UPCOMING - September 22 - Raina Telgemeier signing Drama

Raina Telgemeier, creator of the New York Times bestseller Smile, will be appearing at both our Vienna and College Park stores on Saturday, September 22, for her brand new book Drama!

Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school's production of Moon Over Mississippi, she's a terrible singer. Instead she's the set designer for the stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen, and when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier! Following the success of Smile, Raina Telgemeier brings us another graphic novel featuring a diverse set of characters that humorously explores friendship, crushes, and all-around drama!

Nobrow 7: Brave New World SC

by Anders Nilsen, Andrew Rae, Domitille Collardey, Eleanor Davis, Ethan Rilly, Henry McCausland, Jillian Tamaki, Joose Swarte, Joseph Lambert, Louis Roskosch, Luke Pearson, Michael Deforge, Alex Spiro, Mikkel Sommer, Richard Short, Rob Hunter, Tom Gauld, Sam Vanalleheersch, Eda Akaltun

A brilliant new anthology from the Nobrow crew, this one has a theme of "Brave New World", leading to some clever looks at the future or the past, from 3 best friends remembering the first time they met as children, to a kid discovering a new world in the woods juxtaposed with a spaceman finding a new planet, to an alphabet of a bright future and an alphabet of a dystopian one! These are seriously some of our favorite creators ever, this is a great deal and package!

Drama SC

by Raina Telgemeier

Raina is finally back with a new book after her smash hit Smile! This story follows Callie, a set designer in her middle school drama department, and their attempts to put on a new play. Throw in her unrequited crush, some cute new boys trying out for the play, and lots of good friendships, and you have a tale that unfolds slowly but compellingly. It isn't called Drama for nothing!

all ages!

Foster #1

by Brian Buccellato and Noel Tuazon

A strange new series where monsters secretly lurk on the edges of society, and a broken ex-soldier tries to take care of the child of his junkie neighbor, only to get caught up over his head when the monsters come looking for the boy! Strange but a good start!

Peter Panzerfaust 1: The Great Esape SC

by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Tyler Jenkins

A retelling of Peter Pan in World War 2, where young Brit Peter encounters a group of French orphans in Calais, as the Nazis invade! Working together they must fight their way through enemy lines to safety in Paris!

Cat's Cradle 1: The Golden Twine SC

by Jo Rioux

A great new all ages fantasy adventure in the vein of Bone or Three Thieves! Suri is a young girl living with a circus caravan who dreams of becoming a tamer of the monsters that cross the mountains into civilized lands! When she crosses paths with both a giant beast captured by the circus and the mysterious werecats, she gets into a very big adventure very quickly! Fun and fast-paced!

all ages!

The Voyeurs HC

by Gabrielle Bell

A collection of Bell's ruminations and diary from over 5 years, including her time when she was promoting the film she made with then boyfriend Michel Gondry in Japan, their time on vacation in rural France, trying to make another long distance relationship work, and a trip to Comicon! Harshly honest and compelling, very fascinating stories.

Steed and Mrs. Peel #0

by Mark Waid and Steve Bryant

All new adventures based on The Avengers TV show from the '60s! The dastardly Hellfire Club is back, with a new drug that ages people, and they are kidnapping British agent and making them think they have been asleep until the distant year 2000! Fun and campy adventure, in the light hearted vein that Waid is so good at, like in Daredevil and The Rocketeer!

Amulet 5: Prince of the Elves SC

by Kazu Kibuishi

At last a new book of Amulet! The Elf King is trying to make new Amulets, Emily is trying to stop him, and her own personal Amulet may be a darker thing than she could have thought! Great fantasy adventure for fans of Bone!

Sept 21-23: Intervention 2012 in Rockville

NEW GUESTS ANNOUNCED FOR INTERVENTION 2012

Noted Video creators and films to grace Maryland's only "Internet Convention"; Founders mark convention's 3rd year of inspiring digital creators.

ROCKVILLE, MD — July 25, 2012 – An additional round of guests for the third annual event Intervention, Maryland's only "Internet Convention", have been announced – and, in keeping with the convention's focus, all of the guests are creators who have made a name for themselves by sharing their creations on the Internet.

Among the newly announced guests and events are Daniella Pineda, Actress and Online Video creator for CollegeHumor.com, A.J. Rosa, creator of video series My Life With Sega, Cinematic For The People, a live-action bad movie riffing experience, Spacetrawler creator Christopher Baldwin, Cosplay Burlesque, a unique combo of Burlesque and geeky skit comedy, and showings of the hit cult films Dork of the Rings, Harvey Putter and the Ridiculous Premise, Browncoats, Ninjas Vs. Monsters, and more.

These creators – and more still to be announced – will be present at the Hilton Washington DC/Rockville in Rockville, MD, from September 21st through September 23rd, for a weekend celebration of cyber-culture, geek life, and the creative opportunities of the internet. The event's co-founder, Onezumi Hartstein, said, "[co-founder] James Harknell and I wanted to put together an event that would compliment the existing print-centric conventions – we wanted to showcase the creators who use the Internet as their primary publishing method. We felt that web creators needed their own space, We're giving them that with Intervention." After successful runs in 2010 and 2011, this year will mark Hartstein's third time organizing the event.

The convention also features panels, educational content, children's programming, board and video gaming, an extensive Artist Alley, Live Action Roleplaying, musical performances, and plenty of giveaways. As in past years, there will be a charity auction to benefit the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an international non-profit digital advocacy group that helps to defend civil liberties in the digital space.

Tickets for Intervention 2012 can be bought at http://www.interventioncon.com for $40 for the full weekend (through August 31, 2012); and then regular price of $45 afterwards at the door.

Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "Tranquillity"

From Mike Flugennock:

When Neil Armstrong died last Saturday, my boyhood finally officially ended.

By all rights, flags all over this country should be lowered to half-staff in honor of one of the last real American heroes, but it would still be meaningless, because no one can lower the one flag that really matters.

PR: My new book - Batman's biggest secret is...

...not Bruce Wayne.

"
Fast paced...fun...impressive and fascinating. A must-have."
—Forbes

After six years of work, 34 rejections, multiple rumors debunked, and several new mysteries uncovered, my nonfiction picture book for older readers, Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman, is out.

Unprecedented in both subject and format, it tells the startling story of Bill Finger.

Bill Who?

Bill who...

...designed Batman's now-iconic costume.

...wrote the first Batman story.

...wrote many of the best Batman stories of his first 25 years, including his groundbreaking (and heartbreaking) origin.

...was the original writer of Robin, the Joker, and Catwoman.

...named Gotham City, the Batmobile, and Batman's secret identity, Bruce Wayne.

...nicknamed Batman "the Dark Knight."

But Bill who...

...was barely credited as a Batman writerand never as co-creatorin his lifetime. He is not even in the credits of either film (The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) named for the nickname he coined.

Why?

Because cartoonist Bob Kane, Bill's onetime partner, took all the credit. In 1974, Bill died alone and poor. No obit. No funeral. No gravestone.

No kidding.

You do not have to be a Batman fan or even a superhero fan to find something worthwhile in this book. It contains the first "new" photos of Bill in decades and significant never-published info...including a bombshell with the potential to make pop culture history. Announcing it at Comic-Con International caused the crowd to erupt into applause.
