Wish I could say it was recent. But it's been at least a couple of years now. We started running a sudoku puzzle in that space, figuring that the sudoku craze would be good for maybe another year (it can't go on forever, right?) ... but each January, when we've attempted to start the new year without a sudoku puzzle in that coveted spot previously graced by gag cartoons, the sudoku junkies come out of the woodwork and I get hundreds of angry emails and letters. Unfortunately, the response wasn't nearly as swift or passionate when we stopped running the cartoons. But my hope is, whenever sudoku FINALLY peaks, and even the seasoned puzzle fans no longer seek it out, that we'll once again have single-panel gag cartoons back within our pages. Let's keep our fingers crossed, at least!
Thanks, Casey. I'm sorry I didn't notice sooner. We get a lot of papers in the house (6 or so?) and I get mixed up with what is in each paper's magazine.
