraising drive

If you haven't donated yet, please consider doing so today. Not only would you be helping one of America's top political cartoonists continue working, you can receive some great gifts in return, such as an eBook featuring Bill's work, a signed print or even an original piece of Bill Day artwork.

If you have already contributed, consider forwarding this email to a friend or co-worker. With Christmas approaching, what better gift can someone give than helping a brilliant cartoonist in his time of need?

Thank you again for your generosity and commitment to political cartoons! The outpouring of support for Bill has been tremendous, and if we can keep this momentum going, I'm sure we'll be successful in keeping Bill drawing!
