National Public Radio (NPR) on Comics & Cartoons: A Beginning Bibliography A-D

After the stunning success of my posting of an index of films and television based on comics, I thought I'd stick up another one of my long-term projects, which I think is already online at Michigan State but wildly out-of-date.

National Public Radio (NPR) on Comics & Cartoons: A Beginning Bibliography

NPR has done many interviews relating to comics and cartoons in the 1990s and this bibliography begins a listing of them. For a short time, NPR even produced and aired a radio show based on a comic strip - Ben Katchor's "Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer", starring Jerry Stiller as Julius. Radio used to be an ephemeral medium - possibly saved as a recording, but perhaps only in the hands of a private collector. Thanks to the Internet, it has become easy to find a transcript or recording of a show. NPR offers both, sometimes for free. This bibliography was mostly compiled using NPR's website search engine, but not all shows seem to appear on the site and I have been able to list a few from other sources. Many of the programs can be heard on www.npr.org. Tapes and transcripts can be ordered from their toll-free number: 1-877-NPR-TEXT (1-877-677-8398) or for international calls: (+801)374-102. By mail, write to NPR c/o Burrelle's Transcripts, P.O. Box 7, Livingston, New Jersey 07039-0007. Be warned that the cost is not insignificant.

All of these citations will be, and many others from different sources already are, listed in the Comics Research Bibliography by John Bullough & Mike Rhode available on line at: http://www.rpi.edu/~bulloj/comxbib.html. Comics Stuff is an occasional publication showcasing aspects of comics collecting and indexing beyond the comic book and toy price guides. New additions marked with *.

Post censors comics again (so what else is new?)

Tom Spurgeon picked up the story that Berkeley Breathed's Opus was being censored by the Washington Post, as the cartoonist reported himself on his website. Breathed suggests going over to Salon (owned by the Post, iirc) and reading the strip on the next two Sundays. Somebody remind me, please.

Here's what Breathed posted (including that picture up there):

Note to Opus readers: The Opus strips for August 26 and September 2 have been withheld from publication by a large number of client newspapers across the country, including Opus' host paper The Washington Post. The strips may be viewed in a large format on their respective dates at Salon.com.

Longtime (hah!) readers may recall my earlier post on the Post's frequent censoring (and not mentioning it) of comic strips. If the Post wasn't one of the best papers in America, this probably wouldn't matter as much...

...although I'm not sure about that.

UPDATE: See the bigger picture at "Many Won't Run Next Two 'Opus' Strips With Sex Joke, Islam References" by Dave Astor, E and P Online August 24, 2007.

Guy and Rod of Brevity on Post chat UPDATED

Meet the Comics Pages

Guy and Rodd
Cartoonists -- "Brevity"
Friday, August 24, 2007; 1:00 PM

Join Washington Post Comics page editor Suzanne Tobin on Friday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. ET for a discussion with "Brevity" cartoonists Guy and Rodd.

From the cartoonists' official site:
Guy and Rodd make movies by day and create the single panel comic "Brevity" any chance they get. They met as producers at The Ant Farm, where they worked on campaigns for films such as "Sin City," "Anchorman," "The Lord or the Rings" trilogy, "King Kong" and "The Chronicles of Narnia."

------------------

I got a few questions in, while watching a researcher flip through WW1 newspapers.

--------------------
IJOCA, VA: Since this was a webcomic, is it drawn electronically? Or old-style and then scanned in?

Guy and Rodd: Rodd: I create the comic in a 3D application called Maya from a rotating cast of pre-built human characters, chickens and such. I then create a vector map and down-res the image to 2-D which, unfortunately for now, is all that newspapers can handle.

Webcomics are lame.

_______________________

IJOCA, VA: Do you pitch cartoons anywhere else? BEK and Duffy have panels in the NY'r while still doing their strips, while Bliss has gone the other way w/a panel in the paper.

Guy and Rodd: Yes.

We pitch our cartoons to BEK who never writes his own stuff anymore.

Suzanne Tobin: For those who are not New Yorker readers, BEK is Bruce Eric Kaplan, a cartoonist who is also a screenwriter. He did an episode for "Seinfeld" about Elaine's obsession with a New Yorker cartoon. He also wrote for HBO's "Six Feet Under" and served as the Executive Producer during its final season.

Duffy is J.C. Duffy, also a New Yorker cartoonist, as well as creator of the comic strips, "The Fusco Brothers" and "Go Fish."

_______________________

IJOCA, VA: How many papers are you in? What did you start with?

Guy and Rodd: We started with 54. We have a little over 500 now.

_______________________

My last question - "Do you have any plans to continue the panel post-humously?" didn't make it in before the session ended.

The Caped Crusader from Vermont

Dana Milbank's got a story in today's Post on Senator Patrick Leahy's well-known fondness for Batman.

OT: What's wrong with this picture?

Here's an ad that ran in the New York Times Book Review this weekend, on August 19th. What's wrong with the ad?

It's the "Original 1960s comic-book art" blurb. Wolverine, on the cover, first appeared in 1974. This appears to be artwork by John Byrne, probably from the early 1980s.

So remember, kids! Don't get your comic-book history from pop-up books!

OT: Film & TV Adaptations of Comics - SOURCES & BIBLIOGRAPHY

SOURCES & BIBLIOGRAPHY: (Additional article and movie review citations can be found in the Comics Research Bibliography (CRB) at http://www.rpi.edu/~bulloj/search/FILM.html)

With the current (2003) profusion of comic book movies and tv shows, this area has not been updated as well as I would like. At the end are appended some notes about other material that exists. A search of the CRB would also reveal post-2000 articles and books.
