"When Richard Thompson, the creator of the comic strip Cul de Sac, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, his friend Chris Sparks began a fundraising effort to honor his friend. With Richard's support, he asked others to donate artwork featuring the Cul de Sac characters for a Team Cul de Sac book with proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson's Research. Now, join Chris Sparks and other members of Team Cul de Sac including Steve Conley, Matt Dembicki, SL Gallant, Roger Langridge, and others as they discuss the book, Richard Thompson's work, and their continuing efforts to raise funds in Richard's name." - from the program book. The panel also included Carolyn Belefski, Dawn Griffin, Donna Lewis, Joe Sutliff and was moderated by Mike Rhode.
2 lectures on Chicano art and superhero influences in September
José Alaniz (2012 Smithsonian Latino Studies Senior Fellow from the University of Washington, Seattle) will deliver two lectures on the project he spent the summer researching at the American Art Museum archives and other venues.

Small Press Expo announces the Enoch Pratt Free Library as the recipient of the 2012 SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program

Bethesda, Maryland; September 6, 2012 – The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of graphic novels, independent comics and alternative political cartoons, is pleased to to announce the gift of $5000 in graphic novels to the Enoch Pratt Free Library of Baltimore, Maryland.
In a ceremony held Tuesday in the boardroom of the main branch of the Pratt Library in downtown Baltimore, SPX Executive Director Warren Bernard presented CEO Dr. Carla Hayden and members of her staff with the books.
"We are so honored and delighted that Small Press Expo has chosen the Pratt Library as this year's recipient of their Graphic Novel Gift," said Carla D. Hayden, Chief Executive Officer of the Enoch Pratt Free Library. "It's important to emphasize that reading is fun. Sometimes students get so busy they forget that there's more to reading than just school texts."
This years gift of over 240 books comprising 40 different titles were chosen by the Pratt Library Collection Management Department and will be sent out to all the branches in the system.
SPX would like to thank Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Top Shelf for their aid in supporting this important program.
The SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program is an expansion of the philanthropic and charitable endeavors that are part of its corporate charter, and is in addition to SPX's annual support to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The targets of this program are public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area as selected by the Small Press Expo.
The goals of this new program are:
- Facilitate the availability of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
- Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
- Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.
This years special bookplate contains art by artist and illustrator Adrian Tomine, whose work graces the covers of The New Yorker. The special bookplate were placed on all of the books donated by SPX. I ran across this photograph at work today. The comic books visible are all Dell - Donald Duck, Porky Pig, Tarzan and Tweety & Sylvester. Note the spinner rack says Buy Approved Comics and has a picture of the Comic Code Authority seal. Also note there's a girl reading the comics, but she moved when the picture was taken so we can't tell what she's looking at.

If you did not participate in the past, whether as a fan or an exhibitor, you missed a lot—don't be left out in 2012. 2011 was another terrific year for the show. Attendance was over 3,000 attendees and exhibitors, along with dozens of printers, distributors, retailers, and other industry professionals.
There were over 450 people registered as exhibitors and we sold over 170 exhibitor tables. SPX has a unique format of only selling exhibitor space to independent publishers and not to retailers. This provides a very intimate and friendly atmosphere for our creators and fans to mingle. At the same time, there's a wide array of programming for all to enjoy.
