Carla Speed McNeil's Letter To Everybody: and a thank you

Next week's trio of pages is the end of the beginning of SETTLERS OF THE STORM WORLDS. I will need a little time to get things shaken out, script-wise, for the next part. I think I have enough ideas and a solid outline, but, yanno, once you have all your classes and your materials and your books and have decided not to chloroform your new roommate, you still have to... GO TO CLASS. Ughh. Writing first drafts is the hard part for me.

Yeah, that's right: crosshatching for a solid week isn't the hard part. The hard part is writing.

Second drafts and rearranging and embroidering, that's easy. First drafts, that's like being a kiwi laying its egg, and if you haven't googled that, google it.

I can take a break and do the first part of any of the other stories I've promised you. But they all constitute first drafts too. I don't know what my brain will tantrum out first, but I will show it to you here first.

Thank you all for being here, and for checking out what I'm laying down. I would not be doing it without your support. I took my time and fixed a few things. I had originally imagined binging the inks and getting it all done in time for SPX back in September; this would have required a radically different approach and would have been a penitential grind. I'm glad I didn't stick to that.

Next week I'm gonna revamp my tiers. It's been a long time coming. I hope you'll all stick around, though, of course, I understand if you don't. The webcomics will remain free to read.

THAT SAID: Going forward, all those who are able to throw me a little $ will have my everlasting gratitude but will also get new pages a week early. If I had a bomb-jillion people giving me a couple bucks a month I'd be so happy. I hope nobody feels like they don't "do enough" if they are couple-buck members. Love to all.

$5 and upwards will all get a pretty pretty PDF, which isn't ready yet-- the ink on pages 37-39 is barely dry. I'm reworking the cover. All rewards stack, so as you go up, it's the house that Jack built, you add to your goodies.

$10 and up get everything plus they'll get freebies of my collections; lectures, notes, process, illustration sets, what-have-you.

I'm still digging away at the whole shop thing, to sell original art and comics. But if you're at $15 or more, I will gladly ship a physical copy of the SETTLERS comic to you, wherever you are. You also get all the other treets, natch, but make sure the address in your Patron ID is correct. When I'm ready to ship, I'll send a reminder.

$20 and $25: I do say I love it just fine when people support me with just a couple bucks, but deep-pocketed folks, would you like to take some art off my hands? $20 and $25 get all the other goodies, but at $20 you can have a free drawing once a year, something already made, like a story page (I'll make lists of what's available) or the type of illustration I have in the LAUGHTER AT THE ACADEMY collection. And at $25 a year (sic actually MONTH), you get all the goodies, but instead of a drawing already made, you have the option of getting a commission. Both these ree-wards will take a little discussion on an individual basis.

A wee recap of how the tiers will change:

$1+ members: early access and true gratitude

$5+ members: PDF of SETTLERS part 1, 39 story pages AND early access, of course

$10+ members: Freebies of collections, SETTLERS PDF, early access

$15+ members: Physical copy of the signed and numbered limited edition SETTLERS comic, shipped to you anywhere, Collections freebies, SETTLERS PDF, early access

$20+ members: Free drawing, existing art, shipped to you, SETTLERS signed and numbered comic shipped to you anywhere, Collections freebies, SETTLERS PDF, early access

$25+ members: Free commission drawn and shipped to you, SETTLERS signed and numbered comic shipped to you, Collections freebies, SETTLERS PDF, early access.

Thanks to you all. It's not an exaggeration to say you are life-savers. Patreon may not be perfect, but I'd have been done a long time ago without it.

Sincerely,

Carla Speed McNeil

Who's Who in the Zoo? by Daniel Boris

Louise Penny collects Harry Bliss original cartoons, and displays them in her tunnel

Louise Penny gives us a tour of her book collection. Her dogs come, too.

At the bestselling mystery writer's Canadian home, exploring her joyfully unorganized shelves and her custom underground passageway.

Washington Post November 16 2025: C1, 6

"We left the main house through a door near the kitchen, went down a few steps and entered a tunnel. It seemed fitting that a mystery writer would have an underground passage — a good place to hide things, like a book — but Penny built this for a purely pragmatic reason: so she and her dogs could make their way to her winter writing studio, a few hundred feet away, without getting too cold.

