Onion newspaper not printed in DC anymore

The DCist reports that the Onion has ended its paper in the city after five years. The print version was still carrying 1 comic strip - Red Meat, and possibly Ward Sutton's fake editorial cartoon, as well as interviews with cartoonists.

Comic Riffs interviews Ward Sutton

PARODY OF THE DAY: The story behind 'How WikiLeaks Stole Christmas'
By Michael Cavna
Washington Post Comic Riffs blog December 13 2010

Sutton's one of my favorite cartoonists - we need a collection of his work. He's done strips for TV Guide, and cartoon book reviews for Barnes and Noble's website...

Comics, comics and comics in today's Post

I read the paper copy of Bob Thompson's long article on graphic novels this morning. It's enlivened by three strips by Thompson and Jonathan Bennett by the way. The article is an absolutely competent examination of what a 'graphic novel' is and isn't and why one might care. Thompson talked to the right people (Mouley, Tomine, distributors, publishers, Scott McCloud) and drew the standard conclusions that comics can be about just about anything. However, I know Thompson put a lot more research into this than shows in the article - he came to the talk last fall that PEN sponsored with Ware and Barry. He also went to the Shakespeare manga talk at the Folger. So give this article a read.

Over in the Book World, Douglas Wolk reviews four comic books too. Feiffer, Dash Shaw, Chaykin's American Flagg! and McCloud's Zot!

On the cover of the Source section, there's a lovely drawing by Ward Sutton on the demonization of DC by politicians.

Ward Sutton in today's Washington Post

Ward Sutton's got a comics journalism piece in today's Washington Post business section, which annoyingly enough, just recapitulates the article it goes with "Adventures in Hypermiling". It's not online either.

Schulz bio cartoon in The Onion

"Kelly" (aka Ward Sutton) has a cartoon in the Onion on the stands now, "Happiness is a warm dose of truth (at last)" about the Michaelis biography of Schulz. Couldn't find it online though...

...so I'll describe it. People are throwing copies of Peanuts books in the trash can while Charlie Brown says "Suddenly I don't feel like such a LOSER after all," while holding up a newspaper headlined, "New Schulz Bio exposes cartoonist to be a lonely, pathetic philanderer" while 'Kelly' says, "Mr. Success, the original blockhead," in the lower right corner.
