Dec 13: National Archives: American Comics, A History

American Comics, A History

Scheduled for Dec 13, 2021

Author Jeremy Dauber will discuss the sweeping story of cartoons, comic strips, and graphic novels and their century-long hold on the American imagination. Starting with the Civil War and cartoonist Thomas Nast, creator of the lasting images of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus, Dauber whizzes readers through comics' progress in the 20th century and beyond: from the golden age of newspaper comic strips (Krazy Kat, Yellow Kid, Dick Tracy) to the midcentury superhero boom (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman); from the moral panic of the Eisenhower era to the underground comix movement. Dauber shows not only how comics have changed but how American politics and history have changed them. He describes the origins of beloved comics, champions neglected masterpieces, and argues that we can understand how America sees itself through whose stories comics tell.

Speaking about that Comics Research Bibliography...

The original site has gone offline, but you can use the Internet Archive's capture of it. It contains works listed between 1996 and 2009... which means this is the 25th Anniversary! Wow....

William Brown, former Silver Spring cartoonist, starts a Ukraine-based newsletter

From Bill:

I'm alive and still in Ukraine.

Those of you on social media have seen the photos and illustrations I've posted. BUT, not everyone is on social media. Some important family/friends only see the emails. And even the emails, heavy with images, are a problem for some. I'd like to be able to make images and updates that appear on social media available to everyone.

Also, I'm beginning to make some comics. I have a large backlog of sketches and rough drafts. I'd like to share these with the general public on a site dedicated to that purpose.

My solution is this: I am starting an online publication of sorts. It might be called a newsletter. It is definitely on Substack, a popular site for independent writers, journalists and creators. The subscription is FREE.

It's called Native Cpeaker
