OT: Mike Keefe of the Denver Post

I got to talk to Mike Keefe at the recent Cartoonists and Cocktails and really enjoyed it. Plus I won a piece of art he donated too.  So here's a story on him:

Truitt on Green Lantern animation

Unlike most reviewers, I was completely unimpressed with this show tonight. The animation looked stiff and video-gamey, and the basic plot is lifted from Star Trek: Voyager - Green Lantern's Hal Jordan and Kilowog are on the far side of the galaxy in a ship filled with refugees while hunted by the Borg ... make that the Red Lanterns rather. I won't bother looking for this when it returns in 2012.

PR: Mort Walker pens Beetle Bailey Vets Day Comic to Support Nat'l Army Museum

Famed cartoonist Mort Walker, creator of the Beetle Bailey comic strip for over 60 years, has penned a special Beetle Bailey comic strip in support of the National Army Museum.  In the strip, published internationally in over 1,800 newspapers on Veterans Day this Friday, Beetle can be found imagining himself immortalized in The National Museum of the United States Army in his favorite post – his bed.

Mr. Walker, a long time supporter of the military, has extended his support to The National Museum of the United States Army for the third time this year by using the Beetle Bailey comic strips to help promote the Museum.  Scheduled to open in Fort Belvoir, Va., outside Washington, DC, in 2015, the museum will honor America's Soldiers, preserve the history of America's oldest military branch, and educate all Americans about the Army's role in our nation's development. The U.S. Army is the only service without its own museum.

Mort Walker, one of the longest-drawing cartoonists in history, served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II, and was discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1947. In portraying the lighter side of military life for more than 60 years, Mort Walker's support of the military has earned him the praise of the highest ranking officials. He was given the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service by the United States Army, the highest award the Secretary of the Army can present a civilian.  During his distinguished career as a cartoonist, he has earned numerous awards including induction into the Museum of Cartoon Art Hall of Fame.

Mort Walker's Beetle Bailey comic strip about the National Army Museum can be found in syndicated papers nationwide on Friday, and online here.

Trickster won Aesop Award last month

Here's a couple of pullquotes from the Aesop Award page

"The Aesop Prize and Aesop Accolades are conferred annually by the Children's Folklore Section of the American Folklore Society upon English language books for children and young adults, both fiction and nonfiction."

"Yet credit is given where credit is due: each tale has an author and an artist. Both work together to create a book that has the power to speak without words, that can be read aloud and still have the power of the storytelling event, and together make a powerful and compelling resource for cultural heritage and cross-cultural understanding."
