Aug 17: Darick Robertson in Annapolis

As reported on Convention Scene:

Artist Darick Robertson signs at Third Eye Comics on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 11:00am until 1:00pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Third Eye Faithful, we are totally excited to announce one of our biggest signings of the Summer with the arrival of Darick Robertson to Third Eye Comics this August! Darick is the legendary modern comics artist behind instant classics like TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE BOYS, and HAPPY! He's done a ton of other excellent work as well, in fact, we'd be here all day if we ran through the list. Let me just say this: we're honored to have the man as a guest at our store this Summer in anticipation of his brand new creator-owned series, BALLISTIC, from BLACK MASK STUDIOS, the publishers of the recent 12 REASONS TO DIE comic.

What's Darick's new project, BALLISTIC, all about? Imagine the cult movie genius of REPO MAN (the '80s one!) distilled into a modern day heist story. A madcap sci-fi buddy adventure about a wanna-be bank robber and his best friend Gun, a drug-addicted, foul-mouthed, living gun, marks Darick Robertson's return to the hard sci-fi worldbuilding of his classic TRANSMETROPOLITAN mixed with THE BOYS' ultra-violence.

Darick will be signing at Third Eye Annapolis from 11AM-1PM on Saturday 8/17. We'll have plenty of copies of all his works available, including his new series, BALLISTIC!

J. Coleman, a Washington, D.C., painter, sculptor and muralist, is having a solo show at The Dunes, with an opening reception on Aug. 2 from 7-10 p.m.  Here's a description of his show, "The White Hush": "The works depict the heroic archetype male figures and female figures suggesting fertility goddess. Institute for the Arts summer program

Last week I visited with students in grades 7-12 in the cartooning program at the Institute for the Arts, a summer program in Fairfax, Va. We had a great conversation about the comics-making process (from thumbnailings to printing), getting published and working shows and events to get your name out there. I also showed them some of the original art from District Comics and Magic Bullet.

Aug 19-23: Comics class for children at Politics and Prose bookstore

Comics Jam & Scribbler's Cabal

Date: August 19 - 23, 10 a.m. to noon

Price: $120/110 members

classComics Jam & Scribbler's Cabal is a read-aloud session and drawing free-for-all for ages 8 and up. Like a book club for comic fans, but more heavy on the fun than on the analysis. Kids can bring in their own drawings to share. It's less of a How to Draw class than a Why to Draw and How to Keep Enjoying it class. We'll read comics, draw comics, discuss each other's work, make up our own characters, draw each other's characters, and have a blast.

Bring pencils or pens, paper, and a love of either comics or drawing—or both!

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
A graduate of the drama program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Dave Burbank has worked for the Takoma Park Maryland Library for over 15 years. An illustrator and comics enthusiast, he is the curator of the library's remarkable graphic novel collection (over 30 titles) having built it from scratch and read every panel. He teaches a yearly seminar on the History and Importance of Comics to students of the University of Maryland's graduate College of Library and Information Sciences; to Montgomery County Public School media specialists at their In-Service Learning Day; and to various area schools. He has appeared on a panel discussion on "Graphic Novels in Libraries" at the independent comics' premier convention The Small Press Expo (SPX 2011).

As an illustrator and writer he is the creator of the Takoma Park Library's SummerQuest interactive reading game, as well as stacks and stacks of pads full of half-finished comics and fascinating doodles. He keeps an occasional blog on issues relating to comics in libraries at comixtakoma.wordpress.com. A father of three, he lives in suburban Maryland.