Muggins stayed behind while Charlie led the way through the 60-foot corridor, patiently waiting as we stopped to admire the framed posters on the plywood walls — several New Yorker cartoons (Penny is a fan of Harry Bliss) and a display of the covers of Penny's books."

A word from Composer Hiroyuki SAWANO (Seasons 1, 2, 3 and The Final Season):

"I am thrilled that it has been decided that we will be holding "Attack on Titan" concerts overseas. The music of "Attack on Titan" has become a very important part of my musical career, and I am feeling fortunate that people all over the world are going to be able to enjoy my music through the series. The anime has come to an end, but I believe that this concert is a great opportunity to reunite the fans with the anime once more, and I think it will be a kind of a unique stage that could only happen with an overseas performance. I hope everyone can fully enjoy this opportunity."

Hiroyuki SAWANO is one of the most in-demand composers for anime, movies, and TV series in Japan. His main works include some of the most famous anime soundtracks, such as Fate/strange Fake, "Attack on Titan", Mobile Suit Gundam UC, Kill la Kill, Guilty Crown, Blue Exorcist, Aldnoah.Zero, and The Seven Deadly Sins. In addition to creating music with his project SawanoHiroyuki[nZk], which focuses on vocal music, SAWANO also composes and arranges music for featured artists and is the producer of SennaRin and NAQT VANE. Learn more at SAWANO's official website: www.sawanohiroyuki.com.

A word from Composer KOHTA YAMAMOTO (The Final Season):

"Finally, the "Attack on Titan" concert will be held in countries outside of Japan. I'm truly excited and thrilled that, for the first time, we can deliver it to many "Attack on Titan" fans worldwide! This opportunity was made possible thanks to all of the "Attack on Titan" fans around the world. Thank you so much! Although Hiroyuki SAWANO and I cannot join this tour, the concert has been supervised by us, including the set list. The music from "Attack on Titan" will be performed as it was in Japan, so please look forward to it! I hope that many people will be able to experience and enjoy the music of "Attack on Titan" live!"

KOHTA YAMAMOTO started working as a composer and arranger in 2015, in addition to producing music for video works, such as anime, dramas, and commercials. He is active in a wide range of activities, including composing and arranging music for featured artists. His main works include the soundtrack of "Attack on Titan": The Final Season, Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga/Shimane Illuminati Saga, The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse, and Kingdom (3rd, 4th, and 5th series); songs for the Fate/Grand Order, THE IDOLM@STER, and PreCure series; and artists such as MUCC, Sakura Gakuin, Sayaka Sasaki, and Mai Fuchigami.

A word from Anime Producer Tetsuya Kinoshita:

"In Japan, we held a special live event at the end of each season, and we asked Hiroyuki SAWANO and, from the final season, KOHTA YAMAMOTO to perform the soundtrack for the show. This was very well received, so we have been trying to make overseas concerts a reality for many years. More than 10 years have passed since the anime was broadcast, and we are overjoyed to be able to hold the official anime concert in world-famous halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House, the Palais des Congrès in Paris, and Wembley Arena in London. This concert will be supervised by the original composers, Hiroyuki SAWANO and KOHTA YAMAMOTO, and will be a program that will allow you to enjoy the world of "Attack on Titan" to the fullest, using anime footage and original materials. Specially designed concert goods will also be created, so do not miss this rare opportunity to relive the "Attack on Titan" experience through music!"

 About "Attack on Titan"

"Attack on Titan" is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. Since its debut in 2009, it has become a global phenomenon, renowned for its complex storytelling and emotional depth. The anime adaptation, with its thrilling soundtrack by Hiroyuki SAWANO and KOHTA YAMAMOTO, has captivated millions worldwide.

The story takes place in a world where, a century ago, grotesque giants known as Titans appeared and consumed all but the last remnants of humanity. The survivors took refuge behind giant walls. Today, the threat of the Titans is a distant memory, and a boy named Eren Yeager yearns to explore the world beyond his current circumstances. What began as a childish dream, though, will become an all-too-real nightmare when the Titans return and humanity is once again on the brink of extinction.

