Dana Jeri Maier's Unhealthy Obsessions Opens Sept 27 at Dwightmess

Upcoming Exhibition,"Unhealthy Obsessions"
Puts the Chaotic Mastery of Cartoonist Dana Jeri Maier on Display

SILVER SPRING, MD— DWIGHTMESS Cartooning & Comic Arts, a gallery devoted to experimental and cutting-edge independent comics and illustration, is excited to announce its fall exhibition for 2024, "Unhealthy Obsessions," a survey of drawings by Washington, D.C. based artist Dana Jeri Maier.

In "Unhealthy Obsessions," Maier presents a large sampling of her work, which include meditations on creativity, art, art history, and modern life executed with a sophisticated wit and unique voice all her own.

From the artist:

"Many creative people will tell you that they seldom feel "done" with their work. This can be the best and worst quality in an artist. Sometimes it leads to the greatest artistic achievements known to man (notorious perfectionists Stanley Kubrick and Chris Ware, say), other times it leads to failure (e.g., all of the artists you've never heard of because they couldn't get their sh*t together and finish anything).

So how do artists finally know when there's nothing more to add? For that matter, when do we know if an idea is even worth pursuing in the first place? Do some bad ideas just need time to breathe for them to evolve into not-terrible ones? When is doing the same thing over and over honing your craft, and when is it a way to avoid making hard decisions, or trying new things?

These are unanswerable questions—or at least best examined on a case-by-case basis—but I've always found them interesting, and are ones I seek to ask in Unhealthy Obsessions. Your mileage may vary on what the answers are."

Dana Jeri Maier is an American artist and cartoonist. She is the author of Skip to the Fun Parts: Cartoons and Complaints About Creativity. She has been a contributor to the New Yorker Shouts & Murmurs since 2018.
