Fantom Comics: Controversial ‘Before Watchmen’ to be Released in June

Controversial 'Before Watchmen' to be Released in June
Will the prequels be Star Wars prequels bad or original Watchmen awesome?

June 6th marks the debut issue of Before Watchman – arguably the most controversial comic book to be released since the Death of Superman 20 years ago.

Next week, Time Warner and DC Comics will release the first  issue of Before Watchmen, the prequel to the original.

Alan Moore – the reclusive British writer of Watchmen famous for his worship of a snake god – insisted that this comic not be made. The fact that the genius behind the series is missing from the project has certainly raised eyebrows among fans and industry insiders alike. Some stores are refusing to even stock the books.
Despite the star power of the artists and writers involved (Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, Amanda Conner, J. Michael Straczynski, Andy & Joe Kubert and Jae Lee among others), and the full backing of Time Warner/DC Comics, the release of the series is already raising hackles for many fans.

Matthew Klokel, owner of Fantom Comics in Union Station, certainly believes so. "There's been lots of controversy in this store. On the one hand, people hate that Moore isn't involved, and they still have a bad taste in their mouth from the awful Star Wars prequels." But it's not all black and white, stresses Klokel. "For one thing, the original artist, Dave Gibbons, fully endorses the project." Will Fantom Comics be stocking the comic? "You betcha," says Klokel. "We've ordered a ton. Personally, I can't wait to read them."

The original Watchman was published in 1986. To this day, many consider this 12-issue series to be the greatest superhero comic of all time.  Since its release, fans have been left with nowhere to go. Next week marks the first glimpse of the Watchman series in over a quarter century.

You can find the first issue of the first mini-series, Before Watchmen: Minutemen, at Fantom Comics, located on the East Mezzanine Level of Union Station, or online from Fantom's Digital Store on Wednesday, June 6th.

June 7: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women and More!

The Ann Loeb Bronfman Gallery Presents:Graphic Details with title
Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women
June 7 - September 2, 2012
Opening Reception
Thursday, June 7
6:00 - 8:00 pm
Remarks at 7:00 pm by:
Michael Kaminer & Sara Lightman, co-curators
Zachary Levine, Yeshiva University Museum Curator
Spotlighting the raw, revealing voices of Jewish women and their singular presence in graphic storytelling, the exhibition illuminates the intersection of experiences that make these diaristic comics so compelling. Funny, outrageous, poignant and embarrassingly intimate all at once, the works in "Graphic Details" reflect the artists' individual journeys, refracted through a distinctively Jewish lens in a pop-culture art form. Some bare their bodies. Some expose their psyches. All are fearless about sex, romance, politics, body functions, experiences, emotions and desires.

June 1: John Fantucchio art exhibit opening

From: Mary Fantucchio:

"John G. Fantucchio will have three paintings on display in Alexandria at the Del Ray Artisans Gallery. We'd like to invite you to the opening reception - food and drinks will be served. Come and meet John on Friday, June 1, 7 - 10. The title of the show is 'Art On the Edge.' It's an all experimental art exhibit. His stuff may look like something you'd find hanging in the lounge on the Starship Enterprise - but sorry, no comic book artwork. The address is 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA, 22301-1124. Their phone number is 703-838-4827."

For those joining us late, John is a comics fanzine artist of the 1960s who turned to fine art and teaching.

Stan "The Man" Returns to Baltimore as

2012 Guest of Honor!

Stan Lee pictureBALTIMORE, MARYLAND - May 30, 2012 - The Baltimore Comic-Con is honored to officially announce that Stan "The Man" Lee will be the returning as the Guest of Honor for the second year in a row at this year's convention. The show will be taking place at the Baltimore Convention Center the weekend of September 8-9, 2012.

Lee will only be making public appearances on Saturday, September 8, 2012, signing autographs and posing for photographs with guests in attendance of the show.

"Stan's first appearance at the Baltimore Comic-Con was an unmitigated success last year," said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "Having him return for a second go-around is simply amazing and a great opportunity for those who missed him last year to meet a living legend in the comic industry!"

Known the world over as the architect of the Marvel Universe, Lee-along with Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko-co-created some of the most iconic characters of the Silver Age, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange.

Lee began his career in comics in 1939 at the age of 16, working for Martin Goodman at Timely Comics. He made his writing debut in 1941 with a text filler story in Captain America Comics #3 and wrote his first back-up story for the title two issues later. Lee continued to write for the publisher and, at the age of 19, was installed as interim editor. With a head for business and an eye for comics, Lee graduated to become editor-in-chief and art director of the comics division.

