The show takes place on Saturday, September 13, and Sunday, September 14, with programming and workshops about the amazing world of independent comics as well as an exhibitor floor featuring over 500 creators. Tom Gauld returns with Physics for Cats, his second collection of science-based cartoons for the New Scientist. Find out why every scientist worth their sodium chloride has a Tom Gauld cartoon taped to their electron microscope. This new batch of hilarious gags will be as important to every self-respecting scientist as a lab coat and goggles and oversize rubber gloves. Gigi Murakami Gigi Murakami will be present at SPX all weekend, signing her Ignatz-nominated supernatural horror manga RESENTER, her self-published horror anthology zine, Midnight Bites, and Abrams-published Are You Afraid of the Dark? Sinister Sisters horror anthology. Paul Karasik In 1994, Paul Auster's City of Glass was adapted into a graphic novel and became an immediate cult classic. In his SPX talk, Special Guest Paul Karasik will outline the journey in adapting Auster's complete "New York Trilogy" with the aid of master cartoonists, David Mazzucchielli ("Asterio Polyp") and Lorenzo Mattotti (New Yorker cover artist). Hidden secrets and comics Easter eggs will be revealed. The Guardian has called the 3-in-1 graphic novel, "…a stone cold masterpiece." Kayla E Eisner-nominated artist Kayla E is a Special Guest at SPX! She'll be signing her bestselling graphic memoir, Precious Rubbish. Although it's her debut book, it's been garnering a remarkable amount of praise, with everyone from The New York Times ("Precious Rubbish is a scream as precisely pitched as a middle C from a tuning fork") to The New Yorker ("Her wry portrait reveals a fresh eye, at once vulnerable and undaunted.") to Publishers Weekly ("This four-color atomic bomb of a comic signals the arrival of a formidable talent.") designating Kayla as an artist to watch! Dean Haspiel In Spring of 2023, Dean Haspiel launched a self-publishing concern focusing on a series of crowdfunded "Deep Cuts" from his pantheon of creator-owned characters, featuring COVID COP, BILLY DOGMA + JANE LEGIT, THE RED HOOK, and CHEST FACE. Local comic book and art collector Kat Wheatley has passed away

Joel Pollack, founder of Big Planet Comics in Bethesda posted yesterday on Facebook:

Kat was one of our first customers at Big Planet Comics and had subscriber box #34. She was an avid art collector, focusing on Catwoman art by J.H. Williams. Rest in peace, Kat!

I'm sure we were in the store together at the same time at some point, but I don't remember ever meeting her. (I was box #45, for the record).

Katrin Gabriella Wheatley Obituary

Katrin Wheatley, of Rockville, MD, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025 after a long valiant battle against Ovarian Cancer. She is mourned by her loving mother Gertraud de Thier, a host of relatives in Germany and friends from around the world. Katrin was born in Washington, D.C, and grew up in Bethesda, MD. After graduation from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut with a degree in Graphic Design, she returned to Maryland. Her professional career was spent in the financial field.

She enjoyed to travel, but her great love belonged to the arts, being a talented artist herself. Visiting Renaissance fairs and Comic Conventions brought her in contact with some of the best- and well-known artists. Her collection of comic art is the envy of her numerous friends. She enjoyed her mother's history books, trips to archaeology museums in Berlin and Munich, and mountain climbing in the Alps with her uncle, and special times with aunt. Getting together with her friends in Virginia once a month was always a special treat.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, MD on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at 12 noon. (Service livestreaming information found below) Interment will be private.

I reached out via Facebook to John Judy, a longtime customer / friend of the store, for any comments or updates. He said, "The only thing I think it’s missing is an acknowledgement that Kat was proudly and openly gay.  I think, especially during Pride Month, that Kat would have wanted it known.

I can’t say that Kat and I were super-tight since I had no idea she had been ill. We were Facebook friends and had known each other for decades through Big Planet. We fell into that category of friends who could go years without seeing each other and pick up right where we left off. She was a delightful person and I hope she knew how many people felt that way about her."

Golf cartoon blotters from Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co., aka 3M. Identified (on 6/25) by DD Degg of the Daily Cartoonist as Divot Diggers cartoonist Vic Forsythe (of Joe Jinks fame) with a 1926 example.

Hi-res scans of JR Williams' Bull of the Woods blotters now online

Over a decade ago, I bought these 12 blotters, put some scans on Flickr, and forgot about them. Recently someone asked for hi-res scans, and amazingly enough, they were actually filed under Williams.  These are calendars and ink blotters from June 1946-May 1947 from Hardware Mutual Casualty Company of Federated Hardware Mutuals, an insurance company in Minneapolis; and March 1943 from Vogt Roller Co. of Chicago and Lexington, which made rollers for printing
