The Art of Richard Thompson is available in French

As of last fall, The Art of Richard Thompson is available in French (in Europe at least) from Urban Comics of Paris. They have done an excellent job on the book production. Cul de Sac is also reprinted by them in three volumes. The American version is sold out from Andrews McMeel. The Incomplete Art of Why Things Are (The Richard Thompson Library Volume 1) is still currently available.

The note says that translated versions of the comics have been added at the back of this edition.

Library of Congress Exhibition Pairs Herblock With Other Socially Engaged Art

By Lauren Messman

A version of this article appears in print on Jan. 25, 2019, on Page C5 of the New York edition with the headline: Herblock in National Exhibition.

Art in Action: Herblock and Fellow Artists Respond to Their Times
Jan. 31, 2019 – Aug. 17, 2019

A new exhibition, "Art in Action," will explore the tradition of artists as social commentators. Drawings by renowned editorial cartoonist Herblock will be paired with historical and contemporary artists' prints, drawings and posters that respond to major issues from the 17th century to the current day. As a political cartoonist for The Washington Post and other newspapers, Herbert L. Block, better known as Herblock, devoted his career to creating social commentary through art. Topics that drew his attention provide the exhibition's framework, including civil rights, women's rights, health, war, refugees and the role of media.

Herblock's cartoons provide a call and response with other socially-engaged artists who expressed their opinions through art. The exhibition includes depictions of Pablo Picasso and works in the global tradition of political art by Jacques Callot, Francisco de Goya, and Leopoldo Méndez – as well as modern and contemporary American artists including Alexander Calder, Enrique Chagoya, Shepard Fairey, Kerry James Marshall, Juan Fuentes, Favianna Rodriguez and Helen Zughaib, among others.

A thoughtful and endearing gay YA romance set in a bakery
Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band, if he can just convince his dad to let him quit their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away his days over rising doughs and hot ovens. But in the midst of interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easy-going guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of breads, love begins to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.

Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, where the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.
This event is free and open to the public.

Feb 28: Lucy Knisley at Solid State Books

Children are welcome at this event!

Join us for a Parent Happy Hour while hearing from New York Times–bestselling author Lucy Knisley, who writes about fertility, pregnancy, and motherhood in this emotionally compelling and thought-provoking graphic memoir.

Lucy will be offering portraits of guests and/or their kids.

We will also have activities for kids to keep them busy!

About Kid Gloves:

If you work hard enough, if you want it enough, if you're smart and talented and “good enough,” you can do anything. Except get pregnant. Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a mother. But when it was finally the perfect time, conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she’d ever attempted. Fertility problems were followed by miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy was plagued by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience in labor and delivery. Kid Gloves follows Lucy’s personal transition into motherhood, and it also illustrates the history and science of reproductive health from all angles, full of curious facts and inspiring (and notorious) figures in medicine and midwifery.

Lucy Knisley is the author and illustrator of beloved graphic novels about memory, identity, food, and family. She previously published the New York Times bestseller Relish: My Life in the Kitchen and Something New with First Second. She lives and works in Chicago, with her husband and child. lucyknisley.com
