Steve Artley returns to editorial cartooning (after a fashion)

Steve sent me a note late last month,

Just wanted to let you know that I've opened a channel on YouTube and have begun posting various opuses from my archives. With Trump once again in the White House, I've found many of my cartoons from his first term seem to still apply. I put them into the YouTube video format, at times with effects and music.

I am also posting selected audio programs from my podcasts, again adjusting them to fit the YouTube video format. These are typically 1 to 3 minute spots steeped in satire often using parody to unabashedly ridicule Trump and his twisted, rabid pit-bull-on-steroids approach to governing. Spots are all written and produced by me, including voice work and musical performance recorded and mixed in my studios. With Trump well on course to reducing the USG to oligarchy, candid work of this nature may be outlawed. I may very well end up arrested. But, these products entered into evidence will make for an entertaining trial.

Please take a look. This is only the beginning. If you like what you see, please share with friends, colleagues, strangers, folks at the market and on the street. Subscribe (it costs nothing). LINK: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOlkAU_3xd1qDkSmn-49AtQ

I have also left FaceBook and Kid Zuckerberg (decorated member of the Trump Youth) and have joined the ranks on BlueSky Social: @artleytoons.bsky.social

He followed it up today with,

I wanted to let you know that I opened a "Store" on Redbubble, to sell prints and novelties using some of my artwork. It's just a start with only a few pieces so far, selecting from some existing pieces. But I will be adding more to it regularly, including new works. So, please keep checking back.

and another update,

I am also on Printify: https://artleytoons.printify.me/ which is turning out to be a bit better at showcasing the work

Land of Mirrors by María Medem

A presentation and Q&A with graphic novelist María Medem, in partnership with the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain.

By Lost City Books

Date and time

LocationLost City Books

2467 18th Street Northwest Washington, DC 20009

About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Seeped in flamenco rhythms, a hero’s journey of love and hope

Antonia is the sole inhabitant of a deserted town, with only a roaming pack of dogs and her own worn out memories to keep her company. Nothing is new in this world, the ponds are so still they are dead, and her recollections feel more vivid than her surroundings. At times, the isolation is unbearable. Until she meets her flower. Her flower gives her purpose: a reason to get up each morning, to ring the bells of the town, to wake up the fields, and to feel alive. And yet a relentless thought eats away at her—what will happen once her flower dies?

Her quest to save the flower begins alongside a charming traveler from the land of mirrors. The pair embark on a journey filled with music, swimming holes, and folk tales whispered late into the starry night. They march through the fields to the beat of turtledove calls, occasionally stopping to get drunk off the fruits of the strawberry tree. Slowly Antonia opens up to the world beyond her town, to the people who inhabit it—and to the endless possibilities of community and friendship.

One of Spain’s most successful contemporary illustrators, María Medem’s atmospheric storytelling bursts with sensorial delight—brimming with engrossing sounds, flavors, and tactile sensations. With impeccable line work and an enchanting use of color, Medem spins a heartfelt meditation on loneliness, friendship, and the transformative power of love.

Translated from Spanish by Aleshia Jensen and Daniela Ortiz.

About the author:

María Medem was born and lives in Seville, Spain. She began self-publishing fanzines after completing her fine arts studies. She’s been published by Terry Bleu (Netherlands), Studio Fidèle (France), and Apa Apa Cómics (Spain). Her latest two books, Cénit and Por Culpa de una Flor, (the Spanish edition of Land of Mirrors), were published by Apa Apa, the latter in collaboration with Blackie Books. In between comics work, María also spends time illustrating, animating, and going on walks with her greyhound.

María Medem will be in conversation with Warren Bernard.

Warren Bernard is is the Executive Director of Small Press Expo and a comics historian. Warren has lectured on various topics of comics history at the Library of Congress, University of Pennsylvania, The Center for Cartoon Studies and other institutions. His book Cartoons for Victory, was nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award, his second such nomination. Warren contributed articles to The Comics Journal, Military History and The Nib, as well as providing research, writing and materials from his collection to over 25 books on the subject of comics history. Warren has curated exhibits at the Society of Illustrators, Chicago Historical Society and Anne Arundel Community College, lending to those exhibitions as well as others. Warren established The Warren Bernard Collection as well as The Small Press Expo Collection, both at the Library of Congress, as well as establishing a named collection at Columbia University's Butler Library.

Pumping irony [ Michael Ramirez letters]

That darn Michael Ramirez

Pumping irony [ Michael Ramirez letters]

Katherine Murphy and Robert J. McManus
Washington Post March 8 2025: A15

Was Michael Ramirez's Feb. 25 editorial cartoon, "The weight is over," commissioned by the Trump administration? The cartoon used a mean stereotype to depict the government as getting fat on taxpayers' money. No, federal employees work hard to grant Americans security.

This cartoon enrages me because two friends unjustly lost their jobs. It enrages me because my friend who works at the Environmental Protection Agency had to drive into the office on a vacation day to email her five points demanded by Elon Musk. It enrages me because my sister's job at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which she always loved, has turned morose because of the siege mentality among federal workers. It enrages me because Ramirez mirrored the big lie about government that got Donald Trump elected and that is killing our democracy. Musk is not a trainer exercising the government to be healthier. He is an executioner, slashing agencies and cutting jobs with blind swipes of his big red chainsaw.

Katherine Murphy, Falls Church

Michael Ramirez is a talented artist who has won two Pulitzer Prizes for cartooning, and I greatly enjoy his painstakingly rendered artwork. It's his ideas that often fall short.

Take his Feb. 25 cartoon for example. Aside from the offices established by the Constitution, our "Government" is simply the sum of the departments, agencies and programs established by Congress and signed off on by a president — not something inflicted on a free people by outside forces. Are there programs we no longer wish to support? Are too many resources devoted to a given activity? Are there waste and fraud? By all means, focus on those and make adjustments accordingly, by legislative or administrative action. That's why we have congressional oversight and departmental inspectors general.

I have had some experience in government, including four years as a political appointee in a GOP administration, and I am confident I know more about the bureaucracy than Ramirez does. Whenever I hear someone complain without specifics that the government is "too big," my answer is a rhetorical question: "How big should a box be?"

Robert J. McManus, Bethesda

at the time, I posted this comment on the Post website, and my opinion hasn't changed.

How tone-deaf has the Post editorial page become to run this cartoon? I'm not in favor of censored cartoonists, but the Post's home readership of federal workers and contractors is suffering immensely during this phony pretense at government reform.

I got one 'clarifying' and 8 'thoughtful' ratings in the WaPo's ridiculous new 'comment' system.
