I've seen Curato speak at this library before, and although I'm not gay or a teenager, I bought Flamers after hearing him talk.

Mike Curato and Regie Cabico for GAYSIANS

Date: Wed, 6/18/2025
Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Place:

2301 L St NW
Washington, DC 20037

About the Event

Join Loyalty Bookstores and DCPL for a conversation with writer and illustrator Mike Curato. In conversation with poet Regie Cabico, Mike will discuss his new graphic novel Gaysians, a gorgeous, heartwarming story following four gay Asians as they navigate love, identity, and friendship in Seattle during the early aughts. Mike will show slides from the book and discuss with the audience. This event is free and open to the public at the DC West End Neighborhood Library! Please RSVP to the right.

Please note Loyalty has a zero tolerance policy for harassment or intimidation of any kind during ours events.

About the Book

From the acclaimed author of the young adult graphic novel Flamer comes a heartarming story following four gay Asians navigating love, identity, and friendship—a celebration of queer chosen family.

When AJ moves to Seattle in the early aughts, he's ready to reinvent himself as a gay Asian man—but his dreams hit reality fast with no friends, no job, and an apartment so far out, "not even lesbians live there." Then a spilled drink at a bar introduces him to K, a glamorous drag queen; John, a shy gamer; and Steven, a reckless flirt. AJ's "Boy Luck Club" helps him find love, pride, and belonging—until a brutal attack tests everything they know about friendship and family.

Meticulously observed and gorgeously illustrated, Gaysians is a fierce, funny, and tender story of queer resilience and self-discovery.

"I've been hunting for books like this my whole life; this story broke my heart and healed it."—Maia Kobabe, author of Gender Queer

About the Author

Mike Curato is an author and illustrator of books for children, teens, and adults. He is best known for his Little Elliot picture book series and his young adult graphic novel, Flamer, which was released to critical acclaim and received several honors including the 2020 Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Young Adult, the 2021 Massachusetts Book Award for Young Adult, and was listed as one of NPR's Best Books of 2020. Flamer also has the distinction of being one of the most banned and challenged books in the United States, and Mike has become a fierce advocate of free speech. He continues to create books that center love, compassion, and friendship.

In 1978, he accepted the position of Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics under the condition that he would be allowed to improve things for Marvel's creators. Jim introduced royalties and a spectrum of other incentives, rights and benefits, attracting a Who's Who of talent. Later, he founded VALIANT, DEFIANT and Broadway Comics and was the principal creator of their characters and universes. Today, he's the Editor in Chief of Illustrated Media, a custom comics company.

Rick Leonardi

Josh Blaylock

Founder of the legacy indy comic book publisher and studio Devil's Due, Josh Blaylock is not only a prolific comic book writer and artist, but an expert in licensing and pop culture trends. He began publishing comics while still a teenager, rising to fame six years later with the license acquisition and resurrection of G.I. Joe, Voltron, and other classic properties in the comic space, to huge success. The first of their kind, his comics launched a nostalgia wave that is still felt to this day, and pioneered a trend of independent publishers seizing the spotlight by revitalizing major licensed brands.  Currently he is most known for his supernatural action comic Mercy Sparx, and the world of characters surrounding it (currently in development as a major motion picture), with several other creations translated into toys, film, and television.  Having published and written over 1000 comic books with over $70 Million in sales, Josh also regularly collaborates on projects in entertainment, fashion and tech, including for North Coast Music Fest, Adidas, Pixel Vault, Hannibal Buress, Diplo, 0n1 Force, A System of a Down, Louis the Child, and more. His non-fiction book, How to Self-Publish Comics: Not Just Create Them, was made required reading at Savannah College of Art Design.

Matt is not only a prolific comic book writer, he's also a highly regarded comic book artist and illustrator based in Lynchburg, Virginia. Known for his dynamic storytelling and distinctive artistic style, Slay has built a career that spans a diverse array of projects, from iconic comic book franchises to independent graphic novels.

He works as a sculptor, comic editor, and illustrator for various projects, with clients including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Lucas Films, and Cartoon Network. Michael Watkins is the CEO and Editor In Chief of Highburn Studios. Michael has worked professionally in comics and illustration for over 20 years. He's the creator of the series GUARDIANS, published by Highburn Studios, the publishing company he founded in 2000. From there, he broke into mainline comics with work on FEMME-NOIR, and proceeded to work on projects for Marvel, DC, Image, Dynamite, Dark Horse, and Upper Deck. May 31: Angela Hsieh book launch at Fantom Comics

from her newsletter.

I'm having a launch party at Fantom Comics in Washington, DC on May 31, 3pm!

We'll start with the premier of the Geozoology animated trailer (!!!). I'll be interviewed by fellow graphic novelist Brigitta Blair, followed by a short Q&A and signing.

There will be snacks (brought all the way from Taiwan)! And there will be a cake, which I will make, which I will attempt to make into the shape of a caviolith. Have I ever made a cake before? Yes. Have I ever made a custom decorative cake before? No. Will this go beautifully or disastrously? Come to the party to find out.

Joe Sutliff's Dunderman comic strip

From back in the day... the 1980s that is. A superhero parody comic strip.

Self-published, Joe gave me his last copy. I scanned it and will give the original to the Library of Congress.  But you can read it here at the Internet Archive.

Who is Dunderman?
Rocketed to earth as a baby when his planet
explodes .. . no, that's not it. Deep in a cave
beneath stately Wayne manor... nope, not
that either. Bitten by a radioactive ...?

The truth is that Dunderman represents the
classic everyman, frustrated with the injustices
of life and feeling powerless to make a change.
His excuse, he tells himself, is that he is no one
special. When chance events give him tremendous
power, however, it becomes clear that he is as
ineffectual as ever. It is the desire and ability to do
great things, coupled with total ignorance as to
how to go about it, that is the basis for Dunderman.
