What:

This hymn is for D.C.
For streets that steam in the heat.
For blocks that flood in the rain.
For rivers that keep climbing.
For the people who hold the line.

The attitude is punk.
The vision is solarpunk.
The work starts here.

Sea levels in D.C. have risen six to seven inches over the past 50 years, the Washington Post reported. This summer brought one of the most humid stretches on record — 27 days with oppressive dew points above 75 °F, the Associated Press reported. The city is feeling the future now.

On Saturday, Solarpunk DC and Big Planet Comics bring artists, activists, and comic creators together in Washington, D.C. A moderated conversation. Live illustration. A starter kit of graphic novels and comics. Talks on climate, transit, and green space. The five pillars of solarpunk lead the way: community-driven governance, just energy transition, future-ready transit, circular economies, and thriving green spaces.

"The future is here. It's just not shared equally," said Solarpunk DC founder Lavala Harris. "We close that gap with solutions rooted in community, creativity, and hope."

What is Solarpunk:

Solarpunk blends speculative fiction, climate science, and grassroots action.
Cities run on renewable energy.
Transit moves fast.
Green spaces feed and connect neighbors.
Communities build on equity and cooperation.

It rejects dystopia.
It offers an optimistic blueprint.
Technology works with nature and culture.
It appears in literature, graphic novels, urban design, and local projects worldwide.
It is an aesthetic and a framework for change.

About Event

Imagine a future where our cities are green, equitable, and powered by clean energy. Join solarpunk dc and Big Planet Comics for an afternoon of community, creativity, and conversation!

We'll gather at Big Planet Comics' U Street location for an intimate discussion with local artists on the solarpunk aesthetic and literary genre and the opportunity for our community to translate those values to real life.

In addition to a moderated conversation with our featured artists,

  • Explore a curated solarpunk starter kit by our partners Big Planet Comics of graphic novels and comics that imagine more community-driven futures that leverage advanced technology while embracing nature and wellness sovereignty;

  • Mingle with fellow fans and creators over light refreshments, watch a local artist bring solarpunk scenes to life in a live drawing session, and more!

Throughout the afternoon, we'll highlight the five pillars of solarpunk: community‑driven governance, just energy transition, future‑ready transit, circular & sustainable economies, and thriving green spaces.

Come share ideas, discover new artists and their work, and help shape a hopeful vision for D.C.'s future.
