Carolyn Belefski's Total Solar Eclipse Enamel Pin Kickstarter ends Monday

She writes,

you have until this Monday to be a part of my latest Kickstarter -- raising funds to produce 100 limited edition soft enamel pins with a friendly celestial original illustrated design to celebrate the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse visiting North America on April 8, 2024. The pins will be 30mm diameter with production effects that include antique silver plating with etching on the moon craters. Each pin will be fixed with a magnet and comes with a backing card. The design portrays a happy moon with rosy cheeks, crescent eyes, and the Sun's corona showcased with white glow-in-the-dark enamel.
It's my attempt to bring some happiness and fun (a wearable memory) to this awesome phenomenon!

Feb 9: Dwightmess Gallery Opening reception for Lenora Yerkes

DWIGHTMESS is proud to announce its second exhibition of 2024, "Path to The Winter Feast," a sequence of narrative color paintings by Washington, D.C. area-based artist Lenora Yerkes.

"Path to The Winter Feast" is a room-sized experimental comic, featuring a series of fifty-three sequential paintings on panel. Pulling from both indie comics and painting traditions, the haunting narrative envisions a cycle of grief and legacy transmitted in a shimmering, surreal palette. A hand-held comic addendum with a different approach to the painting cycle's central story will also debut with the exhibit.

Lenora Yerkes,, a comics artist as well as a painter, draws on both low and high art traditions in creating unreal landscapes and the figures that live in them. Always narrative and often sequential, her paintings rely on metaphor and archetypes to tell disquieting, moody stories about family and the individual.

Yerkes is a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts, where she was a Yozo Hamaguchi Scholar. She has completed artist residencies at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (Washington DC), with Short Run Seattle, and was awarded a 2020 Artist Fellowship Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Her comic "Rage Queen" was included in the "Drawing Power" anthology edited by Diane Noomin, named by the New York Times one of the best comics of 2019. She is a member of The Residents Collective, founded in 2022.

Calvin and Hobbes part of Abe Books' "Most expensive sales in 2023"

Most expensive sales in 2023

Literary masterpieces, fantasy, poetry, a comic strip, and more.

Welcome to our most expensive sales of 2023. The list features a remarkable collection from Thomas Pynchon, author of 'One of the Longest, Most Difficult, Most Ambitious Novels in Years,' iconic works from the minds of Walt Whitman and Adam Smith, and a signed color proof from the well-loved comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes.

#10  Calvin and Hobbes: The Last Sunday, "Let's Go Exploring" by Bill Watterson - $35,000

Calvin and Hobbes - Let's Go Exploring
Signed color proof, 250 x 350 mm (approx. 10 x 13.5"); image size approximately 225 x 323 mm; printed in black and half-tone colors, light handling creases to margins

A rarity, this large color proof of the final Calvin and Hobbes strip is signed by Bill Watterson.

Calvin and Hobbes was a daily comic strip that ran between 1985 and 1995. It became hugely successful and was featured in thousands of newspapers around the globe.

This signed color proof was one of a small number produced and sent as a thank-you gift from Watterson to select newspapers who carried the strip.

Sold by Manhattan Rare Book Company

If you are of a certain age (like I am), you may remember opening the newspaper on December 31, 1995 with a little bit of excitement and more than a little bit of sadness, to see what Bill Watterson created for the last strip of his beloved Calvin and Hobbes. After 10 years and 3100 strips, it was all coming to an end. And Watterson didn't disappoint. Here is that last strip, and it's a perfect, joyous, and hopeful ending. Against a backdrop of fresh white snow serving as a template for possibilities, Calvin and Hobbes remind us that it is, after all, a magical world - let's go exploring.

Michael de Adder no longer under contract with The Washington Post?

Michael de Adder appears to no longer be under contract with The Washington Post. He's not listed as one of their three cartoonists on their Editorial Cartoon page, although Ann Telnaes, Edith Pritchett, and Michael Ramirez are. de Adder's contributor page now reads "Michael de Adder was a political cartoonist for The Washington Post." [emphasis added] and his last cartoon was January 16th. I reached out to Mr. de Adder, whom I know slightly, but have not received a reply from him. A WaPo source confirmed that he is no longer with the paper, but did not know the reason for it.

The Post still does not have a full-time editorial cartoonist, continuing to disdain the legacy of Herblock and Toles.
