This 24th-25th of August 2013 will be a day like no other. You will wake up. You will put on cosplay (you will hopefully shower before hand). And you will live without regulations. It WILL be bold. It WILL be daring. But know that out there in the world, others will be joining you on this epic endeavor. Welcome to International Cosplay Day founded by Cosplayer Jennifer Alice International Cosplay Day is a celebration for Cosplayers with meet-ups held in Florida, Washington, DC, Japan and other locations around the world.

For those who are unfamiliar Cosplay is a Japanese term meaning Costume play as coined by Nov Takahashi head of the Japanese Studio, Studio Hard. This is when fans ofJapanese animation and comics dress up as their favorite characters by making their own costumes.

International Cosplay Day is sponsored by DC Anime Club a non for profit youth base organization in Washington, DC whose purpose is to educate people in Washington, DC about East Asian culture through Japanese Animation (anime) and comics (manga). International Cosplay Facebook group page is a good place to meet people from your area and start brainstorming. Baltimore Comic-Con Welcomes Back Neal and Josh Adams   BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - July 31, 2013 - The Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the return of Neal and Josh Adams as guests for this year's show, taking place September 7-8, 2013 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Neal and Josh join the growing line-up of talent attending the 14th annual show.    Silver Age artist and creator-rights advocate, Neil Adams' work on such DC Comics characters as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow throughout the '60s and '70s redefined an era of comics, and brought a photo-realistic feel to the pages of their respective books. His eye for detail and definition elevated the art form to levels that had previously been seen only in fantasy illustration.    In the late-'60s, while freelancing for DC Comics, Adams also began working at Marvel Comics on X-Men with Roy Thomas. He continued to work for DC and Marvel throughout the late-'60s and '70s, working on the titles The Avengers, Detective Comics, and Green Lantern/Green Arrow.    In addition, Adams crusaded for years to secure pensions and recognition for Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, creators of Superman and, in 1978, he helped form the Comics Creators Guide. He was inducted into the Eisner Awards' Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998, and the Harvey Awards' Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999. Most recently, he finished working on the covers for Marvel Comics' First X-Men.    Josh Adams, the artist for IDW's Doctor Who series, has achieved notoriety on the Internet for his exquisitely designed Sherlock Holmes illustrations. He has worked throughout the industry for companies such as DC Comics (House of Mystery, JSA, Batman Odyssey) and Marvel Comics (Astonishing X-Men Motion Comic), as well as on Syfy shows like Eureka, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, and Alphas.   "I love Baltimore because they know that the best crabs come from the Bay and the best comics are found at the Baltimore Comic-Con," said Josh of the Baltimore Comic-Con and the city that hosts it. In addition, Josh launched a new webcomic series in mid-July, called In the Garden of Steven (www.InTheGardenOfSteven.com). Produced by Blind Ferret Entertainment, the comic is written and drawn by Adams, with colors by Luis Delgado and letters by Brandon DeStefano, and follows the (mis)adventures of Steve Morrison after he mysteriously wakes up in the Garden of Eden. PSA: Paul Conrad's Chain Reaction

Hey Cartoon Pals, Patriots and Associates--

I'm writing on behalf of an old friend of many of us.  Paul Conrad did a bunch of things, drew a lot of great cartoons, won a bunch of Pulitzers, made Nixon's enemies list, encouraged some of us to do this crazy political cartoon thing... and he also did some great sculpture.  The biggest and most public of these sculptures is now in jeopardy.

Conrad's Chain Reaction is a big bold political sculpture on the grounds of Santa Monica City Hall.  It may be the biggest single and lasting piece of art created by an American political cartoonist… and it's in jeopardy.  Paul's son David and a bunch of art lovers and political activists are mounting an effort to save it.  They need to raise a bunch of money to do this.

If you could donate money directly to the effort (it's tax deductible) that's the simplest way to support their efforts.  If you can do more, donate some art to their upcoming auction  and help recruit others to donate, write about it on your blogs or newsletters all that would help even more.

Matt Davies at Politics and Prose pictures

Editorial cartoonist Matt Davies was at Politics and Prose, July 27, 2013 for his new children's book Ben Rides On. Here's some more pictures of him in action.

The book is short, but enjoyable. Davies did a nice chalk talk with children from the audience 'helping' him draw. He kindly let me keep his crow drawing. The Library of Congress (in the person of Sara Duke) got the caricature of his teacher.

Bmore Into Comics

Baltimore-based cartoonist Monica Gallagher is kicking off a series of one-day comics shows at various hangouts in Charm City. Called Bmore Into Comics, the first show ("#1") on Aug. 24 will be held at Bad Decisions from noon-5 p.m. and will feature a few D.C. Conspiracy members, including Rafer Roberts and Carolyn Belefski. Also on tap: Danielle Corsetto, Melody Often and Howie Noeldechen.

The artists included in the exhibition approach their topic with a mix of levity and seriousness, using the figure of the superhero to explore issues of identity, immigration, and the struggles of daily life. The Art of the Super Hero - Revisited features photography, painting, and mixed media work by F. Lennox Campello, Carla Goldberg, Simon Monk, Dulce Pinzón, and Andrew Wodzianski. The exhibition opens with a reception in the Capitol Skyline Lounge on Friday, August 2, 2013 from 6-8pm and runs from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 25, 2013.    ABOUT HOTHOUSE Hothouse is a new series of exhibitions, installations, and events organized by Washington Project for the Arts and taking place in the Capitol Skyline Hotel Lounge. J. Coleman's 'The White Hush' exhibit

J. Coleman, a Washington, D.C., painter, sculptor and muralist, is having a solo show at The Dunes, with an opening reception on Aug. 2 from 7-10 p.m.  Here's a description of his show, "The White Hush": "The works depict the heroic archetype male figures and female figures suggesting fertility goddess. The works are a commentary on the mythos associated with comic books, video games, and popular culture."

Institute for the Arts summer program

Last week I visited with students in grades 7-12 in the cartooning program at the Institute for the Arts, a summer program in Fairfax, Va. We had a great conversation about the comics-making process (from thumbnailings to printing), getting published and working shows and events to get your name out there. I also showed them some of the original art from District Comics and Magic Bullet.

Comics Jam & Scribbler's Cabal

Date: August 19 - 23, 10 a.m. to noon

Comics Jam & Scribbler's Cabal is a read-aloud session and drawing free-for-all for ages 8 and up. Like a book club for comic fans, but more heavy on the fun than on the analysis. Kids can bring in their own drawings to share. It's less of a How to Draw class than a Why to Draw and How to Keep Enjoying it class. We'll read comics, draw comics, discuss each other's work, make up our own characters, draw each other's characters, and have a blast.

Bring pencils or pens, paper, and a love of either comics or drawing—or both!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
A graduate of the drama program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Dave Burbank has worked for the Takoma Park Maryland Library for over 15 years. An illustrator and comics enthusiast, he is the curator of the library's remarkable graphic novel collection (over 30 titles) having built it from scratch and read every panel. He teaches a yearly seminar on the History and Importance of Comics to students of the University of Maryland's graduate College of Library and Information Sciences; to Montgomery County Public School media specialists at their In-Service Learning Day; and to various area schools. He has appeared on a panel discussion on "Graphic Novels in Libraries" at the independent comics' premier convention The Small Press Expo (SPX 2011).

As an illustrator and writer he is the creator of the Takoma Park Library's SummerQuest interactive reading game, as well as stacks and stacks of pads full of half-finished comics and fascinating doodles. He keeps an occasional blog on issues relating to comics in libraries at comixtakoma.wordpress.com. A father of three, he lives in suburban Maryland.
