Beeler's caricatures

I saw Nate Beeler today, and he says that he's doing caricatures for the Examiner chain. Three caricatures a week, one each for the Washington, Baltimore and San Francisco editions, published on the new Sunday paper. You can see the first ones on his blog now - the one I've lifted is DC Mayor Fenty.

Which led to finding this link to American University's alumni magazine for you gentle readers - "Drawn to Washington: Editorial cartoonist for the Washington Examiner, Nate Beeler '02 has a ringside seat for D.C.'s political circus," by Adrienne Frank, American (Spring 2008): 26-27. I don't know why he doesn't tell me about these things - maybe it's the new baby. By the way, the Examiner started running his work in color this past week.

Nate Beeler had a nice cartoon in the Examiner - the baby's not keeping him completely away from the drawing board apparently.

Editorial cartoonist Nate Beeler spawns more than vitriolic wit

Nate and his wife Eve have a new son, Maxwell (Max) Owen Beeler as of April 18th. Congratulations, folks! I knew this was imminent, and was watching the Examiner to see if a whole week went by without one of Nate's cartoons, but I'm not sure if he skipped or not. I think he might have, but he had at least one in the week after Max was born - now that's a true cartoonist. Or freelancer. I get confused sometime.

Nate Beeler wins Virginia Press Association award

Today's Examiner is reporting that Nate Beeler won the the Virginia Press Association's first place in editorial cartooning on Sunday. The formal award appears to be "Best in Show for Daily Art" but I can't find it on either the Examiner or the VPA website. In any event, congratulations, Nate!

Today, I saw more of Willard Mullin's art than I ever will again. Politico editorial cartoonist Matt Wuerker, Washington Examiner editorial cartoonist Nate Beeler and myself admired Warren's collection of sports cartoonist Willard Mullin's work, including pages of original art. Bits from the Examiner

Today's paper has The Best of Beeler 2007 in it, 5 cartoons. I don't think I agree w/ the editor's choices, but check it out and see what you think.

Also, Sam and Max was a comic book back in the day, and it was selected as the year's #1 videogame on page 21.

Nate Beeler featured in Cagle newsletter

As we mentioned, Nate Beeler of the Examiner is now syndicated by Cagle. Today was the second time he was the featured cartoonist in Cagle's email newsletter.

Nate Beeler goes national

Nate's emailed me that he's signed a syndication deal with Darryl Cagle's Cagle Cartoon syndicate and written about it on his blog. Congratulations, Nate. For those who don't pick up the Examiner regularly, Nate's cartoons are one of the best things in it.

Nate's picture is grinning from the weird wrap-around advertising for their website that the Examiner put on today's papers. So, they pick the most interesting picture for the cover they can, to attract attention in a town with ohhh, five free papers, I think, and then put a wrap-around ad over it. Nate's on the back as part of The Examiner News Team and Partners. His shortcut is Cartoons.

He did have a good bash at Al Gore in today's paper.

Nate Beeler's Golden Spike

Washington Examiner political cartoonist Nate Beeler won this year's AAEC Golden Spike award for a cartoon that didn't run. Daryl Cagle just posted the cartoon with Nate's comment on his blog - it's the August 9th entry. Nate's published cartoons can be seen here on his blog as well.

I didn't go to the AAEC wards, but R.C. Harvey did, and in his new Rants & Raves column says it was won by Nate Beeler of the Washington Examiner for a 'cartoon [that] depicted GeeDubya saying that “artificial deadlines embolden the enemy,” accompanied by a drawing of several soldiers with artificial limbs, which also embolden the enemy.' The Golden Spike is presented for the best cartoon a newspaper refuses to run.

Nate's work can be seen every other day or so in the Examiner and there's an original cartoon of his in the Katzen exhibit, Bush Leaguers.

David Petersen interview online

David Petersen's interviewed in The Lord of the Cheese: 'Mouse Guard' by Scott Rosenberg at Readexpress.com (June 13, 2007).

I ran into Scott today and he said that a couple more interviews are forthcoming.

Also his compadre Nate Beeler has an absolutely awesome political cartoon in today's Examiner. You've got to love that Gitmo Frankenstein.

Finally, both free papers, the Examiner and the Express ran the same Associated Press article by Frazier Moore on the new Comedy Central animated series, Li'l Bush. One could probably find the article through either of the above links fairly easily.
