Friday 10/26/12
HALLOWEEN COMIC-FEST
BEDLAM #1 Launch Party with special guests
NICK SPENCER (Morning Glories, Thief of Thieves, Ultimate X-Men)
&
RILEY ROSSMO (Debris, Green Wake, Cowboy Ninja Viking)
Happy Halloween, Third Eye Faithful!

We've got a stacked weekend of Halloween Third Eye fun for you guys, and it all starts on Friday with our HUGE Bedlam launch party with creators NICK SPENCER (Morning Glories, Thief of Thieves, Ultimate X-Men) and RILEY ROSSMO (Green Wake, Debris, Cowboy Ninja Viking).

We're also kicking off Day 1 of Halloween Comic-Fest this Friday, with over a thousand FREE Halloween Comic-Fest comics to give out to YOU!

And, of course, we can't just rot your brains, so we're going to be giving out candy as well! What can I say? We love Halloween here!

Of course, that's not all, we'll be continuing the Halloween festivities with DAY 2 at the ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON: Halloween Special!

This is by far, our favorite season, and we'd love to have you guys, our Third Eye fam, around to celebrate with us!

Read on below for full details on all the festivities!

10/26: 7PM-9PM
*First 20 in Line Get a FREE Mystery Gift!*
BEDLAM #1 Launch Party w/ Nick Spencer & Riley Rossmo

Folks, you've been hearing us rant, rave, and just all around gush over how excited we are about the new IMAGE COMICS series BEDLAM. Now, the release is finally here, and we cannot wait to share this incredible, and innovative new series with you.

What's even cooler is NICK SPENCER and RILEY ROSSMO have made time in their schedules to join us for the release of the book. Nick is flying in from England for this, and Riley is flying in from Canada, so needless to say, we're pretty flattered that they're making the trip to see us here at Third Eye!

Many of you may already know Nick from his work on the incredible IMAGE series, MORNING GLORIES, and many of you are familiar with Riley from his recent work on DEBRIS and GREEN WAKE.

Both of these guys are two of the most talented folks in Image's stable right now, and their new series, BEDLAM, deserves all of the hype and accolades it's been receiving

What's BEDLAM about? Meet Fillmore Press, aka the homicidal masked maniac known as Madder Red. Madder Red was the epitome of evil, as he terrorized the town of BEDLAM for several years, reigning a senseless crusade of crime and violence down upon the citizens there. Women, children, no one was safe from Madder Red. And, then, he was caught... and cured, or at least so he's been told.

Now, released back into society due to some kind of legal loophole, Fillmore can't escape the nightmares of his former crimes, but when a vicious serial murderer is hunting the senior citizens of BEDLAM... he decides to give his life a new meaning: he offers his assistance in tracking the killer to the police.

But, is Fillmore cured? Will these senseless crimes awaken the beast within? That's the question that BEDLAM asks.

Folks: imagine if THE JOKER was cured, and let back into Gotham City. This is what BEDLAM is all about.

If you're a fan of BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE, NEMESIS, IRREDEEMABLE, or STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE, you'll love this book.

Riley's artwork is INCREDIBLE, and brings a nightmarish view of BEDLAM to the reader, while Spencer takes Madder Red to some of the darkest, most depraved corners that we've seen in a comic.

Get the BEDLAM #1 Third Eye Variant Starting Wednesday 10/24
Not only is this comic a fantastic read, but it's also getting tremendous buzz, and you know what that normally means for IMAGE series. Starting Wednesday (today) 10/24, we'll be making our BEDLAM #1 Third Eye variant available to you guys at just $3.50 cover price, so you can snag yourself a copy for the signing this Friday!

This is a custom cover that is only available at our stores, from series artist RILEY ROSSMO, and it features our own little Third Eye mascot wielding some very BEDLAM-y fangs.

10/26 7PM-9PM
Halloween Comic-Fest 2012 Day 1
Also kicking off this Friday is the first ever HALLOWEEN COMIC-FEST. This is an event that is very similar in tone to Free Comic Book Day, but on a slightly smaller scale.

We've worked in collaboration with many of our publishing partners, and they've provided us with hundreds upon hundreds of specially printed Halloween-themed comics for us to give out FREE to you this Friday and Saturday!

Just like the FCBD books are made specially for FCBD, so are these great HCF comics.

We'll be giving out plenty of FREE HCF comics, plenty of candy, and hosting some very special Mystery Sales on select items beginning at 6PM and running until 9PM.

And, of course, this is also happening at the same time as our huge BEDLAM #1 Launch Party with creators NICK SPENCER & RILEY ROSSMO!

Third Eye Comics will be Open 11AM-8PM 10/27 & Celebrating Halloween Comic-Fest during the ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON!
Just a heads up, because we've gotten a few questions: Third Eye will most definitely be open normal hours for the ANNAPOLIS COMIC-CON. City Paper's review of Lichtenstein exhibit

"Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective" At the National Gallery of Art to Jan. 13; Roy Lichtenstein's comic-book Pop art gave him modernist cred, but he was a painter's painter, too.
By Jeffry Cudlin • October 19, 2012
http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/articles/43354/roy-lichtenstein-a-retrospective-reviewed-roy-lichtenstein-helped-establish-pop/

Cudlin wraps up his review talking about comics, "One sour note: The names of the comics artists that Lichtenstein borrowed from in the mid-'60s—people like Tony Abruzzo, Irv Novick, and Jack Kirby—are not mentioned in the show's wall text..." and ComicsDC readers should check out his conclusions.

