This is in addition to the previously announced international guests, Frederik Peeters, Dylan Horrocks and Brecht Vandenbroucke, as well as Kate Beaton, Luke Pearson, Noelle Stevenson, Michael DeForge, Gemma Correll, Noah Van Sciver, Matt Bors, Lilli Carré, Theo Ellsworth, C. Spike Trotman, Jennifer Hayden, Stuart Immonen, Scott McCloud, Bill Griffith, Kathryn Immonen, Derf, Jessica Abel (Sat. Only) and Ted Rall.   All three of these renowned international creators will be making their very first appearance at SPX.   SPX 2015 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, and will have over 650 creators, 280 exhibitor tables and 22 programming slots to entertain, enlighten and introduce attendees to the amazing world of independent and small press comics.   Bendik Kaltenborn is an illustrator for the New Yorker and New York Times; a cofounder of the Dongery zine collective; and a cartoonist. Kaltenborn has exhibited in Norway, Italy, Serbia, Taiwan, Sweden, Japan, and the United Kingdom. His SPX 2015 debut book is also his first English-language graphic novel: Adult Contemporary is a collection of odd imaginings, surrealist comics, and physical comedy gags. Kaltenborn's comics reveal a vibrantly colorful planet populated by lumpy, big-nosed people totally absorbed in their own off-kilter personal dramas. He has published two collections of comics in Norway, which have been translated to French, Spanish, German, and Swedish. Kaltenborn lives in Oslo, Norway.   Formerly a painter, sculptor and art teacher, Anna Ehrlemark found her calling in sequential arts, a form that seemed to naturally evolve out of the narrative component in her sculpture installation work. Her comics have appeared in a number of local and international publications: Black (Italy), Stripburger (Slovenia), Zone 5300 (Netherlands),  ArtReview (UK), Asiatroma/Le Dernier Cri (France), Broken Pencil, Exile, Taddle Creek (Canada), Mineshaft (USA) and The Best American Comics (USA). Her debut collection of comics titled Heartless came out in September 2012 with the Nova Scotia-based publisher Conundrum Press, and was translated and published in France in 2013 by Ici-même Editions. Winners, published by Floating World Comics, is her first graphic novel in the United States and will see its debut at SPX 2015. Ehrlemark lives in Gothenburg, Sweden.   Joan Cornellà is a Spanish cartoonist and illustrator, famous for his surreal, unsettling comic strips. Full of awkward moments and visual gags, Cornellà's comics employ an uncomfortably playful tone that has garnered him over one million facebook fans. He has the gruesome, ironic comic strip down to a fine art, creating complex and hilarious narratives expressed in no more than six panels. His illustrations have been appeared in numerous Spanish publications as well as The New York Times, and in 2009 he published the award-winning graphic album, Abulio. SPX 2015 see's the debut of Mox Nox, a collection of his comics from Fantagraphics Books.   Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit that brings together more than 650 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators. The expo includes a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year's guests.   The Ignatz Award is a festival prize held every year at SPX recognizing outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning, with the winners chosen by attendees at the show. WASHINGTON, DC – Art Whino announces the opening of the new Art Whino Gallery at SW, with Vivid Visions: The Art of Kim Jung Gi, the first United States solo exhibition of the Korean illustrator, cartoonist, and animator. Art Whino Gallery is the premier presenter of this major artist's work in the United States. The new gallery will open within the Blind Whino Arts Club and event space at 700 Delaware Ave. SW, Washington, DC.

 

Kim Jung Gi (KJG) is an established artist from South Korea, whose stunning work has attracted the international attention of millions of fans over recent years. He has the keen ability to visualize his drawings before making any marks, relying on mental images only, using no sketches, nor references to photographs when drawing. Gi illustrates what he sees, working from an absolute photographic memory, creating astounding perspective in his large-scale images, often with a "fish-eye" view. Using ballpoint or black felt pens as his tools of choice, he challenges himself to 'speed sketch' images and scenes as quickly as possible, making for mesmerizing time-lapse videos of his drawing process.

 

"Kim Jung Gi is simply fascinating to watch, and he's working in a way that no other contemporary illustration-based artist is doing these days," describes Shane Pomajambo, Art Whino gallery founder and curator. "When I had the opportunity to showcase his work in DC, I knew I wanted to make it significant. I'm excited to open a new space in Southwest with such amazing work."

 

Gi's central themes include a mix of reality and fantasy. He depicts soldiers, battles, warriors, samurais, hackers and snipers. He references video game culture, spy games, historical and contemporary events, battles, war, insurrection, political unrest and the shock of the future. Women play an important recurring role in his work, and are often depicted as fighters, militants, protesters and leaders that are strong and powerful, beautiful, sometimes sexy and always evocative. Often this is in contrast to the testosterone-heavy narratives or scenes he portrays in both urban and rural settings.

 

"I observe things all the time. I don't take references while I'm drawing, but I'm always collecting visual resources. I observe them carefully on daily basis, almost habitually. I study images of all sorts and genres," Gi describes.

