Bethesda, Maryland - June 20, 2019

Media Release - Small Press Expo is proud to announce the first group of Special Guests for SPX 2019. The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables, over 20 programming slots and additional hands-on workshops to introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics. Additional Special Guests will be announced soon.

SPX 2019 is honored to have the following creators as Special Guests to this year's show:
Raina Telgemeier
With more than 15 million books in print, Raina Telgemeier is one of the most critically acclaimed and successful graphic novelists of her generation. She is the #1 New York Times bestselling creator of Smile (2010) and Sisters (2014), graphic memoirs based on her childhood. She is also the creator of Drama (2012), a fictional graphic novel which was named an ALA Stonewall Honor Book and is another #1 New York Times bestseller, and Ghosts (2016), another #1 New York Times bestselling work of fiction, which was awarded the 2017 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids. Raina's latest work is Share Your Smile: Raina's Guide to Telling Your Own Story.

Raina lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. To learn more, visit her online at www.goRaina.com and at @GoRaina.
Box Brown
Box Brown is an Ignatz Award-winning cartoonist, illustrator, and comic publisher from Philadelphia. His books include the New York Times-bestselling Andre the Giant: Life and Legend, Tetris: The Games People Play, and Is This Guy For Real?: The Unbelievable Andy Kaufman. Box Brown's independent comics publishing house, Retrofit Comics, was launched in 2011. His newest book is Cannabis: The Illegalization of Weed in America, a searing nonfiction graphic novel about cannabis.
Eleanor Davis
Eleanor Davis is a cartoonist and illustrator. Her books include How To Be Happy, You and a Bike and a Road, Why Art? and The Secret Science Alliance and the Copycat Crook. The Hard Tomorrow is Eleanor's first book published by Drawn & Quarterly. She lives in Athens, Georgia.

Eleanor Davis's The Hard Tomorrow blazes unrestrained, as moments of human connection are doused in fear and threats. Her astute projections probe at current anxieties in a cautionary tale that begs the question: What will happen after tomorrow?
Ed Piskor
Ed Piskor (b. 1982) lives and draws out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a former student of the Kubert School, has collaborated with Harvey Pekar, and put out the graphic novel Wizzywig. His New York Times Best-Selling series Hip Hop Family Tree, which was originally serialized on Boing Boing, has gone back to print numerous times, and won the 2015 Eisner Award for "Best Reality-Based Work." His series for Marvel, X-Men Grand Design, was released in 2017 to wide acclaim, and 2019 will see the release of the a large-scale, career-spanning artist's edition of his work, Ed Piskor: The Fantagraphics Studio Edition.
Emily Carroll
Emily Carroll is a writer and artist of numerous award-winning comics, including the horror collection Through the Woods, which won both an Eisner and the British Fantasy Award for 2014. Her most recent work is When I Arrived at the Castle from Koyama Press. Her online comics work include numerous short stories, with subject matter ranging from haunted rivers to ravenous hand lotions. Her most recent work is a graphic novel adaptation of Laurie Halse Anderson's 1999 novel Speak. She lives in Stratford, ON with two dogs, one cat, and her wonderful and talented wife, Kate.
Jaime Hernandez
Jaime Hernandez was born and raised in Oxnard, California. Together with his brothers Gilbert and Mario, Jaime co-created the comics series Love and Rockets in 1981, which Gilbert and Jaime continue to this day. Jaime's work is a perfect synthesis of the anarchistic, DIY aesthetic of the punk scene and elegant cartooning reminiscent of Charles Schulz and Alex Toth. Love and Rockets has evolved into one of the great bodies of American literary fiction, spanning four decades and countless high-water marks in the medium's history. In 2017, Jaime and Gilbert were inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. This year, he adds two new collections to the Love and Rockets catalog: Is This How You See Me? and Tonta.
Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together more than 650 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators. The expo includes a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year's guests.

The Ignatz Award is a festival prize held every year at SPX recognizing outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning, with the winners chosen by attendees at the show.

As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries. For more information on the Small Press Expo, please visit http://www.smallpressexpo.com.

Attendees will learn about what happens behind the scenes in creating a graphic novel, the careful work of translating cultural context and languages, marketing, issues around censorship, and how to advocate for an inclusive, international collection.

