Free Comic Book Day and more this weekend

After the success of Awesome Con, we've still got a lot of comic-related events going on this weekend too. Iron Man 3 opens on Friday, and it's already been bigger than The Avengers in Europe.

Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday, and local comic book stores will have a selection of the 52 comics that were published this year. Big Planet Comics, our largest local chain, will have eight cartoonists spread between its four locations including Steve Artley, Michael Cowgill, Matt Dembicki, Andrew Cohen, Evan Keeling, Art Hondros, John Gallagher, and John Staton. Most of the cartoonists are in the DC Conspiracy co-op or have work in the book District Comics and the new free comics newspaper, Magic Bullet #6. Other cartoonists from the two publications include Troy-Jeffery Allen and Matt Rawson (along with Superman historian Glen Weldon) at Fantom Comics in Union Station and Rafer Roberts and John Shine at Beyond Comics in Gaithersburg. According to editor Carolyn Belefski, the issue is almost 'sold-out' so pick one up this weekend and get it signed as well.  Carolyn and her co-author Joe Carabeo will be at Laughing Ogre comics in Fairfax. Local comic critic Glen Weldon has suggestions about the comics for you on NPR.

Ranging a bit further afield Jacob Warrenfeltz will be at Third Eye Comics in Annapolis. Jacob had planned to have a special new publication, but now tells us "'Bella & Bunny Man Bridge' is a short 8-page mini comic that Zarmina Sulaiman and I  came up with.  It's a cute, kid friendly story about a fluffy white dog and her cool cat sidekick as they brave the adventure of investigating Clifton VA's "Bunny Man Bridge".  Our plan was to have this ready for Free Comic Book Day.  Unfortunately we aren't going to have the book back from the printer in time, so the next opportunity to get your hands on this new mini comic will be the DC Zine Fest, which is happening on July 20." Rounding out our list of local cartoonists, Steve Conley and Frank Cho will be appearing at Cards, Comics & Collectibles in Riestertown, Md along with Adam Kubert.

On Sunday, you can attend the world premiere of the musical Big Nate at Adventure Theater in Glen Echo, MD. Lincoln Peirce, the comic strip creator (and a close personal friend of Wimpy Kid's Jeff Kinney) will be at the play and signing books.

Also on Sunday, Marc Tyler Nobleman will be speaking about Batman co-creator Bill Finger at the Washington Hebrew Congregation (3935 Macomb St, NW) from 10:30-12:00 and signing copies of his book Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman.

Again, further afield, Kevin 'Kal' Kallaugher will be speaking at the Walters Museum in Baltimore at 2 pm to launch his new book, Daggers Drawn. The Express has an interview.

And I've interviewed most of the cartoonists mentioned here (and many others) if you want to study up before meeting them.

The dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library this week gave the US media a chance to engage in one of its current favorite pastimes: rehabilitating the public images of thoroughly loathsome and reprehensible public figures. They'd hardly had time to catch their breath after canonizing Margaret Thatcher before it was time for their toughest challenge ever -- rehabilitating George W. "The Decider" Bush. Yeah, that's right, it's Shark Jumping Time.

Y'know the worst thing about this wretched speech, though? He's paraphrasing Bill Clinton, f'cripesake. Between this and the Thatcher veneration and Chelsea Clinton interviewing the GEICO Gecko, I'd say this pretty much indicates the death of the US media.

Gears of War, and HALO figures can be used for non-sealed events WITH the Grenade rules. Assassins Creed figures are eligible for non-sealed events. Prize support from other venues which has not been given out yet at Game On! Comics is not eligible for play. For our venue, Modern Age is defined as anything from the Secret Invasion set forwards unless otherwise specified. Using Unicorns, Polar Bears, or Dinosaurs as objects is not required but is encouraged.        Small Press Review   Comics you may not know about but should!  Jupiter's Legacy #1                       There are some comic book writers who can do no wrong. Mark Millar is one of them. If the first issue of Jupiter's Legacy is anything to go by, this series will soon join the likes of The Ultimates, Kick-Ass and Civil War - to name just a few - as true modern classics from the prolific Scot. However, this feels a lot different to both those and Millar's other recent creator owned titles. Even so, there's no denying that it's still very much a Millarworld comic book; the trademark darkness, humour and "Why has nobody thought of that before?!" ideas are all very much on display here.  Jupiter's Legacy is certainly very topical and Millar makes a smart choice by contrasting the world of 1929 to today. The contrast not only between then and now, but also the superheroes from that Golden Age and their children proves to be fascinating. How would the offspring of the world's greatest superheroes act? How would they fare living in the shadow of their parents, especially when they're still active? These are all questions that the writer sets out to explore and it promises to make for a very interesting read. He also drops in enough mystery to get you hooked, while the tension between Walter and Sheldon looks very promising moving forward. There's an awful lot of story crammed into this first issue and I for one can't wait to see where it goes.  In terms of artwork, Frank Quitely is on top form here and Pete Doherty's muted colours are a perfect fit for this very realistic feeling world. The design of the costumes are all great and Quitely's style is particularly brilliant in a sequence which sees the group of superheroes take down a supervillain in very unique fashion.
