Jim Lee auctioned himself off for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund at the Baltimore Comic-Con. According to Russ Toney, "The winning bid was $7,500.00 from a shop in Washington D.C." So who was the lucky winner? And is it a business expense?
Late-breaking comments (see below) reveal that Jim Lee was actually bought by Minnesota, a much colder place than Washington. Newsarama has a line on the story. We regret the error, although understand the story much better now, as I couldn't believe any DC store that I knew of would actually do that.
A bit off subject, but I've really soured on the CBLDF regarding all the money and time it's devoting to the Gordon Lee case. Although it has a broad scope in its mission (from what I've read on its Web page), I personally would rather the fund squirrel its money until a real First Amendment issue arise. In the meantime, I'll be giving my donations to the Hero Initiative.

ReplyDeleteRE the CBLDF, I'm afraid that I must differ with dembicki on this one. This is an egregious abuse of prosecutorial power, and I feel that as such, it is a real 1st Amendment issue. Lee's being charged over art in a comic in his store, art that has nothing to do with pornography. So I'm sticking with the CBLDF.
