Pop Culture Happy Hour on 'Long Story Short'

Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "DC Flag Remix: #IntifadaDC"

"DC Flag Remix: #IntifadaDC"
https://sinkers.org/stage/?p=4176

A parody of the Washington DC flag with sandwiches in place of the
stripes, in honor of a guy who threw a sub at a CPB agent downtown a few
weeks ago, has gone viral and a huge hit with folks in neighborhoods
like Capitol Hill. All I could think of, though, was just how toothless
and ineffectual my fellow Washingtonians have apparently been in the
face of a hostile military occupation; basically, the only response we
can muster is to throw sandwiches. No general strikes, student walkouts
being proposed or organized anywhere around here? Any disobedience –
civil or otherwise – being called around town? Any organizations forming
anywhere around here working on plans to make this city ungovernable?
Anything at all beyond throwing sandwiches, creating celebratory t-shirt
art and posting stupid jokes about it on Facebook? Nope, not seeing
anything.

Well, what the hell, then; while I wait for someone to drop an action
call who isn't a freshly minted Democratic Party front – like the "Free
DC Project" or those "No Kings" dipshits – here's something which might
be at least a cut or two more provocative than tossing a foot-long for
all my "flypasters" out there.

Cartoons, Capitalism & Censorship: Alison Bechdel & Ann Telnaes on Politics in Art

How do artists hold the powerful to account? Graphic novelist Alison Bechdel and editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes have been grappling with that question for decades, in their own very different ways.  Bechdel is the creator of the seminal comic strip, "Dykes to Watch out For," which she self-syndicated for 25 years. She's also the author and illustrator of four graphic novels, including "Fun Home," which was adapted into a five-time Tony-winning Broadway musical. She is a professor at Yale, and her latest book is Spent.   Telnaes is a two-time Pulitzer winner and the winner of the Herb Block Prize for editorial cartooning in 2023. Earlier this year, she made international headlines after resigning from The Washington Post when her cartoon mocking tech billionaires for bending the knee to President Trump, including Post owner Jezz Bezos, was spiked. She now publishes her work on Substack  Kara, Alison and Ann discuss everything from politics and money in art, to South Park, book bans, drawing Kristi Noem's flowing extensions, art making, and AI drawings.  Questions? Jan 15: Paul Karasik's course at Politics and Prose

New York Trilogy: From Novel to Graphic Novel

with Paul Karasik

and here's the info.

ONLINE CLASS: Paul Auster's New York Trilogy: An Adaptation from Novel to Graphic Novel (2600)

paul auster class icon

One Thursday: January 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET Online

Price:

$50 per person (10% off for members)

Lecture and Discussion. This online class will be streamed live and recorded for later viewing.

The late Paul Auster's New York Trilogy is among his most beloved masterworks. Now all three tales have been adapted into graphic novels in a single volume by two-time Eisner Award winner and New Yorker cartoonist, Paul Karasik, with the aid of David Mazzucchelli ("Asterios Polyp") and Lorenzo Mattotti (New Yorker cover artist).

Join Karasik for an in-depth look into this unusual detective novel triptych, exploring themes of identity, language, and the nature of reality. Along with our discussion of the novel, we will also delve into the nature of graphic novel adaptation—how it works, what parameters are put in place, the working relationship between author and illustrator.

Although not required, participation in this class would be deeply enhanced by reading either or both Auster's original prose, New York Trilogy, as well as the graphic novel adaptation.

One Thursday: January 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET Online

Required Reading:

Paul Auster's New York Trilogy graphic novel (9780553387643)

Recommended Reading:

New York Trilogy by Paul Auster (9780143039839)

About the Instructor:

Two-time Eisner Award winner, Paul Karasik, began his career as the Associate Editor of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly's RAW magazine. He has subsequently worked on scholarly books about comics ("How To Read Nancy" with Mark Newgarden), co-written an award-winning comics memoir ("The Ride Together" with Judy Karasik), and edited comics collections ("The Complete Fletcher Hanks").

REFUND POLICY: Please note that we can issue class refunds up until seven (7) days before the first class session.

Avery Hill Publishing

It's Lyndsay Grockle's first day as the manager of the Lakeview Hotel. Her boss has handed her the keys and departed for vacation. And then the convention attendees start showing up, each more peculiar than the last.

Lyndsay's a confirmed skeptic―so she's surprised to be woken up in the middle of the night by her convention attendees, telling her that there's been a murder . . . of the Loch Ness Monster.
