It's no secret that most New Yorker readers flip through the magazine to look at the cartoons before they ever lay eyes on a word of the text. But what isn't generally known is that over the decades a growing cadre of women artists have contributed to the witty, memorable cartoons that readers look forward to each week. Now Liza Donnelly, herself a renowned cartoonist with the New Yorker for more than twenty years, has written this wonderful, in-depth celebration of women cartoonists who have graced the pages of the famous magazine from the Roaring Twenties to the present day.

An anthology of funny, poignant, and entertaining cartoons, biographical sketches, and social history all in one, Very Funny Ladies offers a unique slant on 20th-century and early 21st-century America through the humorous perspectives of the talented women who have captured in pictures and captions many of the key social issues of their time.

Liza Donnelly has been a cartoonist for The New Yorker for over 30 years. When she started, she was one of only three women cartoonists being published by the magazine at that time. Ms. Donnelly has written and illustrated a series of children's books about dinosaurs and has edited four collections of cartoons. She has also contributed cartoons and illustrations to The New York Times, The Nation, Cosmopolitan, and many other national magazines.

Sara Lautman is a cartoonist who lives in Baltimore. Her work has been published by The New York Times, Playboy, MAD, The Paris Review, and she is a regular contributor to the New Yorker. She is the author of the collections I Love You, and The Ultimate Laugh, as well as many zines and minicomics. Her graphic novel, Jason, will be published in 2022 by Diskette Press. She teaches comics in the Humanistic Studies department at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

What's the one secret no one knows about you?

In The Lightning Rod, Archie Mint has a secret. He's led a charmed life—he's got a beautiful wife, two impressive kids, and a successful military career. But when he's killed while trying to stop a robbery in his own home, his family is shattered—and then shocked when the other shoe drops. Mint's been hiding criminal secrets none of them could have imagined.

While working on Mint's body before his funeral, mortician "Zig" Zigarowski discovers something he was never meant to see. That telling detail leads him to Mint's former top secret military unit and his connection to artist Nola Brown. Two years ago, Nola saved Zig's life—so he knows better than most that she's as volatile and dangerous as a bolt of lightning.

Following Nola's trail, he uncovers one of the U.S. government's most intensely guarded secrets—an undisclosed military facility that dates back to the Cold War and holds the key to something far more sinister: a hidden group willing to compromise the very safety and security of America itself.

Trouble always finds her…She's the lightning rod.

Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of twelve thrillers including The Escape Artist, and nonfiction books such as The Lincoln Conspiracy and the Ordinary People Change the World series. He is also the host of the TV show Brad Meltzer's Decoded on the History Channel. He lives in Florida with his wife and three children.

In a hollowed-out tree stump by a pond on the edge of the forest, Mina lives a peaceful life… when not interrupted by her enthusiastic father. He has a habit of bringing home surprises from the outside world. But one day her father brings an especially questionable surprise that shakes Mina's confidence. Author-illustrator Matthew Forsythe adds his stylized and whimsical illustrations in watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil to this emotionally resonant picture book about trust, worry, and loyalty between a father and daughter.

Matthew Forsythe is the author-illustrator of Pokko and the Drum, a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year, a recipient of the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award Honor, and a Charlotte Zolotow Honor Book. He is also an illustrator for animated films and television. His credits include Adventure Time, The Midnight Gospel, and Robin Robin.

Feb 21: Bill Hayes & Alison Bechdel in Conversation With Bill Goldstein

Sweat
Monday, February 21 @ 5pm (PT)
From Insomniac City author Bill Hayes, "who can tackle just about any subject… and make you glad he did" (San Francisco Chronicle), comes Sweat (Bloomsbury), a cultural, scientific, and personal history of exercise. Exercise is our modern obsession, and we have the fancy workout gear and fads from HIIT to spin classes to hot yoga to prove it. Exercise — a form of physical activity distinct from sports, play, or athletics — was an ancient obsession, too, but as a chapter in human history, it's been largely overlooked. In Sweat, Hayes runs, jogs, swims, spins, walks, bikes, boxes, lifts, sweats, and downward-dogs his way through the origins of different forms of exercise, chronicling how they have evolved over time, dissecting the dynamics of human movement. Hayes ties his own personal experience — and ours — to the cultural and scientific history of exercise, from ancient times to the present day, giving us a new way to understand its place in our lives in the twenty-first century. In The Secret to Superhuman Strength (Mariner), comics and cultural superstar Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home, delivers a deeply layered story of her fascination, from childhood to adulthood, with every fitness craze to come down the pike: from Jack LaLanne in the '60s ("Outlandish jumpsuit! Cantaloupe-sized guns!") to the existential oddness of present-day spin class. Readers will see their athletic or semi-active pasts flash before their eyes through an ever-evolving panoply of running shoes, bicycles, skis, and sundry other gear. But the more Bechdel tries to improve herself, the more her self appears to be the thing in her way. This gifted artist and not-getting-any-younger exerciser comes to a soulful conclusion. The secret to superhuman strength lies not in six-pack abs, but in something much less clearly defined: facing her own non-transcendent but all-important interdependence with others. Hayes and Bechdel will be joined in conversation by Bill Goldstein, book reviewer and author interviewer for NBC's "Weekend Today in New York" and founding editor of the books site of The New York Times on the Web.

March 16: Gigi Pandian, Kellye Garrett & Alex Segura

Under Lock & Skeleton Key
Wednesday, March 16 @ 5pm (PT)
Known for her wonderfully addictive characters, Gigi Pandian introduces Tempest Raj, her newest heroine, in a heartfelt series debut. Under Lock and Skeleton Key (Minotaur) layers stunning architecture with mouthwatering food in an ode to classic locked room mysteries that will leave readers enchanted. In Kellye Garrett's new "tense, twisting mystery" and "absolutely can't-put-it-down read" (Megan Miranda), Like a Sister (Mulholland), no one bats an eye when a Black reality TV star is found dead in the Bronx — except her estranged half-sister, whose refusal to believe the official story leads her on a dangerous search for the truth. In Secret Identity (Flatiron), Alex Segura uses his expertise as a comics creator as well as his unabashed love of noir fiction to create a truly one-of-a-kind novel — a rollicking literary mystery set in the world of comic books, hard-edged and bright-eyed, gritty and dangerous, and utterly absorbing.
