March 11: GODFELL #1 BOOK CLUB at Fantom Comics

GODFELL #1 BOOK CLUB

>> SATURDAY, MARCH 11th @ 2PM!

To celebrate the comic editing debut of Fantom's own Raven we're hosting an in-person book club for the first issue of GODFELL!

One sunny day in the land of Kerethim, God falls dead from the sky. The impact sends out shockwaves that draw in royal families at war, shadowy creatures of the dark, and armies of the dispossessed, all coming to lay claim to parts of God's body. Into this power struggle wanders Zanzi Vuiline, a soldier and berserker trying to get home from a years-long war. Forced to fight her way through the strange landscapes in and on God's corpse, from the soles of its feet through the top of its head, Zanzi will acquire a mysterious traveling companion on her own pilgrimage.

The first issue is NOW IN STORE!
Get it in-person or online: https://stores.comichub.com/fantom_comics/products/godynamic-forcesll-1-cover-a-hennessy-farrell

Do you have any burning questions for the creative team? Submit your questions here for a chance to get your questions answered: https://forms.gle/jhZZtG3XtP9cAXD47

Answers to the questions will be available during the book club itself!

Due to the nature of this event being in-person in our small space we ask that customers wear their masks.

About the Author: Alison Bechdel is an internationally beloved cartoonist whose darkly humorous graphic memoirs, astute writing and evocative drawing have forged an unlikely intimacy with a wide and disparate range of readers. For twenty-five years Alison self-syndicated "Dykes to Watch Out For." The award-winning generational chronicle has been called "one of the pre-eminent oeuvres in the comics genre, period" by Ms. Magazine. From the strip was born the now famous "Bechdel Test," which measures gender bias in film. Her first graphic novel "Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic" was named the Best Book of the year by TIME, describing the tightly architected investigation into her closeted bisexual father's suicide "a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and their mysterious debts to each other." "Fun Home" was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award and was adapted into a Broadway musical that has won five Tony Awards, including "Best Musical." Alison is also the author of "Are YouMy Mother? A Comic Drama" which delves into her relationship with her mother, as well as the theories of the 20th century British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. Her latest work, a profoundly affecting graphic memoir titled "The Secret to Superhuman Strength," was released in 2021. The Guardian calls the memoir, "quietly astonishing" and "extraordinarily generous." Alison was the recipient of a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship and in 2014 she received a MacArthur "Genius" Grant. In their citation the MacArthur Foundation noted that Alison "is changing our notions of the contemporary memoir and expanding the expressive potential of the graphic form." In 2017, Alison was ushered in as Vermont's third cartoonist laureate.

About Mike Rhode

I'm a co-editor with Bill Watterson of the Art of Richard Thompson book. With that out of the way, I'm interested in all aspects of comic art. I'm coauthor of the annual Comics Research Bibliography which is posting daily here and on Facebook. I'm the Exhibits and Media Reviews editor, and assistant editor, for the International Journal of Comic Art, and I've written for Hogan's Alley and the Comics Journal. (One of my first articles for IJOCA is reprinted here on ComicsDC). A good recent article is in White House History on the cartoon-decorated Hay-Adams Hotel bar, Off the Record. I've been a judge for the RFK Journalism Awards editorial cartoon division from 2009-2022 and in 2015, 2016 & 2020, I was a Herblock Award judge. I've edited Harvey Pekar: Conversations, a book of interviews for the University Press of Mississippi which is available now. In 2012, I edited and published Biographical Sketches of Cartoonists & Illustrators in the Swann Collection of the Library of Congress by LOC’s curator Sara Duke. In 2014, I co-edited The Art of Richard Thompson and The Incomplete Art of "Why Things Are" by Richard Thompson in 2017. In 2022, I edited and published Compleating Cul de Sac, 2nd edition focused on Richard Thompson's comic strip. In 2008 for my ComicsDC blog, I was chosen Best (Comics) Art Blogger by the Washington City Paper and from 2010-16, I wrote on comics for the Washington City Paper. You can see most of my writings at my Academia.edu page. The Library of Congress and Michigan State University's Library's Comic Art Collection both have "Michael Rhode collections" of cartooning items I've donated, and MSU has individually cataloged hundreds of them. From 2015-2019, 2022-, I'm an associate member of the National Cartoonists Society. I've written two short comics pieces, illustrated by Kevin Rechin, for Matt Dembicki's non-fiction comics anthologies District Comics and Redistricted.

Reader maps, or Where in the world is ComicsDC?

Our First Principle

"I try to be interested in very nearly everything. I always think boredom is to some extent the fault of the bored." - Julian Kestrel, the hero in Kate Ross's novel Cut to the Quick.

Our Second Principle

"It takes less time to do a thing right than to explain why you did it wrong" - Longfellow, quoted on an Elliot's Amazing bottlecap.

What's it all mean in the end?

"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a heaven for?"

Robert Browning in Andrea del Sarto
