Baltimore Comic-Con day 1 in photos

I attended the Baltimore Comic-Con on opening day, Friday, October 17th. This is a great show, and the first day is busy, but not overwhelmingly crowded. Some guests had extremely long lines (Alan Davis, Jeff Smith), but I got to chat with a lot of people, buy books, and try to convince people to donated their comic books to the Library of Congress.

  2. Hi Mike,

Thanks for all the wonderful photographs of the Con. Wish I'd been able to attend.

So many artists to talk with. I hope you got to speak with everyone.

I have a Howard Chaykin story to share with you. This took place decades ago, in the 1970s. I was visiting in the East and got a bug to visit a new, newly build from the ground up town in Maryland (I've an abiding interest in architecture.) It just happened that there was a comics con there or near-by which I decided to attend on a whim. Chaykin was a guest.
I'm sitting in the room where he was speaking. There was a line up the middle of the room, between the right and left seating sections. That line was artists wanting to show their work to HC. In the line was a fat kid who was being picked on by other artists, picked on for being fat. HC heard the snots belittling the fat kid and what he did next is fodder for a sympathetic video (the kind of short video with a title like, "And you won't believe what happened next...") Chaykin stood up and simply tore the mean kids a new asshole, berating them for being viscous, lowly and without compassion. He also took the time to call the "fat kid" up to the front and heap a cup of praise on his work.
I thought HC might be an egoist, a full of himself actor. I was wrong. He stood up for the little guy (fat pun intended) and took down the bullies in front of the Con's crowd. I am now a fan of HC and his work.
