AMERICAN COMICS: A HISTORY

AMERICAN COMICS: A HISTORY

Jeremy Dauber
Dec 14, 2021
Author Jeremy Dauber will discuss the sweeping story of cartoons, comic strips, and graphic novels and their century-long hold on the American imagination. Starting with the Civil War and cartoonist Thomas Nast, creator of the lasting images of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus, Dauber whizzes readers through comics' progress in the 20th century and beyond: from the golden age of newspaper comic strips (Krazy Kat, Yellow Kid, Dick Tracy) to the midcentury superhero boom (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman); from the moral panic of the Eisenhower era to the underground comix movement. Dauber shows not only how comics have changed but how American politics and history have changed them. He describes the origins of beloved comics, champions neglected masterpieces, and argues that we can understand how America sees itself through whose stories comics tell.

The End of the Beginning of the End of Marvel Comics - an editorial

People have spent a lot of time talking about the health of DC Comics this past year or so especially after they fired a lot of their staff and  AT&T threw up the bolus of Time-Warner it was choking on, but Marvel, while ensconced in the big fat arms of Disney, is at much at risk. Recently, comics in their kids lines were published by IDW starting in 2018, but that deal was canceled this year. And we also saw Marvel actually dropping some titles like Fantastic Four that they didn't control the movie rights of. Now, they're again licensing out their characters to completely different publishers, but this time for the adult reader and collector market - and once that starts, I don't think the Mouse will worry too much about publishing their own comics anymore. We've already seen them destroy the Disney line multiple times. Future historians will undoubtedly debate the point, but I'm putting my marker down here. Fortunately, I'm old enough not to care much anymore.

Abrams PR says, "FANTASTIC FOUR: FULL CIRCLE is the first graphic novel that Marvel has licensed to another publisher in more than 40 years. The publication also will mark the launch of MarvelArts, an exciting new graphic novel collaboration between Marvel Comics and Abrams ComicArts."

You could read a reworking of that release here -

Superhero Christmas and Super Mustache in the Post

The 10 best Christmas-themed superhero movies and shows you can stream right now [in print as Superhero offerings that flex their Christmas spirit]

A Review of The Story of Ace, The Dog That Comes from Space by Anna “Annina” Lorenzi with Illustrations & Preface by Lele Corvi

 by Jason D. DeHart

The Story of Ace, The Dog That Cames from Space, by Anna "Annina" Lorenzi with Illustrations & Preface by Lele Corvi, Original A19, ASIN B09J34T8VQ, $2.99, https://www.amazon.com/Story-Ace-that-Comes-Space/dp/B09L4RB6HL/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=anna+anna+lorenzi&qid=1639414885&sr=8-1

Perhaps a bit more of an illustrated collection of short stories than a traditional comic, The Story of Ace is nevertheless a delightful series of episodes that expand on the (mis)adventures of a loveable animal character. The book can be read in part, or from beginning to end, and I can see the possibilities for showing young readers both the comics-style pages and the prose as an entertaining experience.

Anna “Annina” Lorenzi’s story is enjoyable and Lele Corvi's art is attractive, polished, and has an enjoyable sweep in its style. The chapters pair up with the comics pages as an integrated way of telling a story. This is a book of humor, heart, and fun. Readers who are expecting the flow of comic to comic can also read the text this way, although the prose in between is well worth the time. Matching the appeal of the images, the prose is conversational and light.

I am seeing possibilities in the book for connecting young readers, especially with the character of Ace and the science fiction elements – as well as the short story structure of the book.
