'Activismo Ilustrado'

by Matt Dembicki

I had the good fortune of attending the Guadalajara International Book Fair Nov. 28-Dec. 4 in Mexico. Later this week I'll post some photos and a few comments, but I was lucky enough to land an interview with Mural newspaper about the environment/nature-themed comics that I do.

They're selling neat prints and cards today. The piece they did for Team Cul de Sac was one of my favorites.

Dec 2: Andrew Cohen's Open Studio Event

Andrew Cohen writes in:

I have a small drawing space at 52 O Street Studios, and on Wednesday, December 2, from 5-9 pm, the building is having an open studio / holiday fair event. Amongst all the artists opening their doors, I'll be selling comics in Studio LL3, where people can stop by, see some comics being made, look at some original art, and browse some funny books. I'll have comics like "Howzit Funnies" for sale, as well as copies of my grandfather's book (for which I did the illustrations), "Reflections on Martha's Vineyard". I also hope to have a new story, "Don't Even Need the Razor Blades," printed up and on sale. It's a winter-themed tale, and makes a perfect stocking stuffer for when the Prozac runs out.

The official release ...

The artist of 52 O Street Studios invite the public to come explore the most creative warehouse in DC! Enjoy the festivities as you meander through the cooridors of this historic building. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the artists' work spaces, meet a wide range of artists and arts professionals from a range of backgrounds and disciplines, and to see and purchase artists' most recent works fresh from the site of creation.
Since its inception in 1978, 52 O Street has been an integral part of the DC arts community. Come explore the most creative warehouse in DC!

This years open studios will include the workspaces of painters: Kelly Towles and Katie Pumphrey; Jewelry designers: Poppyor and Kicheko; Natural skincare curator, Beck Wadell of Be Clean Shop; the communal workspace of Workspace Locale; Accessory Designers: Mint Lola and DeNada; Goldsmiths, Instructors, and students work from JewelryclassDC; Andrew Cohen, Caitlin Price, Cadence Archer, and others!

Conveniently located a short walk from the NOMA Metro Station on the Red Line, 52 O Street is just west of North Capitol Street.

"The Art of Richard Thompson"

Politics and Prose Bookstore Jan 14, 2015
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGCfTorlJ3k

Named the Outstanding Cartoonist of 2010 by the National Cartoonists Society, Richard Thompson is best known for his syndicated series, Cul de Sac. But his work encompasses much more, and in this colorful career retrospective, six of his peers present the different facets of Thompson's art. Join Galifianakis, Washington Post cartoonist and author of If You Loved Me, You'd Think This Was Cute, Weingarten, Pulitzer-winning journalist who writes The Washington Post's "Below the Beltway" column, and Apatoff, an illustration scholar whose recent work includes a biography of illustrator Robert Fawcett. They will be interviewed by Michael Cavna, writer, artist, and lapsed cartoonist now producing The Washington Post's "Comic Riffs." (Andrews McMeel)

SPX 2015 Panel - It's a Small, Small, Small Press World

There's nothing more satisfying than selling the small press comics you've poured your heart, sweat, and tears into throughout the years. Join Lara Antal (So What? Press), Box Brown (Retrofit), Francois Vigneault (Study Group Comics), and Kevin Czap (Czap Books) for a riveting discussion on what it takes to publish a run of your comics and then others' art as well. Moderated by Isaac Cates.
