PR: The 2025 SPX Lottery is coming!

Hello Everyone!

The SPX 2025 Lottery will soon be upon us! Stay tuned to your Inbox (or possibly your Spam folder) as we are a week away from the lottery. The email notice and social media posts will be sent out a week from today on March 24.

Here are the key dates (please excuse us if we are a few days late here and there):

  • Monday March 24: The lottery will open at Midnight Eastern Time.
  • Monday April 7 - Lottery closes at 11:59PM Eastern Time.
  • Early May- Lottery participants contacted.
  • Mid-May - Table payment and hotel room block information sent to all table holders.
  • June 5 - Payments due for all tables.
  • Mid-July - Table assignments sent out, begin to collect badge info and Debuts.

Here are the details:

  • We will be checking to make sure you publish single panel cartoon and comics (minicomix/comics, graphic novels, anthologies, etc., etc.), so if you're exclusively an illustrator, novelist, cosplayer or anime figure retailer (we get them) you will not be eligible for tables.

  • We will not be choosing the randomized lottery winners until after all applications have been received; this means there is no benefit to applying early or late (except maybe peace of mind).

  • You can only apply for the lottery once, and multiple entries will result in you being removed from the lottery pool (unless you email us and tell us you accidentally clicked twice or something, we do have a heart!).

If you have any questions email us at exhibitor-inquiries@smallpressexpo.com.

Best of luck to everyone!

That darn Michael Ramirez and Edith Pritchett

For the record, Edith Pritchett did not appear in Saturday's WaPo where normally she would have been 2 pages behind the letters on A15. Is she the first victim of the new editorial page policy?

March 29 update. No she is not. She's back in today's paper.

Rendered speechless

Michael Ramirez's March 7 editorial cartoon, "The response," alluding to the Democratic response to President Donald Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress, ignored the stream of rebuttals from the Democratic community. Check out the rebuttal from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont). He was right on.

Derek T. Havens, Mason Neck

Who is the rarest one of all?

Thank you to Edith Pritchett for her Feb. 24 editorial cartoon about President Donald Trump's approval ratings. It made me laugh out loud. I needed a pleasant break from the doomscrolling, and this was it.

Tom Brevoort on Amazing Fantasy 15's artwork's journey to the LoC

MAN WITH A HAT

Always Free. Occasionally Interesting.

https://tombrevoort.substack.com/p/155-if-it-looks-good-it-is-good

Dan Gvozden

I forgot to ask if you had any more details on the artwork's initial disappearance.

You mention that it disappeared from the Marvel warehouses in the '70s and/or '80s. But, I'm curious, do you know how it was being stored before then (given its perfect condition)? When did someone notice it was gone? Etc. I haven't found much information about its disappearance, just its sudden reappearance at the Library of Congress from an anonymous donor.

Which, I guess leads to another question. How has Marvel's artwork, especially those with a historic significance, been stored over the years?

This is a complicated question, Dan. But to give you a brief answer, the artwork for years was stored poorly in a dilapidated warehouse. And it wasn't a infrequent thing for whole books to be stolen (in some cases by creators working for the company.) But the value of the artwork in those days was considered minimal, so it was never all that big a deal. In the case of that AMAZING FANTASY artwork, I don't know much more for certain that you do, but as I understand things, the owner received it in the past as a gift, which isn't impossible—artwork would sometimes be given out to people involved in business dealings with Marvel— and first offered to return it to Steve Ditko. But Ditko's response was that the person had been given those pages fairly, and so he didn't see himself as having any claim on them. But that's all hearsay, and Ditko himself is gone now, so it's impossible to corroborate that story. Let's all just be happy that the boards wound up at the Library of Congress where they can be well-looked-after and enjoyed by many.
