Sept 22: Malaka Gharib in Nashville

IN STORE: Malaka Gharib, author of It Won't Always Be Like This, in conversation with Yurina Yoshikawa

Parnassus Books is pleased to welcome Malaka Gharib to celebrate her new graphic memoir, It Won't Always Be Like This, in conversation with Yurina Yoshikawa.

This is a free event which will take place IN STORE on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:30pm Central Time. Because space will be limited, registration is required to attend this event. Please register for free by filling out the form below! (Note: If for any reason you need to cancel your registration, please call the store at 615-953-2243 at least 24 hours before the event so your space can be provided to another guest.) Masks are strongly encouraged during this event.

About the Book

An intimate graphic memoir about an American girl growing up with her Egyptian father's new family, forging unexpected bonds and navigating adolescence in an unfamiliar country--from the award-winning author of I Was Their American Dream.

"What a joy it is to read Malaka Gharib's It Won't Always Be Like This, to have your heart expertly broken and put back together within the space of a few panels, to have your wonder in the world restored by her electric mind."--Mira Jacob, author of Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations

It's hard enough to figure out boys, beauty, and being cool when you're young, but even harder when you're in a country where you don't understand the language, culture, or social norms.

Nine-year-old Malaka Gharib arrives in Egypt for her annual summer vacation abroad and assumes it'll be just like every other vacation she's spent at her dad's place in Cairo. But her father shares news that changes everything: He has remarried. Over the next fifteen years, as she visits her father's growing family summer after summer, Malaka must reevaluate her place in his life. All that on top of maintaining her coolness!

Malaka doesn't feel like she fits in when she visits her dad--she sticks out in Egypt and doesn't look anything like her fair-haired half siblings. But she adapts. She learns that Nirvana isn't as cool as Nancy Ajram, that there's nothing better than a Fanta and a melon-mint hookah, and that her new stepmother, Hala, isn't so different from Malaka herself.

It Won't Always Be Like This is a touching time capsule of Gharib's childhood memories--each summer a fleeting moment in time--and a powerful reflection on identity, relationships, values, family, and what happens when it all collides.

About the Author

Malaka Gharib is a writer, journalist, and cartoonist. She is the author of I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir, winner of an Arab American Book Award and named one of the best books of the year by NPR, The Washington PostKirkus Reviews, and the New York Public Library. By day, she works on NPR's science desk, covering the topic of global health and development. Her comics, zines, and writing have been published in NPR, CatapultThe Seventh Wave Magazine, The NibThe Believer, and The New Yorker. She lives in Nashville with her husband, Darren, and her dog, Sheeboo.

Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out Exhibit Opens at National Children's Museum in Downtown DC This Fall

From September 24, 2022 - January 8, 2023, families will recognize, explore, and express emotions through hands-on experiences inspired by the hit animated film

WASHINGTON – This fall and winter, prepare for a joy-filled family experience! Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out, the first interactive exhibit based on Disney and Pixar's hit animated feature Inside Out, arrives at National Children's Museum on September 24, 2022.

Visitors are invited to interact with hands-on and digital exhibit features that demonstrate the important role emotions, memory, and imagination play in our everyday lives. Experiences focus on the five emotions featured in the award-winning film: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Through hands-on, playful experiences, children and their families learn to recognize emotions and explore how they are expressed and managed.

Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out will be open for play at National Children's Museum from September 24, 2022 - January 8, 2023.

"At a time when social-emotional learning is needed more than ever, this exhibit is an incredible opportunity for children and families to explore emotions and build communication skills together," said Crystal Bowyer, President + CEO of National Children's Museum. "The Museum is thrilled to host Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out this fall."

The exhibit was developed by Children's Museum of Pittsburgh in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios.

In this exhibit, visitors can:
  • Step into Headquarters to explore the range and intensity of emotions at the Control Panel.
  • Explore some of the ways we show how we feel with our faces and bodies at the Emotions Mirrors.
  • Think about an important memory and how it made them feel—or show how they're feeling currently by creating a glowing Memory Sphere.
  • Use their imagination to create a story and perform it at Dream Productions.
  • Work to keep the train on track—what feelings do you have when you control and balance the Train of Thought?
  • Explore how emotions work together as they stack and balance the Emotion Blocks.
The Emotions at Play with Pixar's Inside Out exhibit is included in the cost of Museum admission. Tickets to the Museum are $15.95 for adults and children 1 and older and are free for children under 1 and Museum members. For more information about the exhibit at National Children's Museum, please visit www.nationalchildrensmuseum.org/visting-exhibit-hall.

Located at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW off the Woodrow Wilson Plaza, National Children's Museum is open 9:30 am - 4:30 pm every day except Tuesdays.
