Nadel winds down PictureBox

Dan Nadel (who used to live in the D.C. area and worked at Big Planet Comics) has announced the end of PictureBox, his small press comics/art publishing venture since 2004. Read the interview with Nadel at ComicsReporter.com.

PictureBox recently published Frank Santoro's Pompeii.

Richard Thompson broke his hip yesterday

(reposted from Facebook)

Hello cartoon and comic fans. Nick Galifianakis here.

I'm trying to generate a tsunami of good thoughts for the only actual genius I know (I'm apologize to whoever else I just insulted) Richard Thompson. RT's Parkinson's has made him less stable and he took quite a tumble yesterday - he broke his hip, which is being replaced at 3 pm today.

A joint replacement will get Richard up on his feet very quickly -screwing in a pin, which was briefly considered, would mean a much much longer convalescence whereas the joint replacement means he's up and rehabbing very quickly, very important considering he's already starting out from a compromised physical position.

Surgery will be followed by about 5 days in the hospital.

Please send good thoughts his way. Now.

More later...

Collecting Steve Canyon

Local journalist and comics fan Michael O'Connell is collecting pieces of a Steve Canyon collection originally assembled by Richard Bauman, a former Coast Guard officer. Mike tells ComicsDC he has interviewed the Bauman family and is working on a story about it. Meanwhile, he's started to post some of the Steve Canyon images on his Pinterest and Facebook pages, along with tidbits regarding how he acquired a few of the pieces.

The Workhouse Arts Center (housed in a former prison in Lorton, Va.) features some comics-related artwork, such as the oil painting "Fortress of Solitude," by artist Nicholas Zimbro, and a quilt called "A Funny Page?" by artist Sandi Goldmanwho used comics images from a fabric she found to make this neat quilt.

Ben Hatke to be guest at Angouleme

From Ben's blog:

Art and Adventure

Angoulême!

Posted: 27 Nov 2013 07:59 AM PST

Well, the news is official: Zita the Spacegirl (or more precisely, Zita la fille de l'espace, the French edition published by Rue de Sevères) is one of the official selections for this year's Angoulême festival! And I will be going to France to attend!

Angoulême is one of the largest comics festivals in the world and attending the event has been on my dream-list for some time now. France has quite possibly the strongest comics-as-literature culture in the world and some of my very favorite artist/writers (or at least their publishers) will be at the festival. I can't wait.

Here's the list in The Comics Reporter, and here's another article about the selections (and Hawkeye).

Aphelion Arc uses cinema-style trailers to preview stories

Steve Artley notes:

On my APHELION ARC website, I will be previewing upcoming stories using cinema-style trailers that I create myself using images from storyboard rough sketches and music that I compose and perform. As these stories are in production, it gives readers a glimpse of stories in the anthology series. The Aphelion Arc opening sequence will be common to all the trailers. One such trailer for the story, "On Target" is currently available for viewing on the Aphelion Arc STORIES page http://aphelionarc.com/stories.html. Click the STORY TWO button.

Arlingtonian lectured at Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum

Tad Suiter (George Mason University) gave a talk on "The Katzenjammer Kids go to the Armory Show: Cartoonists and Modern Art, 1913" at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum academic conference this month. I was quite surprised to hear the introduction of another local cartoon historian. His paper was excellent and I hope we'll see it in print soon.
