More cartoons on view at Library of Congress

Continuing our recent survey of the Library of Congress' cartoons on exhibit - the Civil War in America show has at least three cartoons in it. Although they appear to our eyes as political cartoons, these were published as stand-alone prints that one would buy to admire and look at frequently - almost the television of their day. Go see them in person to get a better view than these pictures taken without a flash.







In the Words Like Sapphires: 100 Years of Hebraica at the Library of Congress, 1912–2012 exhibit, there's two original paintings by Arthur Szyk for playing cards.

Arthur Szyk in Library of Congress

Jewish cartoonist and caricaturist is a perennial favorite in the area. The Library of Congress displaying a couple of pieces of his original art for playing cards in the "Words Like Sapphires" Hebraicia exhibit, and is selling some new products based on his work - a book "Heroes of Ancient Israel: The Playing Card Art of Arthur Szyk" and two decks of the cards, a 'Player's Deck' and a 'Collector's Deck.'  I love Szyk's work and bought one of each.

One of Szyk's prints of the Declaration of Independence is on permanent display at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Museum, I discovered yesterday.

As you may know, Szyk – a veteran of World War I – was an active member of the JWV in the United States. He created several beautiful works of art exclusively for the JWV's use, works that will be highlighted in Irvin's exciting presentation.

Arthur Szyk in NY Times

Szyk was a Jewish cartoonist who fled to New York and did some awesomely hard-hitting propaganda during World War II. He was the subject of a couple of great exhibits in DC about five years ago too. This article discusses a new exhibit of his work in Germany -
