Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis provides a vivid account of his lifelong struggle for civil rights in his new comic book-style memoir "March," the first in a trilogy of graphic novels the congressman is writing about his remarkable personal history.
Rooted in Lewis's personal story, "March" reflects on the highs and lows of the broader civil rights movement.
Lewis was inspired early in his life by the activism surrounding the Montgomery bus boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In those pivotal moments, he made a decision to become a part of the civil rights movement.
As a young man, Lewis participated in sit-ins, Freedom Ride protests, led the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and was a keynote speaker at the March on Washington in 1963. He was elected to Congress in 1986, representing Georgia's 5th Congressional District.
"March" co-author Andrew Aydin will also discuss his involvement with the book.
A book signing will follow the event.
