E-Mail: warren@spxpo.com
Bethesda, Maryland; September 12, 2012 – Small Press Expo is pleased to announce an historic lineup of guests appearing at this year's show. Taking place this weekend, SPX 2012 boasts a murderer's row of talent, with an indie comix fan's dream guest list featuring—for the first time ever at a single event—Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, and Adrian Tomine.
This legendary group of creators has collectively won fifteen Ignatz Awards since the festival prize was instituted at 1997's inaugural SPX. Among the nominees for the 2012 Ignatz Awards, Los Bros Hernandez are represented in three categories (Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Story, and Outstanding Series). The 2012 Ignatz Awards will be presented Saturday at 9:30 P.M.
Limited edition posters by Chris Ware, as well as a tote bag of Daniel Clowes art designed by Alvin Buenaventura, will be available at the SPX Sales Table. There will be a special set of all of the posters, flyers, banners and program guide cover signed by the artists in an edition of 25, as well as a poster of the badges designed by Jaime Hernandez, also for sale.
In addition, appearing at this years show are such honored guests as Michael DeForge, Lille Carre, Becky Dreistadt, Dean Haspiel, and Nick Abadzis. Guests will be participating in a compelling lineup of programming taking place both Saturday and Sunday, featuring several "spotlight" sessions on individual creators, in addition to panel discussions and special presentations.
SPX is also pleased to announce that publishers NoBrow and Koyama Press will be making their first appearances at SPX 2012, joining longtime SPX participating publishers such as Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, and Oni Press in showcasing their latest and greatest books.
About SPX
Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit that brings together more than 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators, as well as a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year's guests.
As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. For more information on the CBLDF, visit their website at http://www.cbldf.org.

Richard Thompson, the Cul de Sac cartoonist, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2009 and began working with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to raise awareness of this illness. Chris Sparks organized Team Cul de Sac, which has solicited work from various graphic artists including Bill Watterson and Gary Trudeau, the proceeds of which have benefited Team Fox, the Foundation's fundraising arm.

3-D comics history from the National Archives
Here's a neat piece that Ken Quattro found in the National Archives - it's a recording of Joe Kubert and the EC Comics staff including Al Feldstein and William Gaines about who really invented 3-D comic books.

Team Cul de Sac panel audio at Baltimore Comic Con
"When Richard Thompson, the creator of the comic strip Cul de Sac, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, his friend Chris Sparks began a fundraising effort to honor his friend. With Richard's support, he asked others to donate artwork featuring the Cul de Sac characters for a Team Cul de Sac book with proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research. Now, join Chris Sparks and other members of Team Cul de Sac including Steve Conley, Matt Dembicki, SL Gallant, Roger Langridge, and others as they discuss the book, Richard Thompson's work, and their continuing efforts to raise funds in Richard's name." - from the program book. The panel also included Carolyn Belefski, Dawn Griffin, Donna Lewis, Joe Sutliff and was moderated by Mike Rhode.
