PR: The 2020 SPX Lottery is Here!

Hello Everyone!

The SPX 2020 Lottery is now open! SPX will be held September 12 to September 13 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center (same place as always).

Head here to apply. A few things to keep in mind:
  • Applications are due April 3rd at 5pm EST and will not be accepted afterwards
  • We will not be picking the randomized lottery winners until after all applications have been received; this means there is no benefit to applying early or late (except maybe peace of mind).
  • In light of COVID-19, we will not be asking for any payment until late May/early June and applying to the lottery is completely non-binding. If you are selected or placed on the waitlist expect more communication from us as we get closer to the date.
  • You can only apply for the lottery once, and multiple entries will result in being removed from the lottery pool (unless you email us and tell us you accidentally clicked twice or something, we do have a heart!).
  • While we allow table sharing, there is a limit of two people per half table without approval, so be aware of that when requesting a full or half table. The hotel has a hard occupancy cap on the hall and if everyone tries to fit 8 people at a table, we'll exceed it.
  • We will be checking to make sure you make or publish comics, so if you're exclusively an illustrator, novelist, cosplayer or anime figure retailer (we get them) we reserve the right to remove you from the pool. With this in mind we will be collecting direct links to your work so please have a sample of it available somewhere on the internet.
Hit us up on Instagram, Twitter, or  Facebook for a quick reply. We're also happy to chat if you email us at exhibitor-inquiries@smallpressexpo.com.
Best of luck to everyone!

Winner of the 2019 Believer Book Award for Fiction : Ebony Flowers

Announcing the winners of the 2019
Believer Book Awards

Winner: Hot Comb
by Ebony Flowers
Drawn & Quarterly

It feels rare to encounter a book as full of life as Ebony Flowers's debut collection of short graphic fictions, Hot Comb. The style in which each story is rendered changes according to the narrative's needs, but Flowers's impressionistic panels are a constant. They vibrate with an energy that suggests they've been invested with the world she portrays. In Hot Comb, Flowers has produced something authentically new and exciting.

Was Emily Richards the first black female New Yorker cartoonist in 2004?

New Yorker cartoon expert (and cartoonist) Michael Maslin has written in with a correction to the stories about Liz Montague being the first black female cartoonist. Michael publishes Ink Spill, an excellent blog on NY'r cartoons:

The first known black female New Yorker cartoonist is Emily Richards.

You'll see that Emily's A-Z entry notes she is the first known black female NYer cartoonist. We'll never know if she's the first. There are too many unknown cartoonists on the Spill's New Yorker Cartoonists A-Z

Emily Richards (Hopkins) New Yorker work: 2004 – . Born, Boston, Massachusetts, 1970.  Grew up in Oregon, Hawaii, West Virginia, and Virginia.  Attended Williams College and West Virginia University. Received a masters degree at Johns Hopkins University. Worked, initially, as a New Yorker fact checker before becoming a New Yorker cartoonist. When Ms. Richards married New Yorker cartoonist Marshall Hopkins they became the third married New Yorker cartoonist couple in the magazine's history (Mary Petty & Alan Dunn were the first, Liza Donnelly & Michael Maslin were the second). Ms. Richards (Hopkins) is the first known black female New Yorker cartoonist.
