Cullen Murphy, "Cartoon County" at Politics & Prose Bookstore

Cullen Murphy, "Cartoon County"

Murphy, editor at large at Vanity Fair and the author of books including God's Jury, grew up in the middle of a thriving community of illustrators and cartoonists in southwestern Connecticut. His father, John Cullen Murphy (1919-2004), who had been a student of Norman Rockwell's, drew the popular comic strips Prince Valiant and Big Ben Bolt. Their neighbors were the artists responsible for classic comics ranging from Beetle Bailey to Hi and Lois to Family Circus. Murphy's memoir pays tribute to these many creative individuals and warmly evokes the spirit of a bygone era.

In this collection, he talks about his difficulty finding lasting love, and seeks to understand his commitment issues. Among many hilarious profundities, Kreider meditates upon his nineteen-year-old cat, wondering if it's the most enduring relationship he'll ever have.

Feb 6: Emily Carroll at Politics and Prose

The Post reviews Black Lightning

'Black Lightning' plays well to its strengths, rather than playing like a token effort [in print as On CW, 'Black Lightning' is oh-so current].

TV critic

I'm rather tickled to hear that The 100 are the villains. They're from 1970s-era comics where Kirby had Darkseid attempting to take over Metropolis' underworld. Morgan Edge, the owner of the tv station that Clark Kent worked at, was one of his agents as well.
