Rob Ullman of Richmond has long had ties to the DC area. For years, he illustrated Dan Savage's Savage Love column in the Washington City Paper. He's also been at every SPX. I commissioned this drawing of the Shadow and Margo Lane from him at SPX, and it arrived today. I quite like it.

Cartoonists and others at Baltimore Comic Con.
The Con is the busiest and biggest that I've ever seen and continues through today. Labels to come later, but the name of the person is in the file name.

Pictures of cartoonists made my life so wonderful... continued
Once again, I've fallen behind on posting my photographs of local events. Here's a catch-up for May and early-June.
From the ANS Convention:
Frank Cho doing a quick sketch for me. It's the Shadow of course...
Jerry & Penelope Gaylord and Brian Turner - the Franchize Studio folks.
Ducky's Comics booth - Don and a much-more attractive relative modelling his new t-shirts.
More ANS Con pictures can be seen here.
Glen Echo Park in Maryland outside the Adventure Theatre - Cartoonist Lincoln "Big Nate" Peirce. And here too.
Disney's Tinkerbell "You Don't Need Magic To Use Energy Wisely" public service announcement poster. Another shot here.
Cartoonist Rachel Scheer at One More Page Books.

OT: Matt Wagner and the Shadow
I'm posting this article because Matt's experiences eerily parallel mine - the 1970's DC Comic, buying back issues (Archie's abysmal Radio Comics series in my case), the LP records (bought at a used book/record store in Bergenfield, NJ), the Steranko-covered Pyramid novels (bought at the Garden State Plaza before its steroidal growth)....

Unlike Matt, I didn't become a comic book creator though. And he's absolutely spot-on when he says "The process of collecting comics used to involve a certain sense of mystery that's missing from today's fandom, where a quick internet search can hook you up with pretty much anything your budget can afford." Late last year I decided to read the 1960s Belmont novels which set the Shadow in then-present day. After 30 years of looking for them and finding 3 or 4 in used bookstores, I completed my set in a few minutes on the internet.

Snyder, King and Hatke at Capicons
The bi-monthly Capicons con at Tyson's Corner saw a few new faces today. I picked up a couple of pieces of original art as a result (and blew my budget, but if you go to the show with friends, you can borrow money from them).
Baltimore County's John K Snyder III did this Shadow sketch with the money going to Hero Initiative charity. Keep an eye out on IDW's variant covers for the Shadow as John is doing one in 2013.
Front Royal's Ben Hatke's Zita the Spacegirl original art for page 98. Zita's aimed at kids, but I like it a lot.
Ben Hatke's Zita the Spacegirl original art for chapter breaks. He tossed this one in after I bought the previous.
Washington's Tom King was signing his book A Once Crowded Sky, a novel about what happens when all the superheroes vanish, but the supervillains don't. I reviewed it for the City Paper and had the strange experience of seeing my words as a pull quote on his banner. I liked the book enough to buy another copy for a comics-collecting buddy's Christmas present. King told me that some additional comic book news from him should come out this week - remind me to follow up if I don't post something here.

Today: John K Snyder III at Capicons
Baltimore artist John K Snyder III is appearing at Capicons on December 2.

John did a lovely page in the Team Cul de Sac book, so you should buy a copy and have him sign it. He's appearing on behalf of Hero Initiative charity.
I just bought a beautiful sketch of the Shadow for $20 for Hero Initiative!

Josh Lyman sketches of the Shadow
When I interviewed Josh Lyman recently I picked up copies of his two sketchbooks. He did these two Shadow sketches for me at the time, almost doubling my collection of them.

Roger Langridge's The Shadow sketch
A late holdover from SPX 2010 - this great sketch Roger Langridge did for me. I just figured out how to use my new scanner/printer/copier/changing table.

Another reason to buy sketches from Shannon (SL) Gallant at cons
My 3rd original Shadow drawing is this sweet piece. I now have a collection. Coming soon - Roger Langridge's SPX drawing.

Lamont Cranston painting by Thomas Boatwright
Mr. Boatwright just put a note in the comments section of the Jim Amash's Shadow sketch post with a link to his painting of Lamont Cranston that I was lucky enough to buy at Heroes Con. It's a nice one isn't it? Spooky eyes though. Here's another painting he's done on the topic - I think I may buy a photoprint of that one after the Heroes Con bills fade.
This will join the Amash sketch, a Bill Sienkewicz poster and a Mike Kaluta cover to American Spectator magazine on my office walls.

Shadow sketch from Heroes Con
Jim Amash did this sketch for me after seeing a painting of Lamont Cranston by Thomas Boatwright that I was carrying around. It turns out that we're both pulp hero fans. As Alex Toth said about doing a drawing of the Shadow for Jim "it had to be in the style of Ed Cartier" and so is this one.

Heroes Con 2010 pictures
Evan Dorkin's perhaps ashamed to be caught buying a mainstream comic strip book from Richard Thompson.
After talking about the Thomas Boatwright painting of Lamont Cranston I bought, Jim Amash drew this Shadow sketch for me.
Richard Thompson is a fan of Kate Beaton.
Raina Telgemeier and her fine Smile.
And then there's Dazzler.