"Attack on Titan" has become one of the best-selling manga series of all time (140 million copies sold worldwide). The manga series was published in Bessatsu Shonen magazine by Kodansha, winning numerous awards across Japan and the US, including the Kodansha Manga Award and the Harvey Award. There have been many "Attack on Titan" adaptations, including the wildly popular anime television series, video games, novels, and more. The TV series began in 2013 and concluded in 2023. It is still one of the most watched anime series of all time, and it is still available on Netflix and Crunchyroll, among many other platforms. It has received much recognition, especially at the Crunchyroll Awards, where it was a 2024 Anime Awards Nominee, 2023 Anime Awards Nominee, 2023 Anime Awards Winner, 2022 Anime Awards Winner, 2020 Anime Awards Winner, and 2019 Anime Awards Winner. A movie compiling the latest episodes is set to be released on November 8, 2024.

PR: Local DC Creative Ad Agency This January Launches “NOOK,” New Artist Residency Program

Local DC Creative Ad Agency This January Launches "NOOK," New Artist Residency Program
The selected DC-area artist to be given a $5,000 stipend, workspace access, mentorship from across DC arts ecosystem, visibility through agency's platforms and more

Washington D.C.-based independent creative agency This January is launching its first-ever artist residency program called NOOK, which will invest in one DC-area artist at a time, offering funding, mentorship, and community. The eight-week program will allow individual artists to develop new work and meet mentors across the DC arts ecosystem, and at the end of the program, each artist will have the opportunity to give a public artist talk at This January's Logan Circle studio, and have created install-ready work that will join the agency's collection. The program name "NOOK" was inspired by the artists' dedicated workspace, which will be within a cozy corner, or nook, of the agency's office.

"Zach and I are so excited to launch NOOK, something we've been working on and have been wanting to do for a long time," said Maggie Winters, Co-Founder and CCO of This January. "We're extremely proud to be part of the DC creative community, and are always on the hunt to find new ways to create new opportunities for this community, find new people to be part of it, and uplift artists who have great ideas, but may just need that extra push to help them realize their potential. We hope NOOK can be another way we can help invest in that talent, and ultimately, we want to continue to find ways to give back and invest in the community that's been so wonderful to us. And NOOK, overall, is yet another way we want to show the world why DC's creative talent and scene are on the rise, and prove that our city is a contender to be the next great creative capital."

The selected artist will be mentored by This January's Co-Founders and CCOs Maggie Winters and Zach Goodwin, along with an art mentor including Victoria Reis, Founder of Transformer, a Washington, DC based 501 (c) 3 artist-centered, non-profit visual arts organization.

Here is what the selected artist will receive from NOOK:
  • Stipend: $4,000 (50% at start, 50% at completion)
  • Materials: $1,000 materials stipend (artist purchases directly)
  • Workspace: Access to This January's (TJC) office space on Wednesdays and Fridays with a dedicated work area in the open office
  • Mentorship: Regular check-ins with Maggie Winters (Co‑Founder & CCO), Zach Goodwin (Co‑Founder & CCO), and art mentors including Victoria Reis from Transformer and Teddy Rodger, Cultural Programs Curator, Goethe-Institut Washington
  • Content & Visibility: Content capture with the TJC team, TJC team to post on social and tag the artist at various intervals throughout the process (artist is also encouraged to post and share the residency process)
  • Donate one work (install‑ready) to the This January collection

Eligibility and who This January is looking for:
  • This January's top criteria for selecting an artist will be finding that impossible-to-define x-factor. The agency doesn't want anyone letting their perception of the boundaries of "art" or traditional parameters get in the way of applying, as they welcome all insiders, outsiders, and exceptional weirdos.
  • All DC or DMV-based artists are welcome to apply (they must live or work in the DC area).
  • All disciplines welcome (visual, design, installation, new media, sound, AI/creative tech).
  • They also encourage applications from underrepresented artists and practices.
  • Additional Criteria:
    • Someone with a unique POV.
    • Feasibility of this idea or exploration in 8 weeks
    • Alignment with space constraints

For those interested in applying, please fill out the application form by Friday, December 19th. The first chosen artist will be notified in early January, and additional applicants may be chosen on a rolling basis thereafter.

For questions, please reach out to Maggie at maggie@thisjanuary.com.

You can find additional information on This January and the NOOK artist residency program website, or below.
