These politicians denied democracy on Jan. 6. Now, they want your vote.

topper

OpinionThese politicians denied democracy on Jan. 6. Now, they want your vote.

Steve Brodner is a satirical illustrator and commentator.

While the violent mob swarmed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, aiming to subvert democracy and keep President Donald Trump in power, another group was already working on the same project inside. In an unsuccessful bid to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election, 147 Republicans formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden's electoral votes.

Some have already left office. But as many as 117 of these members of Congress are running for reelection in 2024. Here they are, drawn together: a collection of American politicians engaged in using democracy to attain the power to subvert it.

This is a graphic of the politicians running in Northeastern states. Two are highlighted. Elise Stefanik (NY): Now in the No. 4 role in the House GOP, Stefanik was a strong defender of Trump's election conspiracy theories. Scott Perry (PA): Perry helped organize the effort to use the Justice Department to delegitimize the election results.

Stuart McIntire of Maryland Funnybook Fandom has passed away

Stuart McIntire, owner of the Facebook group, "Maryland Funnybook Fandom" has passed away. Stu was a font of knowledge about area cartoonists, and his passing will be a big loss to the community. His wife Amy has posted a note on his personal FB page that he died in hospice of stomach cancer.

I didn't know Stu well enough to write anything more personal, or even professional, but I hope to get someone who did write a formal obituary for ComicsDC. Stu wrote a few articles and comments for us here at ComicsDC.

With permission of his family, here's the note from his Facebook page:

We are heartbroken to share the news that Stuart McIntire died of stomach cancer on January 6, though we are grateful that he was comfortable at home and surrounded by most of his favorite people. He was only 65 years old.

Stu and his beloved wife Amy were inseparable since their first date over 45 years ago. He was the biggest fan of his three children and their partners: Katie & Vann Crucillo, Sarah & Joe Garifo, and Kevin McIntire. He got immense joy from being Papa to his five grandchildren: Molly, Steven, Asher, Logan, and Phoebe.

Stu loved sharing his love of Halloween, his comics collection, Universal classic monsters, the AFI Top 100, 20th-century American politics and ephemera, and making (and of course, eating) damn good barbecue. He was a gentle man: sentimental, nostalgic, playful, intelligent, creative, curious, kind, and brave.

Stu wants all of his family and friends to know that he loves you very much and you all touched his life in meaningful ways. He really enjoyed keeping up with all of you over the years.

The details of his memorial service are forthcoming. In the meantime, please give your dad a big hug and consider making a donation in Stuart’s honor to No Stomach for Cancer (nostomachforcancer.org) or the National MS Society (nationalmssociety.org).

That darn Mutts and Speed Bump

The tragedy of dogs treated like dogs [Mutts letter]

Janet Halpin, Glenwood, Ill.

Washington Post January 6 2024: A15.

I followed with deep interest the Guard Dog storyline in Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" comic strip. Guard Dog was abandoned by his people and was discovered freezing, hungry and thirsty by Mooch, Earl and Doozy. In the Dec. 16 strip, Guard Dog, who has been adopted by Doozy and renamed Sparky, is at Doozy's house, inside, looking at his dog bed and wagging his tail.

That is a happy ending, but readers should know that the reality might be somewhat different. I adopted two dogs, littermates, who had been languishing in a no-kill shelter down south for four years until rescued by Paws Illinois. For months, they were scared to death, cowering on their bed. With expert help, we woke up their brains with scents, soft voices and consistent care. They both take serious anti-anxiety meds, probably for life.

I thought one, Half Moon, was mute. One day after about two years, I heard a quiet, almost whispered "woof woof" from her room. The woofs gradually got louder, and finally she started to bark a bit. She still prefers to have snacks placed on the floor rather than from my hand. After almost three years, she still will not walk by herself from their room through the house to the door. I place a ribbon loosely around her neck and hold the end while we walk. They have been brave and courageous, champion dogs, and I tell them so every day.

I imagine that in real life Doozy and her mom would have similar challenges with Guard Dog/Sparky. Caring for doggos who had terrible beginnings is extremely rewarding, but it requires much time, training and consistency.

Who do we think we're kidding? [Speed Bump letter]

Arthur F. Manfredi Jr., Sterling

Washington Post January 6 2024: A15.

The Dec. 24 "Speed Bump" comic strip was terribly offensive and sacrilegious. I think that any Christian — probably anyone, Christian, non-Christian, agnostic or atheist — would agree that the cartoon at a minimum was in very poor taste.

For the cartoonist to submit it and for The Post to publish it on Christmas Eve showed a serious lapse in sensitivity by both parties. How could anyone refer to the newborn Jesus Christ as "the kid"?
