Professor Doris Jones from the American University in Cairo presents the Ahmed Toughan Cartoon Collection to showcase how these artifacts foster meaningful archival literacy experiences for undergraduate students. The American University in Cairo's Rare Books and Special Collections Library has acquired more than 600 of the 5,000 original drawings. Toughan, (1929-2014) was a renowned political cartoonist, illustrator and painter. Throughout his entire career, he captured in bold silhouettes the political and social crises the world encountered, with special focus on the Middle East. His cartoons were featured in Egypt's major daily newspapers and magazines such as Rose al-Yousuf, Akhbar al-Youm, and al-Jumhuria, which Toughan co-founded in 1953 with his friend, President Anwar al-Sadat. He was also the recipient of many national and international awards from Algeria and Yemen, as well as the Best Arab Cartoonist Award, 1987; Grand Medal of Fine Arts, 1997; State Medal of Science and Arts of the First Order, 1997 and Nile State Award, 2014. This collection offers a bounty of visual artifacts for archival education that are rich in intellectual substance for curriculum design.