The artist will create a hand drawn / illustrated wall mural on site, measuring approximately 36"h x 120"w, comprised of three different panels inspired by Star Wars. Art Whino will produce limited edition prints of each of the panels and will make them available for purchase soon after the exhibition opening.

 

During the reception Gi will sign and personalize copies of his different sketchbooks, containing hundreds of pages of drawings. Additional signed copies of his books will be available through the run of the exhibition. Previously purchased books may be signed for $50 during the opening reception only.

 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kim Jung Gi (40) is from Goyang-Si in the province of Kyongki-Do, South Korea. With a passion for art and drawing from an early age, Gi entered Dong-Eui University in Busan when he was 19, and majored in Art & Design, with an emphasis on technical ability. Gi then served his civic duty in the Korean army Special Forces for more than two years. During his service, he memorized an amazing number of vehicles, weapons and other military objects to include in his work.

 

Funny Funny, KJG's first publication, appeared in the 'manwha' (comic book) Young Jump. Then came several short stories and a series of different exhibitions, prior to adding teaching manwha at universities and private schools to his repertoire.

 

In 2007, KJG gathered nearly 3,000 pages of his sketches and published them in three different Sketchbooks. He also published Spy Games in 2014, in collaboration with French writer Jean-David Morvan (Glénat Editions). In June 2015, a new museum in Penang, Malay, had an exhibition of his work, including his attempt at the Guinness Book of World Records for the "Longest drawing by an individual in Fisheye Art" hand drawn illustration.

 

When Gi is not working in advertising or managing AniChanga, his drawing school in Seoul, he's traveling the world to meet his fans, often appearing at Comic-Con events and pop-up demonstrations of his work, seeking more inspiration and ideas along the way. Compleating Cul de Sac raises $220 for Team Cul de Sac

After deducting the initial production expenses for 3 proof drafts, and the cost of an ad in Magic Bullet #11, the publication of Compleating Cul de Sac has raised $220 for the 2nd quarter of 2015 for Parkinson's research.

The Complete Cul de Sac isn't.

Complete, that is. Compiling it while ill, Richard accidentally left out some strips. Others were purposely left out, either because he had redrawn them for syndication, or they were too tied to the Washington, D.C. origins of the strip to make sense for a worldwide audience, or he "just felt some were not funny." Over 100 are not in The Complete CDS.

But if you're a cartoon completist, or just want a little bit more CDS, we understand and we're here for you. We've collected the lost water-colored Washington Post Magazine strips, the early inchoate musings about what the strip should be, the promotional material, the sketches for fans, and finally some fugitive Team Cul de Sac charity art by Art Spiegelman, KAL, Patrick McDonnell, Eric Shansby, Nate Beeler and others.

With Richard's blessing, or at least active acquiescence, any money the book makes will go to Team Cul de Sac to fight Parkinson's disease.

And if more art surfaces, we'll do a second edition.

Horrocks began his diverse career with the publication of Pickle, which ran from 1993-97 published by Black Eye Press. Pickle included the serialization of Hicksville, a groundbreaking story that was collected into a graphic novel that won plaudits from reviewers around the globe. Horrocks has had international success in alternative and mainstream comics with books like Atlas from Drawn & Quarterly, and as writer for DC Comics and Vertigo. In 2014, Fantagraphics published Sam Zabel and his Magic Pen to wide critical and fan acclaim. Horrocks is an Eisner Award winner and in 2006 he was appointed University of Auckland/Creative New Zealand Literary Fellow. Horrocks currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand with his wife and sons.   Brecht Vandenbroucke is a Belgian cartoonist and illustrator. His debut graphic novel, White Cube, took the Angouleme International Comics Festival by storm in 2013. Vandenbroucke's distinctive painted panels and brightly colored spreads intermingle pop culture influences and commentary on the fine art world, offering an absurdist view of the institutions of that world. White Cube has been published in Belgium, Finland, Norway, Spain, Germany, France, and in English by Drawn & Quarterly. Since graduating from art school a few years ago, he has worked for numerous periodicals, including the New York Times, and has participated in group shows all over the world. The Ignatz, named after George Herriman's brick-wielding mouse from his long running comic strip Krazy Kat, recognizes exceptional work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an art form and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz Awards are a festival prize, the first of such in the United States comic book industry. The nominees for the ballot were determined by a panel of five of the best of today's comic artists, Lamar Abrams, Cara Bean, Robyn Chapman, Sophie Goldstein and Corrine Mucha, with the votes cast for the awards by the attendees during SPX. Sink/Swim Comic Creator Expo: Oct. 17

Sink/Swim Press holds its second annual Comic Creator Expo Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Va. “Check out everything that RVA's best creators are working on, enjoy good music, cold beers, and great art. The expo is FREE and open to the public. We'll post a list of creators in a couple weeks,” according to its Facebook event page.