6:30-8:30pm, Conrad, Grand D

The event provides graphic novel librarians the opportunity to network with other librarians, creators, authors, publishers, and industry professionals. The annual reception is dedicated to the three winning library systems and celebrates librarians for the crucial role they have played in the phenomenal growth of the graphic novel in libraries. While Will Eisner helped to create the graphic novel format, leading librarians have long-championed the many benefits of the graphic novel and comics to the world's readers of all ages. The grants are juried by leading professionals in the field. They are funded by the Will & Ann Eisner Family Foundation and sponsored by the ALA Graphic Novels and Comics in Libraries Round Table. GNCRT Membership Meeting
12-1pm, Washington Convention Center, 207B

GNCRT President's Program - State of the Comics Union: Past, Present, and Future
1-2:30pm, Washington Convention Center, 146B

Comics have changed dramatically over the last twenty years. Not only has the format itself changed in terms of platforms and media, but new creators and readers have transformed library collections. Comics are now broadly accepted and celebrated. In the newly established Graphic Novels & Comics Roundtable's first President's program, we invite innovative, stellar creators to discuss from their perspective how the format has changed. We will discuss how libraries and librarians have influenced their work and where they see room for growth as we enter the next decade. All of our programs and events at ALA Annual take stock of the state of the comics union; discussions continue during the entire conference. Together, let's reflect on how far we've come, where we are today and envision what our future may bring.
Speakers: Jason Lutes, Raina Telgemeier, Jaime Hernandez

Discussing Social Issues through Speculative Comics
2:30-3:30pm, Marriott Marquis, Monument

Since Mary Shelley, science fiction has explored issues of identity, race, inequality, and injustice. Creators in speculative genres cross boundaries and break barriers. Attendees will hear about the creators and their work, understand the challenges of writing about complex social issues, learn approaches to collecting in the genre, and gain a broader understanding of science fiction, fantasy, and speculative works that reflects today's current issues.
Speakers: Ezra Daniels, Sanford Greene, David Walker, Delilah Dawson, Greg Pak

LGBTQ+ Creators and Characters in Kids, Tween, and Teen Comics
4-5pm, Marriott Marquis, Monument

LGBTQIA+ creators and characters are increasingly visible in comics for young readers, from kids through to teens. This panel brings together queer creators and allies to discuss the importance of centering queer stories, working to break stereotypes and the importance of giving all young readers the chance to meet queer characters in comics pages. Creators will talk about their inspirations, new and upcoming works, and how kids comics can create space for even more narratives.
Speakers: Colleen AF Venable, Wendy Xu, Melanie Gillman, Carly Usdin

Monday, June 24

Exploring Trauma and Recovery through Comics
9-10am, Washington Convention Center, 158A-B

Trauma is life-changing, from living through the explosive conflict of a war zone to recovering from personal ordeals. Eyewitness accounts are particularly well evoked in the constraints and freedoms of a graphic narrative. This panel will draw together creators who can speak from their first-hand knowledge of violence and the work that goes into expressing a traumatic event in comics. Attendees will learn about expressing strong emotion and experiences graphically, the difficulties of first-person narration and reportage, and receive suggestions for their collections.
Speakers: Tom King, Travis Dandro, Gina Siciliano, Ted Rall

PR: The Book of Sarah (off-topic, but by a friend of ComicsDC)

THE BOOK OF SARAH
SARAH LIGHTMAN

Published 23 May 2019
Price £19.99
ISBN 978-1-908434-51-7
BIC Code FXZ
BISAC Code BIO037000, CGN008000

The Book of Sarah is missing from the bible, so artist Sarah Lightman sets out to make her own: questioning religion, family, motherhood and what it takes to
be an artist, in this quietly subversive visual autobiography from NW3. Distilled
from hundreds of intensely beautiful diary drawings into a compelling narrative
of identity, The Book of Sarah is both a comfort and inspiration to anyone who
wants to know how to belong as an artist to a family, a culture, and a religion.

Praise for The Book of Sarah
'A wonderful, absorbing, enjoyable book. There is so much in it. It's like making a new intimate friend AND it will help people who have been through their own rites of passage or need to. I love it A LOT!' Philippa Perry
'An astounding work of insight and clarity… so eloquently expressed, especially the family's long-standing tradition of stifling ambition, autonomy and independence— thereby thwarting so much potential - that it almost broke me. It will resonate with so many, helping to show them that they're not alone.' Stephen Holland, Page 45
'Full of the most wonderful drawings. An important feminist book—as well as a real joy to read.' Bobby Baker
'Absolutely beautiful. It's so moving to see such intimately domestic moments
collected and sanctified.' Leah Vincent
'An extraordinary treasure… heartfelt and honest, searching and tender.' Maureen Burdock
'I loved this subtle memoir about Judaism, feminism, bad dates and good books, the families we are born into and the ones we make.' Ariela Freedman
'Stunning…The power of the book lies in the atmosphere created by a distilled
emotion in the words, alongside the very haunting images.' Ann Miller
'An achingly poignant, profoundly moving and, ultimately, hopeful book.' Ruth
Gilbert
'I love The Book of Sarah. A deeply layered work—a memoir that is rich with
revelations.' Samantha Baskind

Praise for Sarah Lightman
'Lightman is … a tour de force'. Hillary Chute, Images
'The real power in the work comes from Lightman's wit and imagination, which
has a lightness that belies the seriousness of the existential questions within.' Nadia Valman and Rachel Garfield, Jewish Quarterly.
'Sarah Lightman is like the poster-child for a new kind of feminist activist— scholar, artist, curator, and cheerleader for comics that reveal and shape new forms of Jewish consciousness'. Ariel Kahn, Jewish Quarterly
