SPX Announces Original Art Donations for the Small Press Expo Collection at the Library of Congress

SPX Announces Original Art Donations for the Small Press Expo Collection at the Library of Congress

For Immediate Release                  Contact: Warren Bernard

                                                        E-Mail: warren@spxpo.com

Bethesda, Maryland; June 28, 2012 – Small Press Expo is pleased to announce the acquisition and subsequent donation to the Library of Congress of original art by various Small Press Expo alumni and exhibitors. Sara Duke, curator of Applied and Graphic Material in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress had this to say about the donation:

We are excited that our partnership with SPX is leading to a greater understanding of the  patrimony of comics; the wealth of original cartoon art here at the Library of Congress now includes independent and small press cartoonists. We are looking forward to the Expo in September, and hope that more talented artists will join the ranks of Raina Telgemeier, Jim Rugg, Jen Sorensen, Matthew Thurber, Keith Knight, Jim Woodring, and Matt Bors in the SPX Collection at the Library of Congress.

The originals include examples of Kurtzman and Glyph Award winner Keith Knight's daily comic strip, The Knight Life as well as examples from his other strips K Chronicles and (Th)ink. 2012 Herblock Award winner Matt Bors donated a number of originals, as did Jen Sorensen, whose Slowpoke syndicated strip  won the 2012 AltWeekly Award for Cartoons.

Every year SPX is honored to have flyers, posters, tote bags, badges, and a program guide decorated with original works by creators attending the show. In addition to gifting copies of the 2011 Small Press Expo's posters, flyers, etc., to the Library of Congress, creators such as Jim Woodring, Matthew Thurber and Jim Rugg donated their originals to be alongside the printed versions. This activity, which will be performed on a yearly basis, will enshrine the artistic heritage of the annual Small Press Expo festival in the Library of Congress cartoon and comics holdings.

The Small Press Expo Collection at the Library of Congress is a first of its kind partnership to preserve the legacy of the indie comics community by focusing on original art by SPX exhibitors, as well as limited edition mini-comics and other publications that are created by the SPX community.

About SPX

Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. SPX is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit that brings together more than 300 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers and distributors each year. Graphic novels, mini comics, and alternative comics will all be on display and for sale by their authors and illustrators, as well as a series of panel discussions and interviews with this year's guests.

As in previous years, profits from the SPX will go to support the the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program, which funds graphic novel purchases for public and academic libraries, as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), which protects the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals. For more information on the CBLDF, go to their website at http://www.cbldf.org.

SPX 2012 will be held Saturday, September 15  and Sunday, September 16.  For more information on the Small Press Expo, please visit http://www.spxpo.com.

UPCOMING July 4 - Big Planet Comics 26th Anniversary Sale

In 1986, Big Planet Comics was born, so come celebrate 26 years with us on the 4th of July when we do our annual sale! All stores!

Since the 4th falls in the middle of the week this year, we may do even shorter hours than our normal holiday schedule, but we will let you know!

___________________

Rio: The Complete Saga HC

by Doug Wildey

One of the greatest Western adventures done in comics is finally collected together, along with 2 never before published stories! Rio is a gunslinger/highwayman now pardoned by President Grant and operating as a lawman. He heads out to deal with a crooked train magnate who is angering the Indians and also crossed paths with Jesse James, Doc Holliday, the Earps, and plenty of lowdown thugs. Wildey's amazing art really sets this apart, and the entire book is shot from his originals so you can see every detail!

New York, Mon Amour HC

by Jacques Tardi, Benjamin Legrand and Dominique Grange

A series of New York-based stories by Tardi, including the surreal tale Cockroach Killer, about an exterminator who gets mixed up a group of killers, and tales of a Vietnamese woman who comes for revenge, a Parisian who instinctively flies to NYC, and a man who looks a lot like John Lennon. All set in the decrepid New York of the 1980s! Great and strange.

Before Watchmen: Comedian #1

by Brian Azzarello and J. G. Jones

The story of the Comedian begins! Interestingly, this takes up with the Comedian hanging out with the Kennedys in the bright spot of America, even as he is still being sent to do dark things, as a focus is built on the alternate history of the Watchmen universe. Intriguing start!

Angel & Faith 1: Live Through This SC

by Christos N. Gage, Rebekah Isaacs, and Phil Noto

After the events of Season 8 of the Buffy comic, Angel and Faith find themselves thrown together as a very disfunctional team. Angel attempts to find redemption by resurrecting someone who died (read Buffy to find out who!), and we all know how well bringing people back from the dead goes! Plus a one-shot Harmony story.

Marathon SC

by Boaz Yakin and Joe Infurnari

As the Persian invasion fleet draws near to landing in Greece at Marathon, Eucles the messenger is sent to run to Sparta and beg that they help Athens fight off the invaders. The true story of the marathon race, set against a dramatic background of battles, treachery, and chases! Pretty cool art by Infurnari too!

Team Cul de Sac HC

by Richard Thompson and everyone!

When Cul de Sac creator Richard Thompson was diagnosed with Parkinson's, this tribute book was put together to raise money for charities fighting against Parkinson's! Not only do you get pinups and comic strips from some of the best comic strip artists out there (including many local DC cartoonists), you even get such things as a painting by Bill Watterson! A great huge book.

Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb HC

by Michael Gallagher and Jonathan Fetter-Vorm

A historical look at the development and creation and use of the atomic bomb project in America, this very well-researched book also deals with the ethical issues raised during and after the bomb attacks on Japan.

Mars Attacks #1

by John Layman and John McCrea

The classic Topps card scifi series returns to comics with a prequel about the first Martians crash-landing on Earth. When one is taken prisoner and sold to a carnival, things aren't going to go well! New "cards" set the scene for each chapter heading in a nice nod to the original collectible cards. Pulpy alien carnage!

I'm a big fan of Tim Kreider's former cartoons for the Baltimore City Paper, and enjoy his current columns for the New York Times. Unfortunately I can't make this, but the store is getting a book signed for me.
