Tom Toles is blogging
Matt Wuerker confirms my previous story that Tom Toles is blogging. Matt sent in a link to this excellent Robert Wright interview. You can read Tom's blog at his Washington Post page.

Tom Toles, beyond the cartoon
It looks like Tom Toles began blogging last week about the issues he did his daily cartoon on. I think this is a new development, but I usually read him in the paper edition. I'm not sure what brought it on either, although I think it's a welcome development.

MTV's Real World cartoonist met Tom Toles
There's a story on the Express website and one at the WTOP site, about Andrew, the would-be editorial cartoonist on MTV's The Real World: DC meeting Tom Toles and drawing a cartoon for the Washington Times.

Family Guy takes a shot at editorial cartooning
Here's Cavna's take on the Family Guy's shot at editorial cartooning. Personally I think this is just a generic shot, and not one at Tom Toles. I'm only putting this up for the historical record, as it were.

Don't Blame the GOP
Washington Post Saturday, July 25, 2009
It is silly to expect objectivity from any editorial cartoonist, but Tom Toles's July 21 cartoon, which blamed Republicans for the delay since 1993 in enacting health-care reform, ignored both historical and current fact.
It was a Democratic-controlled Congress that rejected the Clinton administration's "Hillarycare" health-care reform plan in 1994, before Republicans swept to a majority in both the Senate and House.
And, of course, it is impossible not to notice that Democrats once again control both houses of Congress, so if they reject the "Obamacare" version of health-care reform this year, the Republican minority once again cannot be at fault.

That Darn Toles and Doonesbury
A couple of comments referred to cartoons in "Free For All," Washington Post Saturday, May 9, 2009. Anybody need Fubar explained for them?
An Offensive 'F'
I think the word "fubar" should have been deleted from the May 3 Doonesbury comic.
The word that the "f" stands for in this acronym is considered by many to be extremely offensive.

What's With Obama's Hue?
I wonder why cartoonist Tom Toles continues to depict President Obama's skin color as white. Other cartoonists, such as Sheneman, one of whose cartoons for the Star-Ledger appeared in The Post's April 18 "Drawing Board," seem to have no trouble giving his face a somewhat darker hue.
Is Toles sending the message that Obama isn't black enough to be drawn as a black man? Toles is definitely treading "lightly."

More Toles Is the Solution
Washington Post (January 11 2009)
As with many of the world's complex problems, a solution may be so simple that it is overlooked. Take, for example, The Post's declining print circulation. The obvious solution is to simply chain Tom Toles to his desk and force him to produce not one but two editorial cartoons per day, seven days a week. Problem solved. Subscriptions will skyrocket. The Post is giving Toles way too much time off.

The Year According to Toles came out last week
Whoops. December 28th, p. B8 for anyone who kept the paper.
Since all of his Post cartoons are online, I guess it doesn't matter much.
But, hey, look - the Post is selling a print of his post-Obama election cartoon for $30; a bargain compared to the $200 for the signed one.
And although I'm poking fun at them, more power to them for figuring out more ways to make money and keep paying a cartoonist. Personally I think they should do a collection for each year of Toles' cartoons through a print-on-demand service. No upfront cost besides the intern time to put it together and I'd buy one each year.

Balancing the Cartoonist
Washington Post Saturday, December 20, 2008; A15
Dec. 13 Free for All writer Jim Welch proposed that The Post use a conservative cartoonist a couple of times a week.
No need to worry; there are already two alternatives: George F. Will and Charles Krauthammer, both of them harsh in their agenda, sufficiently extremist and frequently sketchy enough to provide more than a balance for Toles.
-- James Oglethorpe
Falls Church
·
I'd like to offer an alternative to Jim Welch's suggestion.
I have no problem with Toles's politics, although I don't share them. What I object to is that he, like Herblock before him, is seldom funny.
I'd prefer a cartoonist who shares your editorial page's political views but presents them in an amusing, sophisticated and light-handed way.
-- Myron Ebell
Cheverly
·
Pay no attention to the letter asking that you not run Tom Toles. He is the best part of the editorial page.

Balancing Toles
Washington Post December 13 2008
Here's a suggestion: Why not use a conservative cartoonist a couple of times a week, as a supplement to Tom Toles?
If that doesn't appeal to you, perhaps you could at least find some neutral cartoonist who might dilute the harsh liberalism of Mr. Toles's agenda.

Bush Forfeited Respect
Washington Post November 29 2008
Regarding the Nov. 22 Free for All letter objecting to Tom Toles's Nov. 18 cartoon:
I thought Toles's depiction of the torturer in chief departing the White House was spot on.
I have heard before the argument that the president deserves respect, but may I remind the letter writer that it's the office of the presidency as defined in our Constitution, not the individual, that deserves deference.
When an individual disgraces that office, as George W. Bush has surely done, that individual is no longer worthy of respect. He's lucky he hasn't been subjected to the Dick Cheney-Alberto Gonzales-style justice that has besmirched our nation.

Disrespect for the President
Washington Post November 21 2008
The Nov. 18 "Obama ends torture" editorial cartoon by Tom Toles was tasteless and mean-spirited and reflected an angry and biased mind-set.
One may not like President Bush or agree with his agenda, but the U.S. president deserves the respect of all Americans. That includes The Post's editors and cartoonist.