Cartoonists Rights Network supports editorial cartoon contest

Draw Attention to Impunity: IFEX launches the International Day to End Impunity Editorial Cartoon Contest

im·pu·ni·ty \im-'pyü-nÉ™-tÄ“\ n. without punishment, without consequences

Attention all cartoonists!  Help us draw the world's attention by creating an editorial cartoon about impunity. IFEX, an international network of free expression groups, is launching an editorial cartoon contest.  Titled the Draw Attention to Impuniity: Editorial Cartoon Contest, this cartoon contest will be part of the second annual International Day to End Impunity on November 23, 2012.  The deadline for entries is November 4, 2012.  Some of the entries will be featured on the International Day to End Impunity website, and the top three winners will receive cash prizes.

Journalists, photographers, musicians, writers, human rights defenders and others continue to be sued, threatened, attacked and even murdered with impunity in countries like Mexico, Russia, Iraq and Somalia for simply practicing their right to free expression.  In our free expression community, impunity consistently ranks among the top concerns and remains a global issue that has defied all borders and political structures.
IFEX, based in Toronto, Canada, is the most extensive community of leaders defending and promoting freedom of expression around the world.  The Cartoonists Rights Network International is a proud member of IFEX.  Executive Director Robert Russell and Deputy Director Drew Rougier-Chapman will be two of the judges on the panel which will consist entirely of IFEX affiliated indivduals who are fighting for free speech rights.

Steve Artley retires from editorial cartooning (UPDATED)

Mere weeks after he helped organize the Annual Association of Editorial Cartoonist's annual meeting in Washington, DC, 2nd generation editorial cartoonist Steve Artley has just announced on his Facebook page that he's retiring from doing them -

Steven George Artley updated his status: "My editorial cartoons are no more. I am done, finished, kaput. Earlier today, I stepped down from the Alexandria Times. I guess it's time to try something else. What that something else may be, I don't know. Anyway, thanks to those of you who "liked" my work and left supportive comments."

In the following discussion, Steve (who is a friend of mine) also noted, he was "Tired of being an invisible Quixote. Feel like no one is out there. I make a sound and all I get back is my own echo. Or, I'm a ghost. I cast no shadow. There's no indication of measurable readership, no following, no community support... I get virtually no feedback, 'cept for the occasional hate mail. All that tells me it's time to go."

"Coincidentally, when I called my editor today, he said the mayor had just called, asking "who is that guy?" Meaning me, of course, who drew the local issue cartoon that portrayed him as an anthropomorphized bulldozer. I HAVE BEEN THERE FOR FOUR FREAKIN' YEARS, MISTER MAYOR!!!! And only NOW, you notice I'm there? This all underscores that I made the right decision."

District Comics next weekend!

It's getting close! We are now up to TWELVE writers and artists appearing at our signing event for District Comics at our Washington DC store! More info is below!

It's also only a week and a half until Halloween, which falls on Wednesday this year, so it is also time for Halloween ComicFest! Stop by any of our stores to pick up some Halloween themed comic books to give away to trick or treaters! The publishers started this up a few years ago as a second big event for the comics year, much like Free Comic Book Day, where they publish a group of Halloween comics that stores can distribute so that more people are getting some good comics! This year we have comics from Johnny Boo to Axe Cop to Batman to Adventure Time! Come in and grab some to make sure your trick or treaters think you are the coolest house on the block on Halloween! Here's a picture of some of the comics! http://www.halloweencomicfest.com/Home/1/1/78/1147

We are also proud to be partnering with the brand new arthouse movie theater in Merrifield, Virginia, close to our Vienna store, the Angelika Film Center! In addition to showing new films, they are having some events of special interest to us! This Sunday they started free showings of the new season of The Walking Dead new season on Sunday nights, and they will do After Hours retro movies every Friday and Saturday night. This week they are showing Labyrinth! More info below!

Feel free to forward on our newsletter, and please send us any comments or mailing list requests to vienna@bigplanetcomics.com

Thanks!

I am honored to be the guest blogger this week at Today's Inspiration. For years it has been one of my favorite sites, and blogmaster Leif Peng is one of the true champions of the art of illustration. I hope you'll visit this great site and read my post on Heinrich Kley (which includes some nifty art from my recent books). Thanks!

Keeping up with Cyborg Richard Thompson's treatment part 5

First message from Richard Thompson post-brain surgery!:

"Hey guys, you gotta ret this. It's delightful."

Okay, the latest is that RT is resting comfortably, more alert than you think - more for you tomorrow.

Thank you so much for the warm thoughts and kind words...he will see and hear all of it, I promise.

New Update: Richard Thompson was moved to his room, finally and had an otherwise uneventful night and a good breakfast this morning. Strength in the extremities is good, he's alert, his voice is still very soft and he can only speak in rhymes. The last part I made up.

If all continues to evolve smoothly, he will be, remarkably, released later today.

Keeping up with Cyborg Richard Thompson's treatment part 4

Nick Galifianakis wrote at about 5 pm:

Richard is doing well enough to be released from the recovery room but there isn't a room available for him yet in the neuro ICU.

His vitals are all good (although he keeps setting off the low-heart-rate alarm because he has the resting heartrate of a hibernating whale). He's hungry but they haven't signed off on him having solids yet. Ginger ale is the only treat.

He currently looks like a Buddhist monk.

Meanwhile, Amy Thompson says:

Richard is awake and looks a little bit like a very skinny Dalai Lama. One of the first things he told me (other than it was the weirdest thing he'd ever been through) was that the neurosurgeon told him he had a very active thalamus. We think that's a good thing.
