Get Graphic: Hana Chatani Picks Up Where 'The Little Mermaid' Left Off

Interview by Troy-Jeffrey Allen

 Article Image 00c3

In Disney's reinterpretation(s) of The Little Mermaid, Aerial and Prince Eric ultimately ride off into the sunset. This, of course, is not the case in Hans Christian Andersen's original fairytale. In fact, tragically, Aerial is turned to sea foam after failing to win Eric's love. But Aerial had several sisters. And this is where artist/writer Hana Chatani picks back up.

VCU comic contest about banned art for students

Jurgen Comics Contest

Fall 2023

face wearing a crown peers over a wall. "Jurgen Comics Contest"

VCU Libraries invites graduate and undergraduate students from across Virginia Commonwealth University to enter the third annual Jurgen Comics Contest.

The Jurgen Comics Contest focuses on telling stories of banned art as a way to consider the complex relationship between art and society and the long history of censorship. By challenging students to explore these topics through comics, VCU Libraries asserts the value of comics as a medium of expression and social commentary, and a subject for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary study.

The website continues on with more information on how to sign up. For our interests, here's the 2022-2023 winners.

Sept 14: KEVIN JOHANSEN & LINIERS in drawing concert

I've seen Liniers do a paint talk in DC in the past - he's amazing. He lives in the northeast US now and draws Macanudo for American syndication. If you want to meet the "Bill Watterson of Argentina" - he's that famous at home - and a great guy to boot, this should be fun. I'm planning on going.

KEVIN JOHANSEN & LINIERS

  • Thursday, September 14, 2023
  • 7:00 PM 11:55 PM
  • 1356 Okie Street N.E.. Washington, DC, United States (map)

Art and humor come together on stage with the promise of an unforgettable evening.

Kevin offers a tour of the most recognized songs from his discography, while Liniers improvises and recreates them in drawings in real time on a screen placed as the background of the stage. A small world of music and illustrations will envelop the viewer in the adventure proposed by the two great artists and friends.

Two basic ticket tiers:

Kevin Johansen + LINIERS $69.00 VIP

  • Kevin Johansen + Liniers $49.00 General Admission
