Program Type:

Author Event
  • Registration is required for this event.
  • Registration will close on December 6, 2025 @ 2:00pm.

Program Description

Event Details

Author and artist Sophia Glock discusses her YA graphic memoir, Passport, about growing up overseas -- and discovering that her parents work for the CIA.

Come learn about Sophia's creative process, and how she went from writing fairy tale comics to drawing a memoir of growing up internationally in a family full of secrets. She will discuss how she draws, writes, and mines her life for ideas for both long-form comics such as Passport, as well as shorter cartoons for publications such as The New Yorker. Sophia celebrates the power of comics as devices for deep connection and storytelling, and delves into how to develop a point of view when writing complicated personal histories.

This event is co-hosted with Bards Alley Bookshop. Copies of the author's book will be available for sale at the program or you can reserve copies by calling Bards Alley at 571-459-2653. A book signing will follow the author talk.

About the Book: Passport

Young Sophia has lived in so many different countries, she can barely keep count. Stationed now with her family in Central America because of her parents' work, Sophia feels displaced as an American living abroad, when she has hardly spent any of her life in America. Everything changes when she reads a letter she was never meant to see and uncovers her parents' secret. They are not who they say they are; they are working for the CIA. As Sophia tries to make sense of this news, and the web of lies surrounding her, she begins to question everything. The impact that this has on Sophia's emerging sense of self and understanding of the world makes for a page-turning exploration of lies and double lives. In the hands of this extraordinary graphic storyteller, this astonishing true story bursts to life.

About the Author

Sophia Glock is a cartoonist and the author of the graphic memoir Passport as well as the forthcoming Before We Wake (February 2026). Her comics and cartoons have been published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Buzzfeed, Narratively, and Time Out New York. She currently lives and draws in Virginia.

  • Oct 30: Kayla E at GMU

    Author/Illustrator Kayla E.: PRECIOUS RUBBISH
    Thursday, October 30, 4:45pm - 6:30pm
@ GMU Center for the Arts, 4373 Mason Pond Dr., Fairfax

Join us at George Mason University's Center for the Arts for an upcoming Visual Voices presentation with author and illustrator Kayla E. Zoom link also available day-of for those registered. She will be discussing her most recent release Precious Rubbish, a landmark graphic novel debut and groundbreaking work of trauma recollection told in the style of post-war children's comics.

Bards Alley will be on-site selling copies of the book for Kayla to sign after her talk.

About PRECIOUS RUBBISH: Kayla E.'s Precious Rubbish is an experimental graphic memoir drawn in a style that references the aesthetics of mid-century children's comics and tells the story of a childhood shaped by maternal emotional dysregulation, rural poverty, and incest. The author's childhood is portrayed as a collection of short-form comics and gag panels punctuated by interactive elements like paper dolls, satirical advertisements, games, and puzzles.

While the work is concerned with violence and a particularly Texan brand of Pentecostal fanaticism, it is presented in a playful visual language with a deadpan humor that elevates the material beyond mere graphic memoir. Precious Rubbish is a landmark work of comics storytelling and graphic medicine.

The debut graphic novel asks the reader to do the extratextual work of filling out narrative gaps, which mirrors the challenge of trauma recollection. The reader is invited to co-labor in the meaning-making process, an exercise that facilitates an intimacy (between the author, the subject, and the reader) that is at once horrifying and hilarious.

About the author: Kayla E. (she/her) is an award-winning Texas-born artist. She works as creative director at Fantagraphics and is a recipient of a 2023-2024 Princeton Hodder Fellowship. She is the co-founder and former President of Nat. Brut Inc., a non-profit that produces an art and literary magazine, of which she was the Editor-in-Chief for nine years. She earned her B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University, where she served as the Art Director for the Harvard Lampoon. Precious Rubbish, her graphic novel debut, is a work of trauma recollection told in the style of post-war children's comics. Kayla lives in North Carolina with her wife and two dogs.

