The comic strip has its roots in advertising as well as in art. In the first book-length study of these dual sources, Rick Marschall, founder of Nemo: The Classic Comics Library, and Warren Bernard, a prolific commentator on and extensive collector of cartoons as well as the Executive Director of Small Press Expo, look at work from the 1870s to 1940, documenting how popular cartoon characters like the Yellow Kid, Little Orphan Annie, and Popeye have figured in advertising campaigns, and how their creators were highly sought-after pitchmen, selling products alongside the best movie stars in Hollywood. As part of his presentation, Bernard will have on-hand select original ads and other advertisting items from the era.
In anticipation of Small Press Expo (SPX) 2011 - being held September 10-11 in Bethesda, MD - a complimentary one-day pass to the show will be available with the purchase of Drawing Power at Politics and Prose on the night of the event. More information about SPX 2011 at www.spxpo.com.

March 25: Ian Rankin at Politics and Prose
Rankin's written the recent Dark Entries Hellblazer graphic novel for DC Comics. This signing is for his new detective novel, but I'm sure he'll sign and take questions about the comic. I've seen him before and he's an entertaining speaker. I'll be there.

TRUDEAU When Brian Walker first interviewed Garry Trudeau in 1973, it was for an article on the new comix for the alternative weekly, Silver Lining. While Trudeau denied being a spokesman for the counterculture, it became a label that he had difficulty shaking. Walker later curated the first exhibition of Trudeau's work. DOONESBURY AND THE ART OF G.B. TRUDEAU (Yale Univ., $49.95) explores the evolution of the artist from his prep-school drawing to Bull Notes, the predecessor of Doonesbury, and the impact the series has had on pop culture, from the Broadway musical to ties and Starbucks mugs. Walker also introduces the collaborators Trudeau has worked with over the years. There are plenty of strips here as well, from those early days to the present. It's a lovely companion to 40: A DOONESBURY RETROSPECTIVE (Andrews McMeel, $100), which contains 1,800 strips Trudeau selected as representative of the 40 years since Gonzo, Mike, J.J. Politics and Prose's Carla F. Cohen 1936-2010
This is one of my all-time favorite bookstores, and they've had a lot of cartoonists come through in recent years. Ms. Cohen was one of the two owners. Politics and Prose's release follows.

Carla F. Cohen With deep sorrow, I am writing to inform our friends and neighbors that my beloved store co-owner Carla Cohen died this morning. For all of us here at Politics & Prose, it is difficult to believe that someone larger than life is gone, and I will deeply miss my friend and partner. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that contributions may be made to Jews United for Justice, the Washington Literacy Council or Community Hospice. A funeral will be held at Tifereth Israel, 7701 16th Street, N.W. Please read the obituary from the Washington Post here.

Readers know Niffenegger from The Time Traveler’s Wife, but her involvement with books is visual as well as literary. A professor at the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, she has produced two “novels-in-pictures,” and now a graphic novel. First serialized in The Guardian, this is the story of Alexandra, a reader who becomes a librarian in order to find the elusive night bookmobile containing everything she has ever read.

8 p.m. Co-founder of the Center for Cartoon Studies, Sturm has set this beautifully crafted historical fiction in the Eastern European countryside of the 1900s. His day in the life of Mendleman, a carpet peddler, uses spare narrative and finely-honed images to achieve a powerful emotional resonance.
