Editorial Cartooning talk from 2008 - Wuerker, KAL, & Thompson

Talking to Matt tonight, he brought up this event, so I'm resharing the photos.

Art of Political Cartooning in an Election Year

Matt Wuerker, KAL and Richard Thompson at the Writer's Center, Bethesda, MD, October 25, 2008.

WaPo drops Free for All letters page

After at least 33 years, The Washington Post appears to have dropped its Free for All letters page that ran on Saturdays. I think they've been gone for a month now, but that needs to be confirmed.

This is of interest to us because it was the major source for letters about the comic strips and editorial cartoons that the Post runs.

As the paper continues its right turn it appears to have less interest in anything that may be considered humorous criticism, even though it's editorial page editor comes from England where that type of humor is more prevalent.

KAL lectures in DC

KAL is starting with the history of political cartooning.

Profs & Pints DC: Cartoonists Under Siege

Mon, Nov 3rd, 2025 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM EST

Event Details

Profs and Pints DC presents: "Cartoonists Under Siege," on the rich history and uncertain future of political cartooning, with Kevin "KAL" Kallaugher, award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Economist, former artist in residence at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and frequent speaker at universities.

It's a tumultuous time to be a political cartoonist, with those who hold such a job title struggling to weather the failure of newspapers as well as pressure and threats stemming from the overall degradation of public discourse. Yet, meanwhile, the appetite for satire is exploding.

How did we get to this point? What does the future hold for the artists whose irreverent takes on the issues of the day have long stirred and informed political debate?

Hear such questions tackled by Kevin Kallaugher, an international award-winning political cartoonist widely known by the pen name KAL, who previously worked for The Baltimore Sun, continues to maintain a repository of his work at Kaltoons.com, and routinely speaks at prestigious higher-education institutions such as Harvard and Columbia.

In a copiously illustrated lecture he'll take you through the history of the cartoon craft, showing how irreverent illustrations in 18th century England and France paved the way for the caustic caricatures of today. He'll introduce you to influential caricaturists like Paris's Honore Daumier and New York's Al Hirschfeld and offer insights into the social skills required to excel in this ancient art.

Kallaugher will walk his audience through the unique set of challenges currently facing him and his colleagues. They include a new media landscape in which upstart media platforms have siphoned audiences away from the legacy media, the traditional home for cartoonists. On top of that, an increasingly threatening political environment has put satirists in crosshairs and political cartoonists face competition from Artificial Intelligence programs that feed, without pay or credit, off artists' work.

We'll look at how cartoonists are adapting and at the future prospects for visual satire. The lecture will close out with a live demonstration of how Kallaugher draws prominent public personalities. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

ABOUT SUPER PANCAKE AND THE TERRIBLE TOAST

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a . . . pancake? Our favorite syrupy superhero returns in a new graphic novel to face Breakfast Town's new supervillain and take down her terrible mind control machine . . . before it takes over the entire town!

When we last saw our hero, Peggy Pancake, she was learning to be more responsible by babysitting five mini muffins and rescuing Breakfast Town from a Mini Mega Laser of Doom disaster. Now, stranger things are happening . . . and Peggy is so busy trying to prevent Breakfast Town from becoming complete toast, she keeps missing important plans with her brother, Patrick! To try and mend their relationship, Peggy and Patrick's parents sign them up to perform together at the school talent show. Little do they know the Bacon Bullies will be in the audience, and Peggy's singing voice has been, well, more scrambled than it used to be.

As Peggy and her friends investigate the mysterious events around town, they find a familiar enemy working from a lair under the Syrup Sea . . . and she's brewing up a plan to mind control EVERYONE in Breakfast Town! To defeat The Terrible Toast, Peggy and her friends must put together an epic heist and win their biggest food fight yet. Can Peggy get Patrick to forgive her? And how will she ever survive the school talent show? Find out in: SUPER PANCAKE AND THE TERRIBLE TOAST!

Megan Wagner Lloyd is the Eisner-nominated writer of the bestselling and award winning kids' graphic novels Allergic, Squished, and Winging It, co-created with illustrator Michelle Mee Nutter, and the Super Pancake kids' graphic novel series, co-created with illustrator Abhi Alwar. Megan is also the author of the children's novel Haven: A Small Cat's Big Adventure, the picture book How to Catch Some Zzzs, illustrated by Jade Orlando, and several more books. She lives with her family in the Washington, DC area.

Abhi Alwar (like "a bumblebee") is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She has illustrated several picture books including Fall is For Beginnings by Rajani LaRocca, and Hamsters Make Terrible Roommates, written by Cheryl B. Klein, among others. Abhi is also the illustrator of the action-packed MG graphic novel series Super Pancake, written by Megan Wagner Lloyd. She works primarily digitally, supplemented with gouache and colored pencil. Her favorite kind of stories are the outrageous ones that make her laugh out loud and fall out of her chair (ow).
