Here's another new acquisition from a library sale. I'd never heard of Emett before, but his book
Far Twittering was in the expensive section so I took a look. The book is all reprint drawings from Punch.
And there was the reason - this lovely sketch by Pietro Lazzari (see Chris Brown's comment below).
Punch imploded for the 2nd time in 2002, but you can still find collections of their cartoons easily.
Ooh, nice find! I always liked the little of Emmet I've seen, some of it's Rube Goldbergian machinery with an English accent. He designed the contraptions in the movie version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and for years there's been a Rowland Emmet lunar rover on display in the Air & Space Museum (I guess it's still there).
ReplyDeleteCan you tell who did the sketch? It's not Emmet is it?
I mean "Emett".
ReplyDeleteI thought it was Emett - the thin line looked like the same as in the book's art. The caption reads

as far as i can tell.
Aha! He's the guy I've been trying to think of for years with that lunar rover. I got him confused with one of the newer New Yorker artists for a while...
ReplyDeleteI read, probably in Searle's biography, an anecdote about Searle being mistaken for Emett by a photographer or someone, and it made him very mad.
ReplyDeleteThe artist for the drawing is Lazarri, not Emett. See here:

That's a find!
I found your page while doing a periodic trawl for any Emett information that might be new: I've obviously missed your post and query before.