    Flugennock's Latest'n'Greatest: "Globalize Intifada"

    "Globalize Intifada"
    https://sinkers.org/stage/?p=4197

C'mon, folks. It says what it says, right there in the Declaration,
second paragraph: "throw off". Yeah, that's right — Intifada.
When the clampdown comes down, you throw it off by any means necessary.
And if you think popular uprising against oppression is "terrorism",
maybe it's because you're the terrorist.

It's time to globalize the throwing off.
    It's time to Globalize Intifada.

Santa Rosa Press Democrat considering adding Cul de Sac to current comics page

    Read the story here -
DD says, "The paper is giving comic fans the choice of six comic strips – Arctic Circle, Crabgrass, Cul de Sac, Dumplings, Macanudo, and Sherman's Lagoon."

My comment on the Daily Cartoonist site is "As much as I love him, and his strip, there's no way Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac should be considered for this. It's not even a zombie comic strip. He's been gone for years now, and the comics page should belong to living cartoonists."

Oct 26: Cara Gormally at Mary Riley Styles Public Library

    From Bard's Alley newsletter.

Happy new release day! The books featured below are just a sample of what's available at Bards Alley. For more new releases and staff picks, visit our Bookshop.org page. You can reserve a title for in-store pick-up by calling (571) 459-2653.

    SNIP

Then, on Sunday, October 26, we're excited to collaborate with Falls Church City Schools Pride Alliance on another thought-provoking local author event.

Cara Gormally, a biology professor at D.C.'s Gallaudet University as well as an artist, will be at Mary Riley Styles Public Library to discuss their debut graphic memoir Everything Is Fine, I'll Just Work Harder. It depicts the author's struggle to process the trauma of sexual assault through therapy, recalling Alison Bechdel's Fun Home with its dry humor, spare visuals, and nuanced portrait of queer self-discovery.

A book signing will follow the talk; copies can be purchased on site or reserved for pick-up at the event by calling (571) 459-2653. Free registration is requested, though not required, through Mary Riley Styles Public Library.

    Mark Redfield, RIP

    From Mark Wheatley...

My friend and collaborator on a number of projects, Mark Redfield, passed away October 19th after a long struggle with the effects of a heart attack this past spring. Mark was that rare kind of creator who had a head for business and knew how to organize and run projects. We got along great. We spoke the same language. I'm going to miss his inspiration and innovative ideas. But I am so pleased that he's no longer suffering. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and many fans.

Profs and Pints DC presents: "Cartoonists Under Siege," on the rich history and uncertain future of political cartooning, with Kevin "KAL" Kallaugher, award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Economist, former artist in residence at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and frequent speaker at universities.

It's a tumultuous time to be a political cartoonist, with those who hold such a job title struggling to weather the failure of newspapers as well as pressure and threats stemming from the overall degradation of public discourse. Yet, meanwhile, the appetite for satire is exploding.

How did we get to this point? What does the future hold for the artists whose irreverent takes on the issues of the day have long stirred and informed political debate?

Hear such questions tackled by Kevin Kallaugher, an international award-winning political cartoonist widely known by the pen name KAL, who previously worked for The Baltimore Sun, continues to maintain a repository of his work at Kaltoons.com, and routinely speaks at prestigious higher-education institutions such as Harvard and Columbia.

In a copiously illustrated lecture he'll take you through the history of the cartoon craft, showing how irreverent illustrations in 18th century England and France paved the way for the caustic caricatures of today. He'll introduce you to influential caricaturists like Paris's Honore Daumier and New York's Al Hirschfeld and offer insights into the social skills required to excel in this ancient art.

Kallaugher will walk his audience through the unique set of challenges currently facing him and his colleagues. They include a new media landscape in which upstart media platforms have siphoned audiences away from the legacy media, the traditional home for cartoonists. On top of that, an increasingly threatening political environment has put satirists in crosshairs and political cartoonists face competition from Artificial Intelligence programs that feed, without pay or credit, off artists' work.

We'll look at how cartoonists are adapting and at the future prospects for visual satire. The lecture will close out with a live demonstration of how Kallaugher draws prominent public personalities. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)