Throughout his illustrious career, which has spanned more than 70 years, Lee has been a writer, editor, publisher, President, and Chairman at Marvel Comics. He's made cameo appearances in 15 films based on his creations-including this summer's record-breaking blockbuster, The Avengers.

In October of 2011, Lee joined with 1821 Comics to the start "Stan Lee's Kids Universe," a multimedia comic imprint whose purpose is to produce new kids material. Most recently, he co-wrote the graphic novel, Romeo and Juliet: The War - a reimagining of the classic Shakespeare tale with a sci-fi twist-which debuted at No. 7 on the New York Times best-seller list for both the hardcover and trade paperback.

"We couldn't be happier to welcome back the biggest star in all of comics," said Nathan. "Not only is this a real treat for us, but one for the fans planning to attend the show as well!"

In addition to his Baltimore Comic-Con appearance on Saturday, Stan will participate in the Harvey Awards on Saturday evening. Details regarding ticket pricing for autographs, photographs, and VIP packages will be released over the next few weeks. Comic Review

 Hulk Smash Avengers

hulk smashThis is issue #5 of a 5 issue mini-series.  In Hulk Smash Avengers #1 we see Hulk and the Avengers back in the 60's and each issue after that has been a new decade, the 70s, 80's, 90s, and now current day (or maybe just a few years ago).

This one focuses on Red Hulk with Banner playing a background role.   The Red Hulk is fighting the New Avengers and no one knows who he is.  Iron Man is trying to work with Banner, who is currently under lock and key, trying to figure out WHO is this new Red Hulk.

Banner is very reluctant to help out because this issue takes place after Planet Hulk, where Banner was not treated very well.

Not knowing much about Red Hulk, this issue was very helpful to me.  I learned a little bit about him and got to see the New Avengers back in action again.

These 5 issues have been great fun to read.  We also have postcards for each issue in the store for free if you would like one the next time you are in.

I would recommend this series to everyone.  Especially for people that don't know much about Hulk and Red Hulk.  But for those of you that do, these titles re-tell some stories that you may be familiar with from a different angle.

--Louis

June 30: Danger Club comic signing

Danger Club Signing

May 25, 2012 by   of Convention Scene

Landry Quinn Walker and Eric Jones sign at Third Eye Comics on Saturday June 30, 2012 from 11am-1pm.

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

In continuing some of the awesome in-store signings we've had with recent IMAGE hits like PETER PANZERFAUST, STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE, HEART and more, we're stoked to announce that we're going to be doing a BIG launch signing for DANGER CLUB #3 this JUNE.

This book is something special, folks. The concept. The artwork. The storytelling. It's the total package, and we are totally excited about every second of it. If you took Brian K. Vaughan's RUNAWAYS, Nick Spencer's MORNING GLORIES, and then applied the dark filter of WATCHMEN to them… you'd get DANGER CLUB.

We're pretty pumped to let you know we'll have creators LANDRY QUINN WALKER and ERIC JONES in store at THIRD EYE COMICS in ANNAPOLIS to sign copies of their new series.

What's DANGER CLUB? In a world of heroes and villains, the greatest super-heroes fly off to space to take down an unstoppable force… but they don't come back. And, they've left behind their sidekicks to take care of the planet — or destroy it.

A visceral, brutal, and angry look at teen sidekicks, something we haven't seen intensity like since BRAT PACK, this new series is one of my most anticipated of the Summer.

My gut instinct just looking at preview pages is that of BRIAN K. VAUGHAN'S RUNAWAYS put through the filter of WATCHMEN.

The writing is sharp, with great dialogue, and very cool spins on familiar superhero archetypes of the superhero genre, and Eric Jones's artwork brings the book to life in a BIG and EXCITING way.

Imagine a world of super-powered teenagers who lack the guidance of their mentors? An entire generation raised in a culture of violence who lack the temperament that comes with age. And, while the superheroes normally come back from these big cosmic crisis and wars… they're not coming back this time, so Earth is pretty screwed.

Very cool stuff, Third Eye Faithful! Make sure you pick up issue #1 on April 4th, and jump on board, so you can join us on Saturday 6/30 for our big launch party of DANGER CLUB #3, and you can get Landry and Eric to sign copies of 1-3 for you!

Before he reached fame with The Amazing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange, Steve Ditko drew hundreds of comic book. Never before reprinted!

Lemire instantly has great dialogue between the characters, the comic feels very lively, and the group is off to South America to fight blood cultists under the control of Felix Faust! A great jumping on point.
