Herblock Prize to be awarded tonight

in a private event at the Library of Congress.

Silver Tiffany TrophyTo commemorate Herb Block's legacy, the Foundation awards the annual Herblock Prize for excellence in editorial cartooning. The Foundation created the Herblock Prize in 2004 to encourage editorial cartooning as an essential tool for preserving the rights of the American people through freedom of speech and the right of expression. Presented each spring at the Library of Congress, the prize is awarded by The Herb Block Foundation for distinguished examples of editorial cartooning that exemplify the courageous standard set by Herblock and is judged by a panel of outside experts.

Although the judges for the Herblock Prize always had a finalist chosen for the award, the finalist was not announced until the year 2011. The finalist in 2011 was Ann Telnaes of The Washington Post for her portfolio of animated editorial cartoons. In 2012, The Herb Block Foundation announced that past, present, and future finalists of the Herblock Prize would receive a $5,000 after-tax award.

The winner receives a tax free $15,000 cash prize as well as a sterling silver Tiffany trophy.

As of May 2022, the Herblock Prize winner will now receive a tax free $20,000 cash award and the finalist will receive tax free $7,500 cash award.

Winners and finalists include:

1886 Grant Hamilton cartoon - The Economy of the Spigot and the Bung Hole

Here's a piece I rescued at a flea market this weekend. Grant Hamilton, "The Economy of the Spigot and the Bung Hole," Judge Magazine August 21, 1886.

It deals with the refusal by President Grover Cleveland to increase the pensions of Civil War widows through private bills (i.e. each person had her own bill in Congress) while pouring money into infrastructure products for harbors. IIRC, the government was largely funded via customs revenue and land sales, so harbor improvements make sense. The White House has a page on him.

Posted in memory of comics historian John Adcock and his Yesterday's Papers blog where a piece like this would usually have appeared.

An illustrated guide to pigs around the world

By
March 10, 2024  (in print on June 2 2024): F6.

From farmlands to rainforests to tropical islands, hogs of all kinds exist all over the globe. Illustrator Cat Willett has made a list of some of the most fascinating pigs, including the tiniest and the hairiest, to celebrate our hoofed friends.

D.C.'s pool season is upon us. Here's what we overheard opening weekend. [in print as What we overheard opening weekend for D.C.'s pools].

Memorial Day may be the unofficial start of summer, but it's the official start of swimming season in D.C. Nearly 22 outdoor pools reopened over the holiday weekend to dozens of residents and near-perfect weather. We headed to Banneker Pool, one of the city's most popular swimming holes, to soak up the vibes and eavesdrop on our neighbors.

Outdoor pools are open every Saturday and Sunday until June 24, when they will begin operating six days a week (schedules vary).
